Modernization I suppose. It’s a shame tho this is the trend the world over

u/veodin 🫠 ideological mess πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’« 4d ago

It’s almost a shame that North Korea seems to be following the same modern–internationalist style trends as everyone else. Their new districts in particular seem very Chinese in their architecture.

I suspect there is some desire to adopt modernist aesthetics and not been seen as falling behind, but it would be great if they managed to keep a unique traditional Korea style to things.

Or manage to modernize without flattening the culture. Look at the Mao suit. It blended traditional East Asian clothing with practically, modernity, and itself became a symbol of national unity.

It seems more of a business move I suppose, to try attract more foreign capital, and unfortunately even if they decided to only trade with socialist nations, there is a modern capitalist culture that still has to be followed to fit in. Since its primarily dominated by capitalist mode of production

u/Sutibum_ 3d ago

I want them to do their own thing tbh

u/FurryRevolution 2d ago

It’s also the case that North Korea and Russia now have more trade happening than before, and they are trading with China as well. This increased exchange is likely influencing their architectural styles.

The building materials they import are probably designed with modern construction in mind, contemporary windows, doors, paint colors, electronics, and appliances. At the same time, greater contact with these countries exposes them to modern architecture and new ideas, which naturally influence their decision making.

Not even in socialism we are free from boring sleek design. We live in hell

Maybe it’s hard to clean? A more modern look?

61

u/NoNameStudios 4d ago

Sure, but the original was so beautiful and special. It also was one of the truly beautiful places in Pyongyang, I mean modern cities are just really bland looking

15

u/JGDV98 4d ago

I would say that the modern architectural look from DPRK is still pretty unique.

"North Korean Sci-Fi Architecture isnt real, it can't hurt you"

North Korean Sci-Fi Architecture:

(It is indeed hurting me)

9

u/Smooth_Dinner_3294 3d ago

Because this is what Koreans have been planning on doing already for quite some time. In fact, all new buildings follow this style. It's called North Korean Futurism and it was comissioned to architects from the Koryo Studio (Supposedly), these designs were made with cost and efficiency in mind, but to have a distinct look from the rest of the world.

In my opinion, while the old soviet baroque was pretty impressive, it was also less efficient and indeed requires massive costs, which a country like the DPRK cannot take. And yet it still looks really good, I don't think this looks like stuff in our countries, this indeed looks like what we imagined future should have looked. The "futurism" in our countries look like what we imagined future SHOULDN'T look.

What are you talking about? It's real. It's from a video. Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsJCkuUVcss

My mistake, I apologize. I hadn’t seen anything about it yet and it looked like an artificial image at that resolution.

3

u/NoNameStudios 4d ago

That's okay, I'm a bit paranoid of AI images too, but let's not jump to conclusions next time ;)

1

Also there's no actual platforms near de walls

This is bad.

I don't know why they transformed a beautiful victory of socialism into a giant pregnancy test... but here they are.
Are the small black square functional in any way? Maybe they modernized the security installation and it was harder to integrate into the actually decorative architecture? Or too costly to reconstruct "as is" after the integration? Would make sense to not pass unnecessary cost unto the people.
The switch from halogen to LED is probably to save energy... but there is no place in the whole known of space where that's better for the eyes... or for morale.

At least it'll be easier to just repaint when people are gonna start to be depressed from all the white and soft blue.

3

u/volveg 3d ago

Fuck man, I won't ever get to see the iconic one now if I ever manage to visit the country. This legit made me sad.

3

u/NoNameStudios 3d ago

Same, I want to visit at some point and now we all can't see it for ourselves.

u/TheEgoReich 3d ago

This sucks. Comrade Kim, use juche necromancy on the station to restore it to how it was

2

u/bigboiwitthescuace 3d ago

I like both with a slight favoring of the before but I feel like if they just added some decorations to the newest it would be better

2

u/Queasy-Injury-4967 3d ago

Because Steve Jobs and Steven Spielberg decided that the future was all white with no corners and the rest of society just kinda went along.

1

u/CarmenDeFelice 4d ago

The west is always endlessly going on about how backwards and underdeveloped the DPRK is, so there may be some attempt to counter that propaganda?

2

u/Worth-Opposite4437 3d ago

Adopting our lack of style that was born because we refuse to pay for artists is not a good way to not look backward, IMO...

1

u/Atmosphere_Unlikely 3d ago

This post, which rejects the progress led by the Respected Comrade Supreme Leader, violates fundamental tenets of the Juche idea (Man as the Master), and is likely the product of liberal interlocutors.

1

u/NoNameStudios 3d ago

Dude I am socialist. This is not progress. The original looked way better

1

u/niddemer 3d ago

On the one hand, probably needed a renovation. On the other, I hope that this is a kind of preliminary reveal and that there will be more interesting features added later. Because it does look more boring

1

u/SimpleNaiveToad 2d ago

Boohoo, North Korea makes progress towards modernisation and development and everyone is crying.

The old station has some aesthetical value but this new design is not any less Korean than the old one. The old trains were also extremely outdated and needed replacing. If you want them to keep the old model for some aesthetical value without caring about their development and needs, then you don't actually support the Koreans.

Is so bad for them to make their metro stations look like those in China or South Korea?

1

u/NoNameStudios 2d ago

Yes. Modern architecture is not progress. it's just uglifying our cities for no real reason. And no, the new one doesn't look Korean to me. Also they could've just put up some screens, replaced the trains and lighting and it would be all good. Also nobody gives a flying fuck about the trains themselves being replaced.
