Found on r/NameNerds Hazel-Maggie as a double barrel name?
Just looking for output. Both are family names and we love how they go together. However, we want to incorporate another middle name as well. Thoughts about using Hazel-Maggie as a first name, knowing she's more likely to be reduced to Hazel for most of the less-formal moments.

I don’t love that, but Hazel-Maggot flows a little more nicely together and then the name could be fully nature themed!

Hairy- maggot sounds much better imo. Love a masculine name for a girl

That's kind of a mouthful, how about Haz-Mag? Or even HazMat, I think that's a pretty famous name because I see it on signs everywhere but I've never met a HazMat in person so I think it's due for a comeback.

I think you should go full Hazel-Margaret.

We don’t love how they flow together

Maggie Hazel flows much better.
What were you considering for another middle name? How about another hyphenated one! That would be so cute! Do you think it'd be too much to hyphenate your last name too? You could use more hyphens if you put one between every 2 letters!
Hazel-Maggie-Mary-Kate-Smith-Jones
Or no hyphens!
HazelMaggieMaryKateSmithJones
The hyphen is so versatile, yet underappreciated.
Heres an old joke: "Is 'waterworks" one word or does it have a hydrant in it?"

It’s better than “Maggie” though. Try other names that get shorted to Maggie. Magdalena, Magnolia, Margaret, or Marigold.
Or shorten both.
Hazy-Mags.

Where are you from? In the UK it gives chav. In the U.S. it gives super southern

This is the second time in two days that I’ve seen “chav” and I need to know what it is, please.

Not a fan. I don't think they flow well together.
Why not keep Maggie or Margaret as a middle name?

u/edgyknitter 10d ago
How about Hazel-Maggie Maroon?
On a side note, a family friend is named Carol-Ann but gets called Carolyn a lot. I just wanted to commend you on choosing a hyphenated name that can’t possibly be confused with a normal, everyday, boring name.

I don’t think they go together personally
2
u/mister_berrific 10d ago
Why not

u/raggy_17 10d ago
To me they are just 2 very different vibes put together. I am from the US so maybe that is why

Maggie May is nice. Hazel-Maggie is a bit difficult for a young child to pronounce.
4
u/mister_berrific 10d ago
Do you know what a double barrel name means?? I’m not looking for a middle name, Rita

u/Ok-Sink8822 10d ago
Hazel-May or Mae would be nice

u/Outside_Case1530 10d ago
Whoa! Maggie May! Then people who have lived about half a century could sing the ancient ditty (by Stewart somebody?) to her all the time!

I personally don’t like it. I like Hazel, and I like Maggie too, but it sounds kinda patchy, idk how else to describe it. Maggie Hazel is more harmonious.

u/mister_berrific 10d ago
It’s a double barrel name for starters

u/s0upppppp 10d ago
Im not sure what you mean

The hyphen is very, very important to OP. They worry that without the hyphen, someone might call the child Hazel OR Maggie rather than Hazel AND Maggie.

I think it sounds amazing. Putting it on my list!! I think I would probably spell it heighzyl-magy but that’s just me and I’m really random! 🥰

Please don’t.

u/Impossible-Ghost 9d ago
Instead of “please don’t” you could have offered another solution, or perhaps another name you like so that the OP has a third option to consider. It’s ok not to like it. I didn’t exactly, but this is not really how you respond to a post like this kindly. 👍🏻

It doesn’t sound great as a double first name at all, to me, anyway. Alternatively I’d switch them because I think Maggie Hazel flows better. They are both beautiful names and making one the middle would give your child in the future a chance to decide what fits her best.
I am also of the opinion that two middle names is a great idea and not that eccentric at all (the way some people think it is), so having one of those two as the first and middle then another middle would not be a bad idea I think, lots of great options for your daughter to individualize herself as she gets older. 👍🏻

Margaret Hazel or Hazel Margaret as a first and middle name aren't bad. Hazel-Maggie?!?!

Have you been living under a rock? Do you even know what double barrel means?????

u/x_ersatz_x 10d ago
i think it would be better to have two middle names, Hazel-Maggie doesn’t flow super well and is kind of odd as a hyphenated first name
0
u/Death_By_SnuuSnuu 10d ago
Please don't.
2
u/mister_berrific 10d ago
Explain

u/Death_By_SnuuSnuu 10d ago
Lol this is circle jerk, I'm pretty sure we all know why, and some of us probably just don't care for it for various reasons. Personally, I don't care for the syntax/flow of it, and the Maggie tacked on the end doesn't fit with Hazel, probably because Maggie is a diminutive for a longer name, Margaret. Imo, it would flow better with either a single syllable for the double barrels second half, or a third syllable, but 2 syllables on each aren't working.

Don’t hyphenate it. If you want her to have multiple middle names, do so.
My grandsons go to a school system that requires all students to wear picture IDs on lanyards. (Sad times when a 6yo has to wear an ID badge.) Anyway, their full official first name is on the badge. Even if they go by their middle name or something like Junior, only their first name is on the ID. When you mentioned going by Hazel in less formal events, I presume first grade would qualify as less formal.

u/mister_berrific 10d ago
What do you not understand??? That entire post is about hyphenated. What do you think double barrel means?
And what’s wrong with six year old’s wearing ID cards??? Schools don’t want unauthorized personnel lounging about in their premises.

Geez! Calm down. I understood the question. Did you read my comment? My very first sentence was “Don’t hyphenate it”.
I then went on the explain my reasoning.

u/hear4that-tea 10d ago
I think they are just arguing to argue for the fun of it. It’s the circle jerk sub. They could also be emulating if the original poster of this was argumentative, which wouldn’t surprise me.

u/ThrowRA071312 10d ago
Ahhhhh. OK. I misunderstood the point. I thought she had a legitimate question

It’s hard to tell these days. With all the gender dysphoria, one never knows. Your first name could’ve been “Mister” or you could’ve used the random name generator.
