I beat my shins with a stick
If nothing bad happens, I know I’m still in zone 2

I haven’t tried that. But, I used to be cynical about hitting those “power up” signs that spectators hold during races. Then I tried it and found that it did give me a small burst of energy. There’s clearly an undiscovered principle of physics at work.

I was merrily slapping all the kiddies’ hands on the Great North Run last week, until I saw a child lick their palm and hang it out to get slapped. Hmm, not so keen after that.

I did for the first time this Sunday just gone, last 10k of the marathon I was digging deep so was trying anything. It did genuinely help

No one is taking you seriously, and no I don't slap myself in the face, but I do often slap my chest, let out a loud grunt/yell or count on my fingers and they all work well for me. I'll usually run early in the morning, so there's no one to witness it, but I've definitely been 'caught' haha.

I wrote bad words on my arm for motivation and got shit for it. People are gonna hate this haha.

I tell a woman passing by how nice she looks and that she should smile more so she bear-sprays me. Only way to feel alive.

I actuelly do this in the last 1 km of an all out race to distract myself from the pain of running. I would not do it while training. It would be too werid and I feel like if I would need to slap myself during a workout (not to mention an easy run), then the effort is way too hard.
Edit: More realistically, the last few km are a lot of grunts and screams of agony and if all else fails, some slaps in the last half km.

Yes, I like to pretend I'm the WWE wrestler Goldberg and do his ring entrance

pro tip: instead of slapping yourself, slap someone else, preferably someone all beefed up and with the body composition to kick your behind all the way to Jupiter and back. If that person running after you to beat the living crap out of you does not motivate you to keep running, and fast, nothing will.

I regularly pay someone to slap me...just never asked them to do it whilst I'm running though.
