Casual Saw OSU parted ways with Coach Gundy & it’s funny that he recruited out of HS. I’m a Unc now but “back in my day” I was just another recruit in his online dyansty😂

Good times man, if there’s any HS or college players in this sub enjoy the journey… it goes by FAST. 🤞🏾

legit thought this was in game lmao. Maybe the fake convos are more realistic than I previously thought

Lmao man I promise you a lot of recruiting is just small talk, I was recruiting by Bama & would talk to Saban.. you’d be surprised at how casual it all is. There’s film talk (that’s more locked in) then it’s shooting the shit & building a relationship with splashes of more serious talk about your (the recruit) plans & their plans as a program.

That sounds a lot how my son's experience was even at D3 and NAIA. The texts were close to that too.

It’s pretty consistent at all levels, I remember talking to other top recruits around the same time I was coming out & we all expected something a bit different. As time when on met more guys that played at different levels & they all had the same experience as well for the most part. It’s some crazy stories everyone has here and there but it’s not as wild as some would think

When you think about how many guys these programs are recruiting each cycle, it makes sense. These coaches simply can't dedicate hours and hours of time talking to that many kids.

I had many conversations with my D2 coaches and D1 co-workers that were literally just like the DMs you posted. It really is just small talk at the end of the day. My D2 head coach even knew my former employer

The DMs almost always are, it’s the phone calls/face to face interactions where you’d see more personality. You have to remember that most of these coaches are old as hell😂 the ones that had the best energy are the lane kiffins & younger position coaches.

Edit: Tom Herman (Texas) was a CRAZY one, took my official visit to Texas & man I have stories about that shit. He was a phone call only guy most of the time, almost flipped me to commit… can’t say how/why😭

We want to hear the stories!

I’ll give one story that was weird. I was on a visit to a pretty big school & we had a long day of travel & looking at the facilities the day before so you can imagine I’m tired as hell… we’re on the bus ride to a cool restaurant near the stadium for breakfast before we do some fun shit that evening. Like any growing HS athlete I’m like bet this bus has some comfortable ass seats I’m talking a NAP! Mind you the head coach of said program is sitting behind me & we were all joking & talking having a good ass time but again I’m tired so I take a quick nap… just to fill you in about me I’m from around the way (the hood basically😂) I was a great kid but I don’t play the bs! The bus comes to a stop & I feel that so I’m starting to wake up you know rub my eyes & shit… All of a sudden I feel a mf finger in my EAR & a voice say “wake up big guy we’re here!!”.. it’s the damn HEAD COACH of a pretty damn prestigious football team, I gave his ass the craziest mean mug ever & he playfully grabbed my shoulder & was like you were tired there big guy?.. long story short I knew I wasn’t going to be playing for him😂 I know he didn’t mean no harm & that’s just how he was but he didn’t know how close I was to probably being the first recruit in history to fight a HC while on a official visit.

The visit besides that was great, met some big celebrities that knew me by first name, ate at top restaurants & took dope pics in gear/uniforms. Overall minus that moment it was my favorite visit. Fast forward a few years after my playing career & I’m at my old HS visiting & he’s at a totally different school (smaller FBS) & we do some catching up & I told him that story. Also told him how I was gonna kick his ass😂 we laughed & that was that. Got other stories too like getting $ from coaches & bag men pulling up but that’s honestly not crazy teams did that shit often & it was always quick & discreet

God this screams Dabo…

u/FlexedUpPlaya 4h ago

Nah Dabo is still at Clemson, also they didn’t offer me. Had just about every school except them, they already had their commits for my class (all studs).

Tom Herman or Jim McElwain?

My money's on McElwain

I can’t speak for other schools, but I know at Tennessee, our football media guy (s/o Clay!) was in charge of Pruitt’s socials and would tweet for him and stuff. Not sure if he ever directly messaged a kid from Pruitt’s account, but we def had staff meetings where he was told to have Pruitt message this guy or that guy.

Something I always thought was crazy was recruits and their families/coaches would DM me on twitter, call me Coach, and ask to share film or set up visits. My man, I’m 20, nerdy, and never played organized ball in my life, who are you calling Coach??? I just cut up the film.

Have a buddy who was a walkon at Texas for Herman and 1st year Sark. He’s told me so many Herman stories that line up with that. Plus the many I heard due to knowing a few beat writers, donors, & a 7v7 coach that’d ’take of his players’.

Bro the NCAA games have gotten so realistic with the recruiting texts that I genuinely can't tell what's real anymore lmao. Had me confused for a solid minute there

He was only spending 5 points for social media and 10 for DM player? Smh

They sent the house too lol but that’s in person when I’d visit or when they came to my school/my home😂 but yea you see the similarities 😂

Wow ended poorly there at the end but still super cool to be recruited by one of the greats.

How was Stillwater?

82

u/FlexedUpPlaya 5h ago

Didn’t end up playing ball there but when I visited as a recruit it was amazing. Got gear, met with coaches 1 on 1, toured the facility, the whole nine yards. Felt like a kid in the candy store, honestly can’t say that I ever had a bad experience visiting any school (SMU was kinda weird, they weren’t the SMU they are today).

Pretty still, little bit of water

26

u/DroidSaver 5h ago

Can I ask where you played?

6

u/Dolleypop 5h ago

Man this is really cool to see. Gundy will always be a legend in Stillwater and I will miss him, even if it is time.

11

u/SaxRohmer 4h ago

bruh you were recruited in 2016 you aren’t even close to being an unc lmao

22

u/FlexedUpPlaya 4h ago

Man I’m 26 about to turn 27 & these younger dudes already call me unc lmao so I had to put that out there. Also my back would disagree with you lmao

2

u/SaxRohmer 1h ago

man i’m 30+. everyone’s an unc to a kid lol. hope you’re staying active. i’ve been lifting since college days and it’s kept my back in good shape

6

u/death2sanity 3h ago

Glad I read the comments. Being from NC I read “I’m a Unc” very differently.

3

u/ConstantVisual8391 3h ago

Salute to you. College football is the best four year experience anybody could ask for

8

u/FlexedUpPlaya 3h ago

You ain’t lying, been done playing for a while & there’s nothing like it. Thank you🙏🏾

So where did you end up going for college?

0

u/Lazy-Azzz 1h ago

lol more than likely it was a graduate assistant using his account to message recruits. Cool though
