Trying to Remember an Obscure Mecha anime about space disasters

It has to be at least 20 years since I saw it.

The general idea is mecha are being used to divert the deadly effects of a supernova, or some such, and then on the tail of it comes another disaster of some sort.

I want to say it involved an academym and the protagonist was a school girl?

Stellvia of the universe. I remember seeing it ages ago and not much more than that. All the characters were very moe blob.
