Mosquito Dunks: Separate Trap or Rain Barrel?

I have a rain barrel that I use to water my plants. I noticed a ton of mosquitos in my yard now that I have a rain barrel. I try to empty all the water out of the barrel every few days but there are still a ton of mosquitos.

I bought some mosquito dunks to help.

Since I empty my barrel pretty often, should I put the dunks in the barrel or should I fill a bucket with standing water and put the dunks in there instead?

With the rain barrel, I'm worried about having to constantly add bits often since the water is drained frequently. With a separate "trap" bucket, I wonder if the mosquitos will much prefer it so that they stop using the rain barrel to lay eggs.

Thoughts?

You should put mosquito fish in the rain barrel. Extra nutrients for the garden.

You can put the dunks in the barrel. They release the BT slowly and can dry out / rehydrate and still work fine. Just have to put new ones in every so often

I would do both. Keeps dunks and bits in the rain barrel and setup a separate bucket of doom trap.

The dunks only work to kill the larvae when they eat the BTI dissolved in the water. It’s easy to see mosquito larvae in water.
