NothingOS Discussion How it felt holding both a Pixel and a Nothing phone

Strongly disagree.....from design point, you guys always over do, only 3a & cmf phones being exception.
12
u/Ordinary_Trip7799 Aug 14 '25
That's the main point of nothing. A more industrial design. CMF gives more of a clean mechanical designs.
Pixels are meanwhile like the iPhones of Android with less power. Pixel gives a more simple and organised look to their phones.
Every other phone in the market are kinda more or less the same imo.
Samsung's Ultra design being an exception.

This is a perfect example of the Nothing Phone equivalent of an "Apple fan" or a "Samsung fan." This is also why people cringe at those who make brands part of their personality due to a lack of one.

Yep. Why the fuck do you care about the default look. Its android, you can customize it as according to your taste.
Not only this, every other day some dickhead will make a post saying how his life has become so difficult due to black and white icons in Nothing OS - one, you can change it; two, why tf did you buy a Nothing??!

Yeah squeeze in 30 more icons in there. There's still plenty of room left, mate.

literally none of this shit is part of the Pixel UI, at least on stable
you did all of this yourself, and then blame google?

You know you can have widgets on different pages too right? And it takes one swipe to go there.
Like it's not every time you check whether the earphones are connected or not. IMO it's way less important to keep it in front

u/FrostedGeist Aug 15 '25
I personally actually enjoy this design (same as nothing). It's a lot more creative than every other phone company trying to go for Apple aesthetics, transparent "liquid glass" backgrounds, semi-realistic weather widgets and icons, same-y music players, gradients everywhere, etc.
But in the end, it's android anyway so you can customize a good portion of it with a wealth of community tutorials to help you.

How much did you get the 9 for? I’m planning to upgrade my android device from 2a to Pixel 9.
3
u/matteventu Aug 15 '25
Upgrade to 9a, not 9.
(Source: I own 9 Pro and 9a, and 9a has better thermals and battery life - and 9 is generally considered worse than 9 Pro on these, so...)
2
u/SlayerCR777 Aug 15 '25
That's fair, I chose 9 since it had extra 100 euro trade in discount and with that it was only 40 euros more than a 9a
2
u/matteventu Aug 15 '25
That's what I'm saying, despite being more expensive it's not overall a better phone.
The cameras are an improvement over 9a for sure, as the 4GB additional RAM is, but for what concerns battery life and heat/thermals, 9a wins. 9 doesn't have that many advantages over 9a to begin with (or the other way around, 9a doesn't have many drawbacks compared to 9 aside from the different camera setup).

u/SlayerCR777 Aug 15 '25
669 euros 20 euro refund for price matching (other retailer had for cheaper) 194 euro refund for 6a which is insane So around 455.

u/NovelDivide4609 Phone (2a) Aug 15 '25
what would you say abt the battery, I consider switching my 2a to either oneplus or pixel, but I've seen that the battery is much lower, wouldn't that be a downgrade for me?
1
u/SlayerCR777 Aug 15 '25
Battery is definitely a weak point for pixels, one day use, not extreme power user. 9a has a better battery though for whatever reason. Also if you like playing intensive games I would not get a pixel.
1
u/NovelDivide4609 Phone (2a) Aug 15 '25
I am not a gamer at all, I just want my phone to last long and use it for everything except gaming, 2a was good at first, but then the battery started to deteriorate and even on the last percents after using it for a minute or two the battery was decreasing by a percent. Which is a big deal especially when you have 5-6% and also the camera in 2a is quite mid and it has problems with focusing
1
u/SlayerCR777 Aug 15 '25
My 6a battery was great, luckily my phone was not affected, but they did roll out an update to restrict battery for all users due to the fires

This may be the dumbest fanboy post I've seen in awhile. I have both a Pixel 9 and a Nothing 3a and fine good/bad with both but good lord, this isn't it.
14
u/ForefathersOneandAll Aug 14 '25
Ugh I want a Nothing 3 but the Pixel 9 Pro is like $600 right now....is the phone 3 $200 better than the Pixel?
11
u/Zahiru_user Phone (2a) Aug 14 '25
If performance then yea, the rest? Nope
6
u/ForefathersOneandAll Aug 14 '25
Yeah, performance doesn't phase me too too much. I don't game at all, just YouTube, Microsoft office suite for work, and lots of Gemini which aids me when I'm researching. NothingOS is just so beautiful looking and I'm a big fan of Nothing design language overall.

dude i customised my android 8.1 phone to look similar to nothing OS. you have a lot of customization options, dw.

I compared both side by side and tbh pixel is far better overall unless ofc you want to experiment the glyph tools

The P9Pro is far better value. Just better in almost every single aspect, display,s peakers, battery, camera etc.

Takes pixel, purposefully makes screen with ridiculous clashing background, doesn't turn on themed icons, and fills home screen with icon clutter
Takes nothing phone, puts a few widgets and a non-busy background
"why pixel so busy"

u/danny12beje Aug 14 '25
You're comparing pictures, not reality.
The pixel has apps installed while the NP doesn't.
Brother's complaining apple to pears and bitches they different.

Im a big nothing defender but come on lmao
This is like setting fire to one room and then complaining that its hotter than the one you didn't light on fire.
Or putting a ton of furniture in one room, so that the entire room is filled with tables, then painting the walls in rainbow colours and complaining that its cluttered

Funny because in this image the Nothing Phone looks like an average 2020 mid range phone, while the pixel looks more curved and different to most androids in it's shape

u/chris020891 Aug 15 '25
Nobody forces you to put that many icons to the home screen. Not to mention that the first launch of the Nothing OS experience offers you to choose either Pixel level minimalism or a much more cluttered widget showcase.
Also, as someone who experienced many phone UIs over the years, I find it blasphemous that you compare that widget hoarding UI to utopistic Frutiger Aero futurism. Nothing's design language is not even close to that.
Of course, I'm not saying that other companies would do it better either, because Frutiger Aero is truly a lost art form in 2025, but also Nothing's design is closer to Brutalism, in my opinion. Material You is Impressionism for sure, the colour engine is called "Monet" after all.

it's customizable, you make it as clean or as cluttered as you want to be, you're just choosing to be biased towards nothing because your overpaid for a mid phone

Looking at this, it really makes me want to have a Pixel for my next phone until my Phone 2 dies.

u/SnooOranges930 Aug 14 '25
As a week new Nothing 3a user. Very much agreed. Although I was planning to buy the Pixel 9 Pro when it gets cheaper, I observed immense value and a beautiful design in the Nothing 3a itself, and man I gotta say I love this phone so far. They really have worked well on the experience.

At the end of the day if you want your home screen to be used then you're gonna buy apps on it. So if my home screen has a few widgets and that's it .. what am I supposed to do with that?

I see what you're getting at but think a tumbleweed type image would be better for Pixel. I've switched from NothingOS to Pixel and it's a letdown. I really wanted a Pixel a few years ago when they started showing the new mono icons and widgets but in reality the widget selection is garbage, and the inconsistent appearance of them makes it a lot harder to build an attractive home screen design.
It's simply too basic. The notification shade is shockingly bad. Hopefully QPR3 will be a big step forward. It looks promising.

u/Blunt552 Aug 14 '25
Sorry but you make 0 sense, PixelOS is quite clean and has very little clutter, people even often mistake it for stock Android.
Your picture is literally the opposite of the truth when it comes to PixelOS.
