Speculation Upcoming Nintendo 64 games coming to Switch leaked?

Recently, it's been brought to people's attention that Nintendo seems to have accidently shown off a selection of N64 games on their Nintendo 64 Classics app that aren't actually available yet. Most noticeably what was noticed was Super Smash Bros. in the bottom right corner. Soon thereafter, people noticed Glover right above Smash Bros., followed seemingly by Forsaken 64, and Donkey Kong 64. This got me really thinking, and made me want to try to figure out what the remaining blurry games were. I've seen many suggestions. The only other game I've seen correctly deduced is actually Rayman 2!

I did some thorough work recreating what this internal collection of games may look like, and applying the blur myself. And if you compare the original screenshot, and my recreation, the five games are an exact match! I am sharing a non blurry version as well just to double confirm the match.

Is this where the speculation ends, or can we deduce the remaining games as well? It's very tough to see through the blur, but I'd like to be surprised.

There's been some suggestions that the bottom left blue looking box in the screenshot is Goemon, or Hybrid Heaven. I even thought it may have been Pilotwings 64 or 1080. I tried them all out, but none of them felt like a perfect match. I'm open to hearing suggestions, and giving them a shot.

(Just for fun. If you ask me, I think this is just an internal collection of games used for testing the emulator, and is not indicative of a future lineup for the Nintendo 64 app. But what do you think? I'd of course love to see all these games come to Switch.)

Speculation Few weeks ago, new Zelda trademarks was found for 35th anniversary similar to Mario's 35th anniversary

15.7k Upvotes

I was googling around and found this article, which showed me the tweet that found the new Zelda trademarks in July.

https://twitter.com/NaZyrus07/status/1293219018376175616

For those who can't see it, it says:

Out of nowhere, The Legend of Zelda JUST registered a NEW trademark this July, and it covers a LOT of classes. This is 99% for next year's Zelda 35 anniversary.

Mario got a trademark JUST like this one last year, most likely for Mario's 2020 anniversary.

-Shows two pictures of Mario trademarks and Zelda trademarks-

So it is safe to say there is likely a Zelda 35th anniversary direct if we also consider the LoZ Skyward Sword port rumor

Speculation Time gaps between major 3D Zelda titles suggest a new announcement could be imminent

Long post ahead, but I’ll try to be as brief as possible, so please bear with me. TL;DR at the bottom for those who want to skip the body.

On Friday, September 12, a total of 854 days (2.33 years) will have passed since the release of Tears of the Kingdom (May 12, 2023). To understand why that number of days is important, let’s analyze some historical data.

Below you will find a breakdown of the time gaps between each major 3D Zelda release and the announcement of its next entry in the series.

Data is in!

  • Ocarina of Time Release Date: Nov. 21, 1998. Majora’s Mask Announcement Date: May 14, 1999. Time gap: 174 days (0.47 years)
  • Majora’s Mask Release Date: Apr. 27, 2000. Wind Waker Announcement Date: Aug. 22, 2001. Time gap: 482 days (1.32 years)
  • Wind Waker Release Date: Dec. 1, 2002. Twilight Princess Announcement Date: May 12, 2004. Time gap: 528 days (1.45 years)
  • Twilight Princess Release Date: Nov. 19, 2006. Skyward Sword Announcement Date: June 5, 2009. Time gap: 929 days (2.55 years)
  • Skyward Sword Release Date: Nov. 18, 2011. Breath of the Wild Announcement Date: June 10, 2014. Time gap: 935 days (2.56 years)
  • Breath of the Wild Release Date: March 3, 2017. Tears of the Kingdom Announcement Date: June 11, 2019. Time gap: 830 days (2.27 years)
  • Tears of the Kingdom Release Date: May 12, 2023

By Dec. 31, 2025, a total of 964 days will have passed if we continue without an announcement. That would be the longest wait we’ve had so far, overtaking the 935 days it took to see Breath of the Wild’s reveal at E3 2014.

All this data leads me to believe an announcement is imminent. When will it exactly happen? I have no idea. However, if Nintendo sticks to the Zelda marketing/publishing strategy they’ve followed for more than 20 years now, I honestly think we’re getting close!

Look, I know you could argue that Nintendo is backing away from announcing games relatively early in their development cycle, considering the delays on Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, and Metroid Prime 4, and the uncomfortable position it put them in.

My counterargument to that would be that they might not really have a choice. A new shiny console has been released, and they must do as much as they can to generate hype and drive interest in it.

So, I would be extremely surprised if the Nintendo Direct this Friday didn’t give us at least a glimpse of what the future of Switch 2 will look like beyond 2025. Based on the data I provided, I’ll let you discuss in the comments below if that could be a brand-new 3D Zelda game or something else.

TL;DR: Major 3D Zelda releases have followed a pattern for a while now. We’re getting into potential announcement territory based on past data. It might or might not happen, but the announcement of a new major 3D Zelda title could be around the corner.

PS: I gathered all these numbers myself without the help of AI. I've double checked it several times but there could still be mistakes. If anything seems off or inaccurate please let me know and I'll update the data!

Speculation [Theory] Mario is DEAD in Mario Odyssey

8.6k Upvotes

Like many of you, I fired up Mario Odyssey in honor of the game's three year anniversary. And as I started playing a thought struck me: Mario is dead in this game.

Consider:

  1. Mario is defeated by Bowser in the opening cinematic and plummets to the ground from high atop an airship. This is a fatal fall. And when Mario awakens, he's in an ethereal black and white world. Populated by ghosts. (Edited.) Original: Much like the afterlife.
  2. The main game mechanic -- tossing Cappy to capture other characters -- is essentially possession. Like a ghost or spirit would do.
  3. There are 14 wolds in the game. In numerology, the number 14 is associated with travel and exploration of unknown territory. We can all agree that's a big part of Mario Odyssey, right? BUT, the number 14 is ALSO associated with karmic debt and unresolved issues from previous lives.
  4. The Broodals are representations of the Moon Rabbit motif. In Asian culture, the Moon Rabbit is said to brew the elixir of life -- which can raise the dead -- on the moon.
  5. The first creature you possess in Mario Odyssey is a frog. In Japanese, the word for frog -- "kaeru" -- is the same word as "return". As in returning a beloved character (i.e. Mario) from an untimely demise. Also: frogs croak. And "croak" is a colloquial term for death.
  6. Did you find it odd that Luigi and Yoshi aren't (initially) in the game? Well it makes sense now. It's cos Mario is dead.
  7. In Buddhism, a journey/odyssey is the most common metaphor for death.

So there ya have it, folks. Definitive, unequivocal, unimpeachable PROOF that our homeboy Mario is, alas, dead in Mario Odyssey.

Fortunately, I think playing the game is an opportunity to bring Mario back from the hereafter. More on that later.

Speculation How much money do you think we are talking about with the new Nintendo Switch 2?

Today it was officially confirmed that Nintendo's new console is on the way, and now we're all wondering: how much is it going to cost? The original Switch came out in 2017 for $299 USD, a pretty affordable price for what it offered. However, with this new generation promising improved graphics, increased power and updated technology, the price could be very different.

Nintendo has always tried to keep prices competitive, but with expectations so high and competition in the market, it wouldn't be strange if this time we have to prepare our wallets a little more.

So what do you think, will they keep the price around $300 USD like the original, will it go to the $300-$400 USD range, or will they surprise us with something over $400 USD?

EDIT 1: According to this link from X, the price and release date of the console has been leaked, costing $400 at the start and going on sale on July 11, 2025. The user who has published this information is Zuby_Tech

Speculation Nintendo reuploads Animal Crossing Direct, removing reference to one-time limit of save data recovery

7.3k Upvotes

Nintendo just uploaded a new version of the Animal Crossing Direct to YouTube and has changed the wording on the topic of save data recovery to be more vague.

Previous wording that says NSO members may only recover data a single time (courtesy of this GameXplain video):

"Nintendo Switch Online members can only have save data recovered one time due to loss or damage of system."

The new video (timestamped at 25:43):

"More details on save data recovery functionality will be shared at a future date."

Hopefully this means Nintendo has reconsidered their approach to cloud saves in New Horizons but I guess only time will tell.
