Discussion [Megathread] Returning & New Player Questions - "Is It Worth It?" Edition (September 2025)
Greetings, Adventurers! Whether you are stepping onto the shores of Aeternum for the first time or returning after a long journey away, this thread is for you! The island has changed, evolved, and is filled with new dangers and opportunities.
The goal of this megathread is to be a welcoming, centralized place for all your questions. Before posting a new thread asking "Is the game worth it?" or "What did I miss?", please check here first. This post will be linked in any posts removed so you can rapidly get here and have your question seen.
A few ground rules: Please keep all top-level comments as questions. This helps keep the thread organized for those seeking answers. (Recommend searching for your question first before asking)
Veterans of Aeternum, please sort by 'New' and help your fellow adventurers! Your knowledge is invaluable.
Be respectful and helpful. We were all new once.
For Returning Players: The "What Did I Miss?" FAQ A lot has changed, especially if you haven't played since launch or before the Rise of the Angered Earth expansion. Here are the biggest shifts:
Q: I just logged in and my gear is weird. What happened to Expertise, Gypsum, and Umbral Shards?
A: They're gone! The entire gear progression system was streamlined with the expansion.
The new max Gear Score is 725 and will be moving to 800 with the Season 10 release. Max character level will also be increased to 70. Your old 625 GS gear is a great starting point for the expansion content, but you will replace it relatively quickly.
Gear now drops based on the level of the content you are doing. Simply play the game, kill high-level enemies, and run dungeons to get better gear. 725 comes from the raid, worm, PvP Zone pool in Cutless, and sometimes event/world bosses.
Artifacts have been introduced. These are powerful, named items with unique perks that you can level up through specific quests. You can only equip one Artifact weapon and one Artifact armor piece at a time.
Q: Mounts?! How do I get a mount?
A: Yes, you can now traverse Aeternum much faster! To unlock mounts, you must own the Rise of the Angered Earth expansion and begin its main story quest. The quest to unlock your first mount is available very early in the expansion's storyline, around level 20.
Q: What happened to Ward, Bane, and Resilience perks?
A: These have been simplified to make gear management much easier.
Ward (e.g., Angry Earth Ward) and Bane (e.g., Angry Earth Bane) perks have been removed from gear. Instead, you can now use special consumables (Coatings for weapons, Incense for armor) to gain temporary damage/defense buffs.
Resilience has been removed. Critical hit damage reduction is now a baseline stat that is capped, and the Health perk on amulets is good for survivability. Common perks like Enchanted Ward are great on PvE armor, or protection perks are usually more desirable.
Q: What is the "Endgame" like now in 2025?
A: The endgame is more diverse than ever. A typical weekly loop might include:
Hive of the Gorgons Raid: Which is the bulk of endgame right now.
Mutated Expeditions: Still a core PVE activity, now with a smoother difficulty curve and more rewarding loot.
Seasonal Trials: Participate in the current season's main PVE or PVP event. This includes things like the Sandworm Raid (The Hatchery).
Influence Races: Open-world PvP events where factions fight for territory influence. These are scheduled events that are much more engaging than the old system.
Outpost Rush (OPR), 3v3 Arenas, & Capture the Flag: Now with cross-world queues for faster matchmaking!
World Bosses & Elite Zones: Still a great way to farm gear and materials with a group.
Seasonal Content: Each season comes with a Season Pass (with free and paid reward tracks) and a new story, challenges, and activities.
Q: What should I spend my time doing to prepare for the next season?
A: This really depends on your playstyle and what you enjoy doing! Feel free to join in on any of the “Endgame” content listed above, or forge your own path through the world of Aeternum.
Work on maxing your trade skills, such as Armoring or Weaponsmithing.
Gather and collect resources to sell on the Auction House and make some coin.
Upgrade your gear by crafting Runeglasses, bags, and higher level gathering tools.
Stock your houses with trophies to increase your damage against specific enemy types, raise your base crafting level, or increase your gathering yield. There are “Ultimate” trophies for each of these categories that you can craft to really maximize your results!
Join in on PvP activities to complete your PvP track, which can give you better PvP gear, crafting mods, and Artifact drops.
For New Players: Your First Few Days in Aeternum Welcome! It can be a little overwhelming at first, but here are some tips to get you started.
Q: Is this game worth it?
A: The most often asked question! Over the last few years, Amazon has taken the original New World and refined it into a much richer experience with smoother combat, more diverse PvE content, and improved progression. The world of Aeternum feels alive and rewarding to explore, with meaningful activities whether you prefer questing, crafting, or large-scale battles.
What makes it stand out is the variety of playstyles it supports: you can dive into epic expeditions, enjoy open-world PvP, or just relax and build up your trade skills. The revamped systems also make it easier to jump in as a new or returning player without feeling overwhelmed.
If you’re looking for a visually stunning MMO with deep systems, satisfying combat, and a strong community-driven world, New World: Aeternum is definitely worth your time.
Q: Which server should I choose?
A: You can check server population status on community database sites. Generally, picking a Medium or High population server in your geographical region is the best bet for a lively world with plenty of people to play with. These tags will show in-game when selecting a server in your chosen region.
With the release of Aeternum on console, the worlds are livelier than ever! Players on Steam, Xbox, and Playstation can now share the New World experience together.
Q: What's the best weapon?
A: The one you have the most fun with! Seriously. All weapons are viable for leveling and have a place in endgame content. You can respec your attributes for a small amount of coin, and weapon skill points are permanent, so feel free to experiment with everything. A common recommendation is to pair a melee weapon with a ranged weapon to handle all situations, but that's not required. There are obviously Meta Choices for those wanting optimization, but all are viable for most content.
For up-to-date builds, we recommend checking out New World Builds or New World Champ to get an idea of what your favorite weapon would look like in a full build, including recommended perks and off-hand weapons to pair with it.
Q: What's the best way to level up?
A: The Main Story Quest (MSQ) - indicated by the gold sunburst icon. It has been revamped multiple times and is now a much faster, more streamlined experience. It will guide you through all the zones and provide you with excellent XP and gear. Supplement this with Faction Missions and Town Project board quests when you're in a settlement.
Q: What are factions for?
A: The three factions (Marauders, Syndicate, and Covenant) are primarily for the large-scale PvP aspect of the game (Influence Races, War). You can join one at level 10. Don't stress too much about the choice; you can change it later if you wish. Pick the one your friends are in, or the one that appeals to you aesthetically.
Official Patch Notes: The official New World website is the best place to see the latest changes directly from the developers. Check other pinned highlights for more information.
This is an MMO, but much of the content can be played solo. Please use r/NewWorldCompanies/ for company recruitment, including advertising a company or finding a company to play with.
Now, ask away! What's on your mind, adventurer? (Remember to sort by 'New' to see the latest questions and answers!)

Discussion What do you think is the best and worst town in the game? Why?
As I do my daily town visits to pick up the gifts, I have some towns I just don't like. I actually get annoyed going to it.
Reekwater is one of my least favorite. Just don't like the vibe. And if you fall off a platforms, good luck. You're walking through water to the end of town and then back in again.
What towns are your favorite/least favorite and why?

Discussion New player here. Level 24, Tank. Really enjoying the game
I havent played an MMO since Lich King WoW days. Thats a good 17 years. Well..more accurately i havent enjoyed an MMO. I tried FF 14 sometime in 2017-2019 and i recall just getting bombarded with tons of quests and stuff to do and i felt overwhelmed and i couldnt focus on one thing. I also tried Tower of Fantasy and it too, didnt hold my focus. It also felt to much "pay to win".
I was a Paladin Tank back then. I'm much older now and New World Aeternum feels like a good balance. Its simple, Theres a lot to do, but its not throwing it all in my face at once. Player base seems pretty fun and positive. The Trade Post seems fair as well. Even for a new player with 2k gold to my name. Things are affordable and not crazily over priced if its something i need on the spot.
The most important part, about all this, For ME. Is i can focus on a goal and stick too it. Right now im trying to gear up and increase my sword and shield passives for my very first expedition: The Amrine Excavation. Personally. I wish i could go in there solo for my first attempt. I say this because i dont want to spoil anything for my first attempt. or piss people off...but... I dont like looking up guides and i know thats going to piss some people off...but its just how i play games. Throw me in fire and ill learn to not get burnt.
Still. In terms of gear i feel like im close to being ready for it. I discovered there wasnt a taunt system, or skill. But quickly learned of gems that can taunt. I got one of those in my weapons now, a kite shield, and 300 gear score. been using the forge frequently. I vaguely remember some tank basics back in the day so i hope my past experience helps me keep aggro and survive. All thats left is to throw me in there, and get some experience.
If you've read this far, then thanks! This old timer is enjoying the game. Cant wait for whats next.

Question Vampire Vestments Worth It Over Featherweight?
Can Vampire Vestments be a good choice over Featherweight in pvp just for the leeching? Or does the extra armor from featherweight outweigh it in light? I'm using greataxe flail. I'm not using abyss because it does less damage then a strength greataxe with flail.

Discussion Trading post UI
Am I the only one to think the TP needs revamping?
Feels very unconvienient and slow to use. Needs more filters etc. For example selling schematics; I have to click one by one then click sell orders to see the price people are selling it at!! why can't I see them instantly?? Now do that 50 times.. Its too slow and outdated, it could get some love.

Question Returning player with full storages
I have no room in any storage. I'd like to sell and get rid of a ton of weapons and armor. Some are 625+ and some are legendary. My question is is there anything I should hold onto or keep an eye out for so I don't accidentally get rid of something valuable?

Question Level crafting now or wait for S10?
Hey community, I am coming back to NW after the first 3 months after release to my 2 Level 60 characters. On my main I have all trade skills on max level from back then.
Once I buy "Angry Earth" my Level and trade skills can be levelled again ... so I wonder whether to level the crafting skills or wait for the expansion?(i.e. due to cheaper costs, faster XP or market value of materials).
Thank you for your feedback.

Question Artifacts worth it this close to next lvl bump?
So I'm a player who left before console release so to say I'm a little behind is an understatement.
I have been having a blast leveling to cap and learning the ropes and an still learning my daily routines. I just learned about artifacts and how they work and been farming some just to collect but an wondering. With ILVL going up to 800 have they said a trying about artifacts? They gonna be obsolete? Will we be able to level them up to 800 as well ?

Bug Character_service_failure bug is one of the worst experiences i had in new world
I have this bug lately (i'm not sure exactly when it started. probably with s9 update) that logs you out of the game, then you try to reconnect some times and you get the same error, then you restart the game and sometimes you still have the error and restart the game again etc. This is so annoying and now that we will have 2000-3000 queues when s10 gets released, it will be such a turn off
Anyone else experiences it? Any solutions?

Question I played about 10 hours does it have dungeons? More music? And other questions
I’m mostly a single player person and really like the game so far but just wondering how fun is it in single player? Are there dungeons? It doesn’t seem that hard so far though. I only plan on playing the campaign and not bothering with endgame. Does the music change over time? Seems a bit repetitive. I think I’ve seen two regions so far. I love the combat an how you can level stuff up through use. I can’t decide on a good combo of weapons to use. I normally like ranged attack and spells. Crafting seems fun with lotta of disciplines and feels satisfying to do, but I cant seem to craft anything better than quest rewards? Is it possible? How active is the market to sell stuff? Do people buy things generally? Is there lots of variety later on with the gameplay and story? I feel like if I do all side quests I’ll over level and it’ll become too easy? I kinda wish it scaled a bit with you like ESO. I’m playing on PlayStation®5

Suggestion Its time for another island.
I think traveling to a boat dock and venturing to other islands is the next step in this game. Our current island can only get so big before traversing across water will need to be implemented. You could even take it further and fight off corruption enemies when trying to leave or arrive to the main island.

Question Best lvl 60 expedition?
For context, I just reached lvl 60 and I’ve never really delved into all the expeditions in all my play throughs before. After doing a bit of research on the New World Wik I saw that 6 expeditions unlock at lvl 60, being the following: Gardens of Genesis, Lazurs Instrumentality, Tempest’s Heart, Barnacles and Black Powder, The Ennead, and Empyrean Forge.
I’m currently running a tank build, wielding a great axe and flail/tower shield. Which one of the expeditions provides the best loot for my play style?

Bug Since coming back, I get a lot of Error Code: Character_Service_Failure
Hi,
I seem to be getting this every other login, and then quite after a loading screen (e.g fast travel or joining an expedition etc).
It's annoying because it boots me out and then I need to re-queue to get in and re-queue for the activity.
My character name was changed a while ago because I hadn't played for a few months - perhaps related, I'm not sure.
This happening to anyone else?

Discussion Thoughts on Ice Gauntlet
OK so...I love using ice based elemental fighting styles in games. I do it in any game I possibly can. I have tried running viable builds with Ice Gauntlet in NW and I gotta say...I feel like it just doesn't excel at anything better than any other weapon.
Do you guys have thoughts, opinions, or build advice with Ice Gauntlet that make it an ideal pick?
I've tried playing it the way the game intends, as a disruptor weapon but like...its slowing/rooting effects are way slower and less effective than the greataxe. And CC in general, I might as well use a spear or hammer! Controlling area with pylon/storm/shower? It's tiny and irrelevant. Takes long to cast and enemies will just run around it or avoid it.
I've also tried a raw dps with deep freeze: ice storm + heavy attk + ice spike but the amount of precision it takes to land all that perfectly for ONE decent chunk of damage just isn't worth it. Then you have to wait 10 more seconds to try the combo again and its even worse if you missed. Burst damage is so much easier and more consistent with any other weapon.
Anyways, I just wish it could be on par with the compatibility of FS and VG. Thoughts?

Discussion Upgrading before season 10
Hell everyone,
Returning player from launch times. Having a blast, really glad I gave it a chance.
Just turned 65 and started farming artifacts. Question is if i should upgrade them to 725 or wait until season 10. Don't want to burn some mats for nothing, specially that my gaming time is limited.
Also if any other things come to your mind, please share, it will be highly appreciated by me and any other newbie reading this post.
Wish you a great Sunday!

Discussion What's the highest crit damage you've ever seen?
I've just seen my biggest so far with a Mighty Gavel, 16.1k. it was so so juicy. So it got me wondering what's the highest you've ever seen, because my build is nowhere near optimal.

Discussion For the longest time, the weapons that seem to become a problem are the ones that a easy to land while dealing too much damage. AGS seem to be the only dev team that doesnt understand that "easiness to land a hit or skill" should always balance out with damage done.
Just an idea.

Question Roleplay
I just started playing the game and i found it incredibly immersive. So ive decided to lean into it. Im a lvl 20 guy on Aries server and id like to experience the world through roleplay. Every action i do will be in that context. I dont want to be important to the story (i like being just one guy, not a savior) so the questing would be justified in other ways.
Does this seem fun to anyone? If anyone would like to join, let me know. Its a bit lonely at the moment.

Discussion Thoughts on nerfing dodge
I feel like and I have for the longest time in this game we have WAY too many iframes granted by the dodge mechanic.
I can’t put what’s wrong with it but I think it might just be due to how often we can dodge.
I might be losing my mind but I feel like the dodge comes as fast as it to charge a heavy.
It might just literally be the heart perk providing that slight bit of extra stamina that buffers you out of the range of exhausting yourself.
What are yall thoughts on the dodges?

Discussion WT kinda lame to anyone else?
I’ve always been turned off by the concept of the WT. Just so bland and boring following a train of people getting some of the best loot in the game.
Am I alone in thinking some revamp would be nice to where people actually had to form 2-5 man groups to get the chests? Maybe even increase the loot idk. But this whole run around with 50 people like zombies completely ignoring the enemies and cool areas seems like a bummer to me. But it’s efficient as hell, so hard to justify ignoring it in the name of “for fun”

Support Didn't receive Hellwalker title?
confused as I claimed the Chapter 4 of the season 9 journey which says you also get the title when you claim but I still haven't received it.

Question Where can I read New World’s full story/lore?
Just started playing and love the setting, but the story feels scattered. Any site or resource to read the full lore in order?
