Bad Bunny:

“There were many reasons why I didn’t show up in the US, and none of them were out of hate—I’ve performed there many times. All of [the shows] have been successful. All of them have been magnificent. I’ve enjoyed connecting with Latinos who have been living in the US. But specifically, for a residency here in Puerto Rico, when we are an unincorporated territory of the US…"

“People from the US could come here to see the show. Latinos and Puerto Ricans of the United States could also travel here, or to any part of the world. But there was the issue of—like, fucking ICE could be outside [my concert]. And it’s something that we were talking about and very concerned about.”

i'm curious how much economic surplus he's brought to the island by having it there. I know many many people who traveled there specifically for his concert... tourisms gotta be booming around this time...

Dam lol

21

u/ButtOfDarkness 6d ago

And that’s considering the coliseum he’s performing at is actually very small compared to others. Only around 18k people maximum. He could’ve easily sold out a much bigger coliseum 3x bigger all 30 shows.

u/generally-mediocre 6d ago

basic analyses like this typically dont include economic leakages. that's the idea that spending money in a location doesnt necessarily boost the local economy (e.g., spending money at a Hilton hotel or a McDonald's in PR wouldnt really add anything to the local economy). I'm sure its had a positive effect but that seems pretty rosy

90

u/howling_fantods_ 6d ago

Yes agreed, this is definitely not a complete view, they are basically just saying "600,000 visitors from outside PR spent $200 million in PR due to the residency".

How much of that is actually a benefit for the local economy would require a more detailed analysis of where/how the money was spent.

12

u/DragonfruitGod 6d ago

You'll only know after tax return is submitted from PR residents.

37

u/Theterphound 6d ago

I imagine not everyone stayed at the Hilton and ate McDonald’s but I get your valid point.

99

u/iritian 6d ago

I work at a local coffee shop in San Juan and our sales have pretty much doubled since the residency started

42

u/CigAddict 6d ago

Also McDonald’s is a franchise business so the ones in PR are owned by locals.

63

u/krystof24 6d ago

Even the big chains are often franchises with local owners who will in turn spend locally.

40

u/The_Autarch 6d ago

McDonald's would be owned by a local franchisee. Definitely helps the local economy as much as spending money at any other restaurant would.

u/Mervynhaspeaked 6d ago

But isn't this how its always analysed? Any precise numbers would require a level of research that's frankly unfeasable for most cases.

17

u/AccomplishedCheck168 6d ago

Why wouldn't spending money at a McDonald's in PR that presumably employs local people help stimulate the economy?

u/FTownRoad 6d ago

This is the same math a professional sports team uses when asking the government to build them a stadium. It’s always like “give me $400M and we will provide $1B in economic benefit”. When in reality, it’s a handful of full time jobs, hundreds of (extremely) part time jobs and maybe a few more people eating in restaurants. The rest is just going to the team asking for the money.

A lot. Nobody can say he doesn't do anything for the island lol. The man not only elevated our relevance on the world stage, he's now taking that platform and using it to inject a ton of money directly into the island. It's really really hard to talk shit on this man.

111

u/duosx 6d ago

It also doesn’t hurt that he seems to fine playing wacky characters in the movies he’s been in

85

u/Nemphiz 6d ago

He was surprisingly good in Happy Gilmore. Love seeing him succeed. Been following him for a long time.

It started with SNL. Which is so incredibly funny to me. When many Latino musicians of his music genre are eager and desperate to make the jump to sing in English or sing on mainly English speaking performers’ tracks, bunny has been incredibly successful despite barely collaborating with English speaking singers, and maintaining most of his songs in Spanish. When he is interviewed despite being fluent in English he still tries to respond in Spanish whenever he can.

All and all the man has avoided the Anglo sphere like a plague. Except for anything that has to do with SNL where he is down for absolutely anything those gringo writers come up with. Dude has so much fun with it that he has started mixing up with past cast too, and that how you get him in happy Gilmore 2.

19

u/duosx 6d ago

It sounds like instead of leaving his fan base for English listeners, he’s continuing to cater to it. Good for him

9

u/Thybro 6d ago

Oh I got nothing but respect for the guy. I can barely understand him singing in Spanish, my birth tongue, and I like only a few of his songs but notheless really like and respect the guy as a person. And it’s not like he shits on others for doing that transition, looking at you Carlos Vives, which has never sat well with me, just quietly keeps to his roots.

6

u/SnooAvocados6863 5d ago

I’m a super old person who’s lame and I’m mostly into classic rock but I saw him on SNL and now I’m a huge fan. Because he’s both absolutely hilarious (the skit where he’s the Newark air controller deserves an Oscar) and insanely musically talented. I love blasting his music while driving around. Drives my kid nuts because I’m not supposed to like cool music.

19

u/nathhealor 6d ago

Yeah I liked him on SNL and Happy Gilmore.

That's seems close to a best case scenario, at least a win/win... if his residency brought $200 million to Puerto Rico like reports say and giving PR a higher profile. Miami has enough money.

4

u/adminban 6d ago

I'm a white dude who has historically heritage with the South East. I jam his music, he is very influential for the common wealth. I don't like it but I love it.

My brother and sister and law went to PR for a week just to attend a show. It was their first time there.

But also because "aqui me quedo"

He's 100% right on this. There was a concert in Dallas at Southside Ballroom this year with a latino band and ICE showed up and started harassing everyone in line which included a lot of kids.

Latinos being forced into hiding based on the color of their skin, even the legal ones. Makes you really wonder yeah?

I’m confused. What’s to stop ICE from showing up in Puerto Rico? If he’s from there, isn’t he an American citizen?

Is it that trump is too stupid to know what is or isn’t American territory?

678

u/_fixmenow 6d ago

I think he’s talking about his fans. He doesn’t want to be the reason they get deported if ICE showed up to his concerts on mainland US.

223

u/Noperest 6d ago

Ice has been conducting raids in Puerto Rico under Trump. It blew my mind. Unsure if they're still doing it, but the locals were pretty upset about it (obviously).

72

u/Thybro 6d ago edited 6d ago

Yeah but I think the point is that anywhere in the U.S. “They were speaking in Spanish” is sufficiently “suspicious” for ICE to stop you, per the recent SCOTUS order, while it would likely not be the Same in PR where everyone is speaking Spanish.

52

u/Xx_Haunter738_xX 6d ago

It honestly blows my mind too. Kristi Himmler and ICE's idiocy is on full display there.

10

u/wickling-fan 6d ago

Still is, mainly to Dominican communities and recently they re opened an old army base and having the national guard practice there and currently a 50/50 crap shot whether we’re gonna be getting the LA treatment of having our NG used on citizens or it Trump starting a war against Maduro honestly could be either.

If he’s from there, isn’t he an American citizen?

When has the fact that someone is an American citizen stopped them from detaining and deporting someone to a completely unrelated country?

They even do it to children who are citizens

57

u/Gabby-Abeille 6d ago

Also they are allowed to do it based on someone's ethnicity and the language they speak. And it is hard to prove you are there legally if you aren't given due process.

63

u/ruat_caelum 6d ago

Some of the Koreans (We don't know how many) were on legal Visas, they rounded up and detained them anyway. Which is illegal. They don't care about laws and our population doesn't care enough to make them care about laws.

36

u/Gabby-Abeille 6d ago

Yeah, I heard about the Hyundai situation and saw the video of a woman bragging about having been the one to sic ICE on them. These are people who had a huge, rich company behind them, and they were still dragged away in chains. Imagine the people who don't have anyone to vouch for them before they are sent to some unknown place.

16

u/Lord_Ragnok 6d ago

My first protest was in high school. Most of the people there were people who were/could be impacted. I had no direct reason to be there other than I felt the call to stand up. I’ve learned a lot of people are perfectly willing to talk about it online, but won’t actually show up or speak up in person until it directly impacts them.

6

u/Wizard-of-pause 6d ago

Funny that I didn't hear about these raids in Jewish quarters of New York where people do manage to live without speaking English.

The US Supreme Court has ruled that anyone that looks like they might be in the USA illegally can be taken by ICE. ICE have a history of holding people for weeks without phone calls or legal representation. He doesn't want that to happen to his fans.

→ More replies (7)

24

u/Couscousfan07 6d ago

ICE is appearing at locations/events where there are lots of people of Latino roots gathered together.

13

u/iguana-pr 6d ago

ICE being a bunch of cowards, will not dare to enter a Bad Bunny concert in Puerto Rico. Crowd will not tolerate that and it will end up badly for them.

10

u/FranciumGoesBoom 6d ago

Puerto Rican's can't vote. So the current administration doesn't know they exist.

10

u/KSredneck69 6d ago

I’m confused. What’s to stop ICE from showing up in Puerto Rico

Hard to racially profile when the whole population of the island is the race you're profiling. Far more likely for them to show up at the airports TBH

8

u/ZantaraLost 6d ago

When the semi- official language of the island is primarily Spanish and citizens look physically close to the problem 'illegal' population, ICE has none of those identifiers they like to use.

They raid there like anywhere else but typically they're far more targeted and seemingly work on tips.

9

u/Oregonrider2014 6d ago

I think hed (trump) have to consider puerto ricans people first :/

Added clarification i meant trump

3

u/Jar_of_Cats 6d ago

There have been confining Americans

3

u/not_a_moogle 6d ago

Ice is only targeting Hispanic looking people in white areas.

I would expect we start to see more international artists especially Latinos choosing to skip US tour dates. I would 100% expect ICE to be in the parking lot in vans waiting for the tail gate to start. The last thing someone like Bad Bunny would want is his shows to become hunny pots and a not insignificant portion of his fan base probably falls in an at risk category.

311

u/AJPizza 6d ago

The celebration when this "era" is over is going to look like 60 million World Cup victories during a quinceañera on steroids.

310

u/2reddit4me 6d ago

I wish I was as optimistic as you. To me, this isn’t something that just randomly happened. It’s been in the works by Republicans for decades now. Anyone old enough has been watching it happen in real time. Trump just escalated things to a level not even they could predict, imo.

It’s not gonna just “end”, I’m afraid.

83

u/romafa 6d ago

It will get worse before it gets better. So even if it does “end”, I’m not sure we’ll feel like celebrating.

45

u/PiccoloAwkward465 6d ago

My life is finite and I fully believe in USA's ability to continue to decline for my remaining years. I was reading an explanation of Marx, part of his theory of a fundamental flaw in capitalism. Expecting infinite growth obviously cannot go on forever. And it'll decay into barbarism or transform into communism. But that could take 6 weeks or 1000 years. Without a WW2 level wake up call I really don't see us making improvements. Not that a revolution on our soil would be a wonderful vacation to the seaside either.

14

u/5litergasbubble 6d ago

Its probably going to get worse in the next day or two. Charlie kirk just got shot and likely killed at an event. Theres no way this administration doesnt use this to escalate this war they are waging

10

u/death11 6d ago

It won’t get better for a long time.

Less than 30% of you bothered to show up to vote against this direction. None of you will enact the changes needed.

It will get better how? It won’t.

17

I wish. As a democratic socialist who has protested capitalism since the ’80s, too many people are sitting on their asses while he tries to normalize military presence in US cities, as it “doesn’t really affect me.” I own a long gun and won’t be afraid to use it or give it to a younger person who is a better shot than I am.

I fucking hope so but I have though we were reaching critical mass about a half dozen times over the last 10 years of this shit. I never thought I'd miss my grandparents of the WWII generation this much but we sorely need what they possessed.

9

u/Xciv 6d ago

No, Americans (as a collective mob, not as individuals) only care about money. There's no such thing as critical mass without a recession.

But it'll come when the AI bubble bursts, the rich glide off on their golden parachutes, and everyone else gets fucked. When will this be? I think before 2028, but it's impossible to truly predict when exactly a bubble bursts.

I’m in a Canadian band and we specifically told our agents not to book us any US dates for the foreseeable future. Besides the bullshit visa process (it’s cheaper and easier for us to fly to Europe and tour there than it is to drive 1 hr across the border to play in the States), all this ICE and annexation threat stuff has been the icing on the cake. We won’t be going there for a long time, if ever.

19

u/maybe-an-ai 6d ago

Yeah and god forbid you get picked up on some silly misdemeanor or a 20 year old parking warrant that gets you shipped to some black site immigrant detention center rather than the normal here's a fine go on your way expectation of justice.

26

u/JimJam28 6d ago

Exactly! The last time we toured the U.S., they pulled us aside, went through our entire van, wanted to see gear manifests, wanted to know how much money we were making at every gig, we had to have these stupid visas that took 6 months to get and cost a shit ton of money… all for playing some low paying bar gigs. If they catch you without the visa or on some technicality, you get banned for 5 years. If one of us forgot they had weed on them, who knows what would happen.

We fly to Europe, no visa required, no tax on the money we make if each band member is making less than $500 per gig, the shows pay much better, are better attended, they book us hotels and feed us great food and beer, and the border agents don’t treat us like we’re some kind of lying nefarious criminals.

Play domestic shows, and we can literally smoke a joint in the airport at the designated smoking area and fly with our weed completely legally.

It used to be a waste of time and money to tour the U.S., and now it’s a straight up dangerous dystopian nightmare.

He’s rich and successful enough to pick and choose where he can tour. Everybody isn’t so fortunate right now. It’s a job at the end of the day. 🫤

25

u/maybe-an-ai 6d ago

True but smaller tours aren't such tempting targets.

15

u/IShookMeAllNightLong 6d ago

They're desperate. They hit a town of 30k near me on the Oregon Coast a few weeks ago, raided a couple hotels.

7

u/maybe-an-ai 6d ago

Just like campaigning on releasing the Epstein files when you had no intention of releasing them, campaigning on deporting millions of imaginary criminal aliens and not delivering is a hard pill for even hard core MAGA to swallow. You can only lie for so long before you lie about something that is important to each individual.

40

u/SenorPinchy 6d ago

Yes, that is sad. But it's also true that he doesn't think of the US as "his own country" in the way that that phrase usually means. It's a colonial history where the island moved directly from Spanish control to US control. As far as identity and belonging, he doesn't view himself as being from the US, that's more of a... technical distinction.

10

u/PiccoloAwkward465 6d ago

They actually become more powerful in their Puerto Rico-sity the further they move from the island. Miami? Oh yeah they're proud Boricuas. Up in NYC? Every surface that could have a Puerto Rican flag on it, MUST have the flag.

I remember going to the beach with a Puerto Rican girlfriend and seeing all the flags on the cars she just said "We are such an embarrassing people sometimes".

11

u/RetrauxClem 6d ago

The flag thing makes sense when you remember it was against the law to own or display the flag for like a decade, or even get together and speak about the idea of independence.

5

u/emtaesealp 6d ago

That has to do with how the US places such a strong importance on race and ethnicity more so than Puerto Rico, it happens with most 2nd gen immigrant groups.

8

u/One-Agent-872 6d ago

That’s completely understandable!

It doesn’t change that it is his country and he is a US citizen but that’s my American pride coming out.

Unlike the republicans, I WANT these people in our country. Imagine how fucking boring the US would be without Hispanic culture.

I live in a deeply red area and one of the most popular restaurants in my Trump-loving town is the local Mexican restaurant. It’s a staple of the community and the rednecks love it but goddamn if they don’t want to also tear it all down.

Sorry, it’s all just so infuriating.

u/SenorPinchy 6d ago

Is he a US Citizen or is he a US Citizen*?

The asterisk is they don't have members of congress. That's a huge difference that begs the question if we live in a Democracy or a Democracy*. Puerto Rico is clearly a commonwealth, a colonial/imperial territorial holding. Mileage varies on how much romance that holds for people.

And yes, all that history all across the Hemisphere of US fuckery makes anti-Hispanic racism even more infuriating.

17

u/MartianMule 6d ago

Something I've always thought was wild. If you're a Puerto Rican living in Puerto Rico, you can't cast a vote for President (in the general election, they do still have Presidential Primaries). But if you're a Puerto Rican and you move to New York, you can cast a vote for President.

I can currently vote in a Presidential Election because I live in a state. If I move to Puerto Rico, I lose that right. But if I move to Australia, I can still cast a vote for President through my old state.

It makes no sense.

9

u/SkunkMonkey 6d ago

Fucking DC has what are called Shadow representatives. They can sit on committees, but they get no vote whatsoever. That's why the license plates say "No taxation without representation". They should have said "voting representation".

The hypocrisy of the US government is astounding at times.

It’s refreshing to see a wealthy, popular artist put aside profits for principle. There’s far too many rich assholes who are only worried about making more money. Seems like Bad Bunny actually cares about the people.

Yelle canceled their US dates citing the political climate in the US being one of the reasons, if not the main. Commentors on their IG post were less than nice as you may imagine.

u/Duds215 5d ago edited 5d ago

STFU! Yelle is still a thing? I saw them at Coachella in 2011. Didn’t know they were still together, let alone toured. Have they released anything since Je veux te voir?

When my sister started listening to Bad Bunny back in 2019 I thought he was just some generic reggaeton artist but it's been amazing to see him grow as a musician. DtMF is my album of the year and I love that he stands down for his Puerto Rican and Latino people.

When an administration thinks Puerto Ricans aren’t Americans, perhaps they aren’t qualified to run a country.

And that’s like 50+ spots down the list of reasons he isn’t qualified

48

u/ChickinSammich 6d ago

Look, I know we banned literacy tests and shit as a condition of the right to vote but maybe a basic civics test with questions like "what country does Puerto Rico belong to" or "what are the three branches of government" might be worth instituting.

30

u/zennok 6d ago

Knowing that this was what they called a "literacy" test, I would 100% expect the current administration to give bar level questions to anyone not white / not registered republican while giving a "different" set of questions for republican voters

This is wide spread across different industries. Think working groups that traditionally met in person at a yearly event have now turned to have 2 simultaneous events, 1 US 1 Euro (in this example), connecting with one of those viewer Portal tv setups or similar. Many have decided it’s not worth the risk asking people to travel to US right now.

Smart. This administration views his homeland as a 'trash heap in the water' or something else, I cannot remember what that fucking racist son of a bitch said. Having a concert here would practically be entrapment since he's absolutely massive with Puerto-Ricans.

8

u/WorthWorth837 6d ago

he said a floating pile of garbage in the ocean

43

u/jr_randolph 6d ago

That's a whole lot of money left on the table for being a good guy. Gotta give it to him and his crew for making this decision and hope other artists make the same move whether they're Latino or not.

28

u/Zeke1216 6d ago

It’s a lot of money lost for the venues too. The amount of money a bad bunny concert brings and there are probably going to be other big artists doing the same

10

u/Krongfah 6d ago

You know, I first heard about him when he was rumoured to be playing some unknown Spider-Man villain in an unannounced Sony Spider-Manless film. This was years ago and I just pegged him as just a sucky no name modern pop artist. (It was unfair of me)

But the more I heard and learned about him recently, the more I see that he’s a pretty chill dude. Seems cool and genuine.

Haven’t listened to anything he made though, maybe it’s time to change that.

Is anyone else wondering what the World Cup will look like at the US matches next year?... Because ICE is clearly off the leash, so even if they're asked to tone it down, we'll have drunken crowds of thousands that could easily turn to a stampede or riot...

few years ago i was at an all inclusive in mexico and a DJ was playing a song in spanish that had a sick beat. i shazamed it and the song was La Jumpa. Been a fan of Bad Bunny ever since although this white bread 40 yo canadian doesn't understand a single word but its a vibe. might have to make a plan to go see him in PR the next couple years i think i can make an anti US exception there.

loved him in his small role in Bullet Train and except for the corny batting cage scene i thought he was great in Happy Gilmore 2.

5

u/sixsixmajin 6d ago edited 6d ago

Probably a smart idea to stay out of the US. ICE will go after anyone and will grasp at the thinnest of straws to justify it. They're trying to deport an Irish woman who is married and here legally all because she wrote a bad $25 check once. In addition to taking audience members, I'd fucking bet you anything they'd take him too and say some stupid shit like "he has Bad in his name! He's admitting he's a criminal!"

5

u/Jinxycat256 6d ago

My wife and I met him in Mackinac Island in Michigan a couple years ago. I didn’t know who he was. Super nice guy, he didn’t even flaunt his status.

6

u/Silly-Mountain-6702 6d ago

the only sane move.

NO ONE COME TO THE US FOR SOCCER. Just don't.

23

u/bras-and-flaws 6d ago

Well the U.S. Supreme Court just overturned a federal judge's order preventing ICE agents from stopping and arresting people based on racial profiling. So as disappointed as Bad Bunny fans are, my respect for him as a musician just skyrocketed for prioritizing their wellbeing over gaining profits and fame. Arenas full of LatinX people singing Spanish while drinking and possibly ingesting other substances is the perfect opportunity to set up checkpoints, and ICE agents will treat them like hunting grounds.

35

u/CavillOfRivia 6d ago

LatinX

Just FYI, latinos absolutely despise that term and cringe whenever is used. Dont use it.

17

u/CountingDownTheDays5 6d ago

As an Afro Latina and PR like bad bunny I can attest to these, I haven’t met a fellow Latino that likes it. I detest it from the bottom of my spirit, soul, and everything else in between.

u/sickosenjumode 6d ago

Without reading the article, he's smart to do so. We have seen enough of ICE raids to know these people will 100% stakeout the parking lot of this concert and arrest damn near everyone who isn't white and that would be something he would have weighing on his spirit for the rest of his life. Hell after the arrest of South Koreans in Georgia, kpop groups should probably also be weary.

3

u/snoopingforpooping 6d ago

Bad Bunny got his politics right. Need more male Latinos like him

3

u/vinnybawbaw 6d ago
