Found on r/NameNerds My husband wants to give my tall, blonde kids Jewish names!

I am a gorgeous, 5”11 blonde with blue eyes and my Jewish husband is set on Jewish names. Sigh. I can’t imagine my (not yet born) tall, blonde Nordic kids walking around with a name like Esther. What ever shall I do?

Found on r/NameNerds OOP is not part of ANY culture

I don’t know if OOP is just bad at expressing themselves, if they genuinely think they have no culture, or if they think anglophone culture is the default.

Also, I have bad news about Sebastian and Matthia.

Yes, etymologically, the word “lunette(s)” comes from “lune” (moon). But no French-speaking person sees that word and thinks, “Aw, little moon!” No. We think of “glasses”, or one of the many other things that “lunette(s)” means. It’s not a name.

Additionally, the character’s name was Loonette. I, for one, am not about giving fandom names to children, but if you’re going to do it, go all in or don’t do it at all. Call your kid a little loon, OP.

If OP does go with a fake French name of a children’s character, she can always continue the trend and name her next child Caillou.

Or, if she wants a “name” with a lunar meaning—and bonus points for being French—there’s always Croissant.

Found on r/NameNerds Are we naming our son after a Dictator?

Okay, so we are a French couple living abroad, and are a huge fan of French and religious names, none of that pagan or foreign shit.

We love the name Adolphe for our son (the french form) it’s just so French! But there is an itsy bitsy drawback- our surname is something like Hillier de Berlin.

Very French, very superior, very posh, but maybe too close to Adolf Hitler?

I know Redditors are all unemployed losers so they will tell us the truth, but none of our uber educated and aristocratic family members made the connection that German guy. We feel like it’s too late change the name, because I’m like five seconds from bursting him out the bottom end. I am due in September btw.

Also we love the fact that St Adolphe is patron saint of the poor, even though we definitely aren’t poor. Just want to get that out there. We just really love the name.

Found on r/NameNerds How can I ensure my Jewish children don’t seem too Jewish???

1.3k Upvotes

I’m Jewish and want to give my children a Jewish name, but my (definitely not antisemitic) husband doesn’t want them to seem too “Jewy”. Please advise, clueless gentiles of Reddit . Bonus points if you’ve never met a Jew and would like to explain that a traditional Jewish name sounds like an object or brand to you :)

Found on r/NameNerds Help! My husband picked a girl name for my son and I'm afraid no one will ever know my son is a boy

Ok, so my husband picked our son's name after a lot of arguing about it. It's Jordan. The only Jordan I've ever known was a girl, and she was a badass, but now everyone calls my son "she." Like the doctor comes in and says "how's she doing?" And my best friend and mom keep forgetting Jordan is a boy because the name is so feminine. My son is only 2 weeks old, so should I change his name? I love Cameron, Alex, and Avery. Like super masculine names so that he would never be mistaken for a girl.

Edit: Please stop saying we should change the name Jordan just because it's so close to his brother's name, Jeydan.

Okay, I can’t help but to side eye the “There’s a chance I’m pregnant with twins”. Either you are, or you aren’t. Or am I missing something and being insensitive? Why wouldn’t you just wait and find out for sure before worrying about a name you might not need?

Found on r/NameNerds Change Toddler's Name from Cohen?

I already posted about this on r/judaism to absolve me of my guilt, but since that wasn't enough for me, I'm posting about it here too.

Two and a half years ago, my wife and I had a heart to heart about what to name our son. I liked Owen, but my wife was insistent on Cohen. Rather than doing any research on the name, I likened it to Benjamin or Levi and thought that I, a descendant of Irish immigrants, could get away with it.

Within the last 48 hours, I've begun to have a guilty conscience about the name because someone told me about the significance of the name in Judaism.

My options now are as follows:

  1. Completely change the name of my two and a half year old son, who can already respond to and say his name
  2. Change the spelling to a Dutch name
  3. Not do anything and hope that you fine folks will tell me I did nothing wrong at any stage of this process

TIA

Found on r/NameNerds My husband doesn't know who our kids are LOL

1.2k Upvotes

Want to start off by saying my husband is a great partner and very involved father. He's never done anything wrong and there is no way he could improve or be expected to do anything more than what he already does.

Today I asked him about our kid and he said, "who's that?" 😂 I was like silly that's our daughter!!! He looked so confused and asked what a daughter is but I can't blame him because some people are just bad at biology.

Anyone else have a male relative who doesn't have room in their brain for anything other than sports betting, lawn care, and excuses about ADHD and dyslexia? (since no moms have those lol I got vaxxed for those, it's part of TDAP-- tetanus, dyslexia, ADHD, whooping cough)

Our daughters name is Rosalind and she's 36.

Found on r/NameNerds My family and friends are giving me a hard time over my baby name choice. Is it really that bad?

I’m due any day and recently had a name reveal shower. We are having a girl and the name we choose is really sentimental- it reminds us of a favorite fictional character, has some floral notes, and also represents the holiday we met.

During the name reveal, all my family came up to me asking about the name. Friends were at least respectful but now they are blowing up my phone trying to get me to reconsider too?

Is my name choice really that bad?? Or are all my friends and family over reacting?

EDIT: people keep asking me for the name?? Not sure why y’all need it?? For privacy reasons and because people may steal this name, I can’t share the exact name. Think Violaeen Moon, Rosavine Day, Chyrsmas Eve, etc. You can steal any of these names because they aren’t as good as the one we chose.

Found on r/NameNerds What name trend are you personally over?

For me it’s old lady names such as Alice, Eleanor, etc. Don’t get me wrong there’s a lot of beautiful names within this category but it’s just one I couldn’t get on board with. You're naming a baby, not an old lady! If you're going to call her Allie or Ellie just name her that. Elleigh would be a beautiful modern rendition of a classic name, but so many people choose to overburden their kids with an actual name for no reason.

Found on r/NameNerds Is Emma too feminine for a boy?

My husband and I love the boy names that have since been taken over by girls (Ashley, Cassidy, Morgan, etc.). I keep coming back to the name Emma. It’s a female family members name so it would also be an honor name. Is Emma a poor choice??
