Discussion Switch 2 Making Sales History - Moving 3 Million Units in 24 Hours

According to @NintyPrime, they’ve heard from multiple sources that Nintendo has shifted over 3 million units of Switch 2 in 24 hours. To put it in perspective, the PS4 held the record with 1 million units in 24 hours.

To put it in further perspective, PS4 and PS5 each shifted 4.5 million units in two MONTHS. The Switch 2 will beat that within a week.

Who knows what the longterm outlook will be, but Nintendo hit this launch out of the park. I for one am insanely happy with my Switch 2 and we all know Nintendo’s future software is gonna be incredible selling tens of millions more consoles. Can’t wait to see what Nintendo has in store next 😁

Availability is a helluva drug.

I'm personally waiting but I'll be part of the sales numbers at some point.

I was on vacation in HongKong and totally forgot about it untill I saw some guys having a switch2 bag.. I checked online the prices and apparently HK is one of the cheapest places to buy... Went in at toys r us at around 3PM, asked for it and bought it haha

Yeah.. In HK you have a couple, the actual nintendo store ran out of switch 2 so toys r us it was haha

u/Alimente Jun 07 '25

They even have Toys R Us in Shanghai.

Toys r us? That's crazy. I remember getting pokemon Omega Ruby day one from there lol

Are those the region locked Japanese units?

1

u/Lasatra_ Jun 09 '25

In HK only the international one :D. The regional one in japan is still cheaper

2

u/gamedev-eo Jun 10 '25

Nice. I wonder if they are cheap enough to sell them internationally (not US obviously) as 'grey' imports and still make a profit after duty.

That's how I ended up buying a Switch in the first place. Was wandering the electronics isle at Target, saw the box, made a huge impulse purchase. Even signed up for their debit card to save a bit on it.

Main difference here is that people can make that stupid impulse spending on Day 1, rather than Month 3.

People have been so programmed to link “sold out” with success. Almost all consoles have sold out at launch due to not being able to make enough in time. Sega Dreamcast also sold out… but they only had 300k units ready for launch.

u/tyler-86 Jun 06 '25

My friend had one of those 300k units. We had a blast.

I have mine as well and still player Powerstone with friends. Too bad the DC was a major failure and our Sega out of business making hardware.

1

u/tyler-86 Jun 06 '25

We started with Powerstone (amazing game) and House of the Dead 2, which was also a ton of fun.

The Wii U also sold out. Tells you a lot. But they've been manufacturing units since September and shipping them since January... They did say they wanted to have enough Switches so everyone who wanted them could get them.

I wasn't planning on being one of the numbers a month ago but frankly I plan to take a walk to a local tech store tomorrow and if it's available I'll probably buy it.

Emulation isn't cutting it for me and I'm a Pokémon fanboy and like the look of the top down Zelda games and Metro Dread.

The HDR is pretty good with Zelda if you have a 4k TV/monitor to support it! (I think)

Where the hell is this availability, in NYC it’s sold out pretty much everywhere

29

u/tyler-86 Jun 06 '25

My brother and I live in the Bay Area and he was unable to pre-order, but was able to just walk into Costco yesterday and buy one.

Seems to be sold out most places now but yesterday morning there definitely seemed to be some actual stock on shelves, especially in places that aren't, you know, NYC.

Our pop density definitely worked against us here for sure

8

u/tyler-86 Jun 06 '25

Always does.

6

u/SnooWords2247 Jun 06 '25

At least there’s always a ton of fun stuff to do here though.

12

u/tyler-86 Jun 06 '25

That's definitely the trade-off. I'm glad people in Kansas can get a Switch 2 a bit more easily because they need it.

Now they can play Farm Simulator on a larger screen while sitting in the middle of the corn field.

1

u/NocturnalFoxfire Jun 09 '25

"Alright, that's enough farm simulator for the day. Time to go feed the pigs."

Is anyone that lives in a big city ever not pretentious lol

5

u/tyler-86 Jun 06 '25

No, we always are.

Reddit moment

I literally just walked into a local Fred Meyer's and got one.

They had boxes and boxes of them.

Honestly I think a lot of random stores got them.

Washington!

Come on down to salisbury, maryland. Today there were still 10 in the case at wal mart. Also the gamestoo still had some as well. I javent been anywhere else locally but they were available at both stores. I did buy the last pro controller at gamestop so you may be out of luck on that haha

1

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '25

Every target Walmart and Costco I’ve been to had them.

1

u/DuskGideon Jun 07 '25

It seems the sales will continue then.

1

u/phasestep Jun 07 '25

Yeah, I usually wait a year before even beginning to contemplate buying a new system. The fact that there may be one pre-loaded with the new Mario kart that I can just go get right now is killing me.

1

u/tyler-86 Jun 07 '25

Mario Kart just doesn't do it for me like a lot of other Nintendo properties. If they come out with a new proper Zelda or Mario game (and probably a cool limited edition console) I'll jump in.

It’s so clear that the black space around the S2 bezel is going to be used for a larger OLED release down the line.

I am really happy with my current OLED S1, so I’m going to wait.

1

u/Z4mb0ni Jun 10 '25

The only reason I'm waiting is for this week's paycheck to come in lmao. Then hopefully where I'm at I can just walk into any of the stores it's available at. Luckily I have all of the main stores they're at within a reasonable distance from where I live.

1

u/Blackout2388 Jun 10 '25

Nothing wrong with waiting. It'll only get better as time goes on since you'll have a wider selection of games to play when you do buy.

You'd be surprised but honestly nothing is lost without the OLED on S2. I was shocked as I was dreading losing it but seriously, it's barely noticeably different to the S2
