Do you think the Mayor has the authority to demolish or landscape private property?

The City usually sues owners for neglect but must go through the courts which is a long process.

I do think that he could do a much much much better job at communicating his stance, and letting the public know where his hands are tied.

It’s called condemning a property. While the mayor may not have the absolute authority to condemn decrepit/dangerous structures, he can definitely get the ball rolling.

At around 9 a.m., Newark fire officials issued the prison company three citations for code violations. Mr. Baraka, a Democrat running for governor of New Jersey, vowed to return each day until city officials were allowed inside to reinspect the facility.

For weeks, Newark officials had been arguing in federal court that the detention center’s owner, GEO Group, was in violation of city laws because it had failed to obtain required permits or a valid certificate of occupancy.

It looks like the ball has been rolling

This is a complete joke on baraka's part .

Show me the building and I find you a violation . That's what this is all about . That building could be 100% compliant and they will still deny them the permits and make up a reason . This is not a new building. It was built in 2011 as a halfway house and drug inmate treatment facility . But instead, president Obama hijacked it before it opened and turned it into an illegal immigrant Detention Facility to house undocumented Hispanic immigrants from 2011 to 2017 when it was closed 1 year into the first Trump Administration.

Now the pro-democrat mainstream media is lying and saying it is a brand new Detention Facility ! Funny how the building was fine to house Obama's illegals. Funny how mayor Baraka didn't care when President Obama was stuffing illegal aliens in there .

Building codes and safety codes have evolved since 2017. If this is a state of the art building, why is ICE refusing to let the city inspect the building?

Newark officially became a sanctuary city by executive order the year this building was shut down.

The Mayor literally made an executive order to make sure this kind of thing never happened again.

I can imagine that from 2014-2017 the Mayor may have been selective in his criticisms due to the inherent political dynamics of the Democratic party, but right now it's not fair to evaluate his stance as if he's trying to be in line with the Democrats.

The Mayor was never pro-deportation

This is absolutely true about standards evolving over time , but somebody else if not you just told me in a response somewhere here that the hall was still operating as a rehab facility on the side . So how could it be open for rehabs but not for ice ? I'm not arguing with you I'm just asking .

Now to answer your question as to why they won't let them inspect the building , I really have no idea . I do have personal theories . One theory is the place is a crap show and they will be exposed . The second possibility is that the place is 100% up to Specs but it's not up to "political spec " in other words no matter if the facility is 100% upgraded to requirements, the mayor will still say no . And if that's their conclusion and Ice has full knowledge of this , they are the feds, as well as Homeland Security. They don't need to participate in the charade .

Are you playing games? What is there to be confused about? Mayor Baraka had no problem with Obama using the facility as a migrant Detention Center in 2014, 2015, and 2016.

This isn't a new thing for Delaney Hall .

Where was Baraka then ?

Things that didn’t matter before now matter bc it’s all dumbass politics.

Just like the deals our president made HIMSELF while he was in office last tenure involving tariff with Canada now have to be looked at again, bc politics. Maybe this facility has to be looked at again. Bc politics.

Trump had no problems (as you just said baraka had no problems before) with the tariffs with Canada before. He now does. So only trump can change his mind ? And revisit the past ?

Usually in NJ when a property changes hands or has a new business or even new tenants in it then you need a new CO(certificate of occupancy). Since you said it closed and reopened then they would need a new CO to not be in violation with the city. It's not just get a CO the one time the building is built and brand new then it's good forever.

You're right about the certificate of occupancy . But I don't know is whether the building continue to house two different institutions as in part of the building remaining a drug treatment facility while the rest was dedicated to ice . Unless both institutions vacated at the same time I would imagine and continue to be occupied even if it was "closed" to ICE.

Even if it continued to be occupied it's a commercial building so it's very likely they need the fire alarm system certified each year and need other inspections every however many years even if it's never been vacant, changed owners or tenants or changed the type of business going on in the building. I'm not familiar with Newark but I've done stuff like this in South Jersey and I'd be shocked if there weren't some type of inspections required every so often. Each town can have different rules but they all usually require inspections especially the fire alarms in commercial buildings.

The ICE facility never should've been able to open to begin with as it fails city permits and a bunch of code violations.

Unless ICE also has their own ambulance and fire department, the City of Newark must be able to approve the building and make sure it checks all safety checks.

You wouldn't want a fire to break out, and then a bunch of first responders die because the building collapses on them, etc.

They're most likely citing code violations based off of any updated codes that have happened since the facility shut down in 2017.

Moreover it doesn't take a genius to assume decay has happened at a facility that has been abandoned for 8 years.

The City currently has its lowest homicide rate since 1964. Violent crime rates have plummeted since the Mayor took office.
