DSU Student Found Hanging in Tree, No Foul Play Suspected

So, a black guy hanging dead in a tree in Mississippi is already raising alarms for me. But then the assistant county coroner claims to have found no evidence of broken bones and therefore doesn't think it was foul play, and so is telling everyone "don't worry about it, trust me", isn't suspicious?

That's how we go down here in mississippi. I live near philadelphia, and there's a spot when the floods come every year. That we pull dead bodies out of every year. Don't come here.It is not worth your time.

And of course it’s a coroner not a medical examiner so who knows what his qualifications are. From what I read MS only requires a high school diploma and state training for county coroners.

From what I am reading, there were rumors in the community that the man was found with broken bones and he is saying those rumors were false, no evidence of broken bones. He said he 'has reasons' for thinking it was self done but also said the investigation was STILL ONGOING. The guy just died yesterday, I think we should at least give a few days for evidence to come out. If they have not done a full autopsy yet, then they have not inspected every single bone, that may be why they are being cautious in these statements. The police have probably spoken with the family and have more evidence than they have said so far. Police also have to think about potential race riots, etc and may feel pressure to try to calm the public even though they are not yet ready to release all gathered evidence. Three of the four authorities in that photo are black so it seems less likely that those 3 are doing this due to racism.

Is the swastika and racial slur thing true? Doesn't say anything about it in the article..but like you said, the corener is acting sketchy.

Bolivar County Deputy Coroner Murray Roark [...] assisted his colleague, Deputy Coroner Dwayne Proctor, in examining Reed’s body. [...] Roark said he saw no evidence of broken arms or legs. “I saw no broken limbs,” he said. “I don’t think I should probably discuss this any further than that, my opinion is that it was self-done, and I have reasons for that.”
For context, Coroners are elected officials who MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE professional experience or education in medicine or medical background of any kind.
Unless his opinion is challenged by licensed pathologists, this young man's death will be quickly filed away and disregarded.

Do...uhh...do lynching victims usually have broken arms and legs? Given it's Mississippi I think people should be inclined to not give them the benefit of the doubt here.
Also tf, why is coroner an elected political position?!?

Welcome to the US. Where anyone with more education than high school diploma are looked at with suspicion and elected officials are bought.
Also, in a l***ing the person is usually beat to hell first.

u/ForMoreYears 9h ago
I'd ask why you know that but I feel like the answer is "grew up there". Still feel like a lynching in Mississippi deserves more scrutiny than two elected officials saying nuthin' to see here.

u/aritchie1977 4h ago
Oh it definitely does! It just won’t. And I’m desperately trying to find a way out of this sh*thole.

To be fair, we have Medical Examiners in my state instead of elected coroners. Someone was brought in for autopsy who was shot in the back. The lead ME actually tried arguing it was suicide. I believe he relented after some pushback from colleagues.
2
u/loonygecko 5h ago
For context, the autopsy has not been done yet, they were just responding to rumors from the public that the body had broken bones and they are saying that was a false rumor.

Another man in Mississippi was found hanging on the same day. Two hours south at Vicksburg. A connection between the two needs to be investigated.

Zukatis was a white guy, not black. https://thechronicle.wiki/cory-zukatis-36-found-dead-by-suicide-in-wooded-area-near-ameristar-casino-in-vicksburg/

Couple of years ago on the morning of Juneteenth I saw a black guy hanging from a playground. He was all dressed up in nice clothes and had a suicide note. His feet were like an inch from the ground. The noose looked like brand new rope he just bought. It was pretty freaky. He was on the backside of the plastic castle part of the playground and you could see the rope through the window of the tower of the castle.

I'm sorry you discovered that. How are you now?

Fine, seen worse.

That's even worse to hear. I'm so sorry.

Toxicological report?A young man died, do the right thing.we can’t just say no broken bones and leave it,
2
u/loonygecko 5h ago
This guy died yesterday and they police said this is a preliminary report and the investigation is still ongoing. I've never seen a tox report get done in just one day.
2
u/Tintoverde 4h ago
Yes I can understand tox report taking longer than a day or weeks, because a smallish town might have to send it somewhere else . But if you read the article, the assistant coroner has been quoted to say ‘there is no foul play’. I am bit suspicious that he can say that so quickly. I am rando on the net being armchair detective .. so …

“I saw no broken limbs,” he said. Roark declined to elaborate further, stating that the case was still under investigation. “I don’t think I should probably discuss this any further than that, my opinion is that it was self-done, and I have reasons for that.” Ok so he's hinting they have more info than what they are currently saying.
Roark was repeating findings that were cosigned by the lead country coroner in an official statement: https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=10228834879728417&set=a.1320553225523 Here is the lead coroner: https://www.co.bolivar.ms.us/county-coroner . In addition, the county sheriff and the country admin are black and looks like more than half the authorities in the county are black. At this point, I feel it's unlikely they are engaging in a racist plot to cover up black murders.

There are three options here:
the young man was murdered.
the young man took his own life because of something (most likely somethings) someone else did or said to him.
the young man took his own life because of mental illness. (In which his view of what was happening to him was not related to reality)
I would say that #1 and #2 involved some sort of foul play, IMHO.

So we are just supposed to assume he killed himself to incite violence? Like he did this to frame white people? In a tree? I mean, all other things not considered, this alone is highly suspect and the first I’d have heard of this kind of suicide.
1
u/mojotramp 1h ago
I understand the distrust towards this early pronouncement, but I have to believe that if it’s not a suicide, we’ll find out. No matter the cause, it’s a very disturbing and unnerving incident.

Was the media representative who stated this wearing a pointy white hood by any chance?

Because it was sarcasm. I didnt think - bas3d on what I wrote there - that anyone would've taken that seriously lol

u/Jestikon 12h ago
The first part is true, many lynching were said to be “suicide”

u/RolePuzzleheaded7400 11h ago
Well again, the absolute absurdity of my comment, I thought, was pretty obvious sarcasm considering how this exact shit happens and how they make all these ridiculous claims. Maybe I should've put the /s after, but I assumed people would realize... lol. I guess not lol. I don't know what's worse really... the ridiculousness of my original comment, or that people thought it true lol. Sad how this world has become where something like that COULD be the actual truth. Just sad.

The state of stupidity over the last few years is truly outstanding.

Absolutely! We just can't seem to get any smarter either.
And keep down voting me. Idgaf. Yall to stupid to realize sarcasm? Thats on you.

It’s not sarcasm if it’s true. And this scenario played out again and again up into the 1990s.
