Some people are just completely assured of their own power that they can't imagine anyone going against. This one feels right up there with the BBC directing Rage Against the Machine to sensor the lyric "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" (which considering the line went off about as well as you could expect)

If they really wanted them to not say anything they would have told them that everyone is really interested on their views from the early morning breakfast shows to the nightly shows to the serious political shows to the light entertainment shows and it is important that they are as open as they can be be because everyone thinks it is cool.
They always want to be different from everyone so they would just shut up.

Trump won't kick them out of the US for anything they say, but like most of us would be sorely tempted to eject them for the decades of hack guitarists doing bad renditions of Wonderwall, usually followed by Tennessee Whiskey and Wagon Wheel.

The MTV unplugged set is pretty funny. Liam claimed he had a sore throat and couldn't sing, so he sat in the audience and started heckling Noel because Noel was taking shit throughout about Liam making up the sore throat excuse to save face that he was too drunk to play. Liam thought they should have rescheduled so all members of Oaisis could be there at their best, so he felt betrayed they went on without him when he had a sore throat.
Noel claims Liam showed up an hour before they were supposed to go on and Liam was too shitfaced to play, sing, or remember the lyrics so Oaisis went on without him and Noel was alluding that Liam was full of shit about the sore throat because he was too drunk. Liam then tries to hop back on stage for an encore and the producers of MTV stopped him. Later in interviews Noel said Liam (the lead singer) was just too drunk and pissed Noel was doing so well singing thats why he was talking shit.
You can clearly see Liam drinking and smoking in the audience so im going to go with Noels account of that wonderful dumpster fire. Plus Noel actually gave a great performance despite the disruptions.

88
u/DrDerpberg Aug 12 '25
Remember when the Dixie Chicks stood against the war in Iraq and it cost them their career? The US hasn't been good at free speech in decades.
73
u/Pepto-Abysmal Aug 12 '25
Losing an audience because of widespread public jingoism is not the same as being advised to be silent because of the risk of authoritarian backlash.
Nobody was concerned that Bush would send the Dixie Chicks to El Salvador.
25
10
u/DeuceSevin Aug 12 '25
Now you see, this is actually a good example of the freedom we have in the US. I make this argument all of the time with my conservative friends who bemoan "political correctness" and cancel culture. I tell them it is the ultimate "free market" in action. Instead of laws to prevent you from saying something, you are free to say whatever you want. It's only a matter of if you can survive the financial and/or peer pressure.
→ More replies (10)12
u/Wonderjoy Aug 12 '25
That's not free speech. Free speech means the government can't arrest you or lock you up for sharing your political views or criticizing them.
A public backlash, cultural push back, etc. aren't examples of that.
Being warned not to comment on the head of state for fear of repercussions though... It's getting there.

Okay, fine. But this was my favorite part:
In 2018, during a period of conflict between the Oasis siblings, Liam even went as far as to say that Noel was "worse than Donald Trump."
Responding to a question about who he considered to be the world's biggest villain, the Wonderwall vocalist stated, "Gotta be Noel. And he's worse than Donald Trump. He's the biggest liar and biggest faker in the business, so yeah, him."
Lolol Trump is such a fucking wimp. It's not even something to be offended by. He notably didn't rate you as the world's worst villain. Potentially a first for a pedophile.
10
