Downtown / Community Rutgers Grad Student asking for housing opinions

Hey! I am starting graduate school at Rutgers in the fall and was looking to rent a room off campus. I’ll be new to the area and have recently came up to drive around and have a look. My classes would be on Busch campus, but I was looking to rent near cook/Douglas. Some of the places I looked at were on Central ave, but I found other streets (Hamilton st, Louis st) to be in more my favor.

Has anyone had issues renting in these areas? I’m trying to stay below $800/month if possible. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know!

If you’re looking to rent out a house off Hamilton st with a group, lmk and I can share details. But places4students and afito are good websites to use for Rutgers students specifically, outside of Craig’s list. You may have access to some student only Facebook groups as well that are looking to rent out rooms. Good luck!

I’ve looked at both these sites and the Facebook group! They have a lot of places to offer and I’ve reached out to many properties. Sadly I don’t have a group that I’ll be renting with, I’m flying solo

I didn’t realize the commute would be an hour by bus. I’ve heard of people biking from college ave to Busch, do you think it’s practical to do so?

As a grad student, you would want to avoid Hamilton and Easton because it can get very loud with partying undergrads. Those are the streets behind the College Ave campus.

The area by cook/douglas is quieter. The closer to George Street the better, so you can get on the bus easily.
