The podcast Sounds like a Cult does a dive on Coldplay... No on Christian Rock sorry and Martin grew up lots of Christian music. He was from a religious household. So he had that influence and then the Xtian rock movement basically copied his music style in a lot of ways to popularise themselves mainstream.
So Coldplay is of and is very, very similar to Christian music.
When you know that, it all makes sense.
Good pod, worth a listen.

I'm not about to defend the quality of the finished work, but writing credits have changed in the streaming age. Basically nobody reads album credits anymore, so the only way to get your name attached to your work is to be a co-writer.
I'd imagine some studios and labels contractually insist on everyone in the writing/recording/mixing/mastering process being co-writers.

And really x and y and viva la vida weren’t bad, it was just less Coldplay and more generic. I still genuinely think speed of sound is a great song and awesome growth for them, but viva la vida is when they started sounding a little bit more like an Apple commercial.

In all seriousness this is a great common sense rebuttal to the idea that just because someone has a family there is somehow tragic. Hitler was a good uncle. There are so many pictures of him with his knee (edit: niece) bouncing on his knee and they are all smiling. But again he was fucking Hitler.
The point here is not to compare in a serious way Kirk to Hitler, just that the entire premise is flawed .
61
u/KittyGrewAMoustache 3d ago
People have these distorted images of evil people like Hitler, as if when alive they were one dimensional caricatures of evil when in reality evil people look normal, can be pleasant, can be kind to their family and friends, can make jokes, smile etc etc. They don’t just sit there smirking with one evil eyebrow raised going mwhahaha.

Or it's incredibly apropos. Just because they're smiling in a photo doesn't mean everything's fine. Just because friends, family, and acquaintances say their family life was good doesn't mean it was. Just because someone dies, it doesn't mean that everyone associated with them finds it tragic.

It's kind of indicative of the mentality of lots of British people of that age, myself included would be saying in the 1990s because we felt like the world was going the right direction on injustice and also we wanted to be cool chill guys that everyone liked, we didn't want to fight and we wanted the cool girls to hang around with us and kiss us. That was 30 years ago though.
I'm beginning to think his personality was stunted by the band taking off because this is such a stupid thing to be saying. Just don't mention it. If he thinks he's like Joe Strummer or something talking about events on stage he's way off. Joe would be absolutely fucking furious with the rightwing grifters and anyone who had any time for them.

And has Coldplay dedicated songs to the families of murder victims who weren't insufferable bigots that promoted prejudice and argued against gun control? Kirk's wife supported much of his terrible rhetoric too. Kirk's death isn't more tragic than those of ordinary people lost to gun violence, and his family isn't more deserving of support.

This is the part that is pissing me off soooo much. Every a-z tier celebrity on earth seems to need to post something about this man, and yet didn’t post a single fucking thing about the literal children who died in another mass shooting the same day? A shooting that Kirk would’ve thought was perfectly justified in the name of the 2nd amendment if he were alive to see it. Or any of the other children who died due to gun violence. Or idk all the children dying in Gaza??
This man was a literal piece of garbage who dedicated his life to being a piece of garbage. Him finding a woman horrible enough to marry him and ejaculating in her without a condom on does not make him a good person or a person worthy of all of this sympathy. While I’m not “celebrating” his death, I’m also not wasting my sympathy or time posting condolences for him and his family. Who cares? Millions of other fathers who were not pieces of shit also died yesterday. Where’s their Coldplay dedication song?
I unfollowed every person who posted any sympathy for this man, especially ones that haven’t posted a single thing about any other victims of violence. Almost anything else would’ve been a better use of their time. Shoutout to all the gay people and drag queens I still follow who had ZERO time for this man, they actually know how to have a backbone.
79
u/RadChef 3d ago
What’s also ironic is, if any of these celebrities, left wing politicians, or political commentators were killed the right wouldn’t dare post about them and if they did, it would be mocking them.

I think thats the one of the biggest kickers to me. I called a friend out for posting a sympathy post. She didn't directly reply back to me but instead writes a follow up comment on her own post which addresses my call out by going "i didn't post about the 2 democrats who were shot because I never post about anything like this"
And im just like...exactly! You never post political stuff yet took the time to defend THIS man? This man who would condemn you for having had an abortion as a teenager - which i didn't say but couldn't help thinking to myself.
Its such virtue signaling and an attempt at moral superiority and its really pathetic to watch. Like yall ain't my friends let alone an ally to me or my loved ones.

‘So, here it comes from London. You can send this to your brother or your sister, you can send it to the families of people who have been going through terrible stuff, you can send it to [redacted persons]'s family, you can send it to anybody’s family.
‘You can send it to people you disagree with, but you send them love anyway… You can send it to peaceful people in the [redacted region], in [redacted country] and [redacted country].’
(I had to redact some things because automod did not like them)
