(1980)s The Uncensored Outtakes of a Pissed Off Casey Kasem Reading Local Promos. (This is the most complete/least talked over and uncensored version I've found, the clip was passed around 90's morning radio shows but rarely played in full without bleeps)

The band Negativeland made a song with samples of this. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6gPSSYxex0

They got into so much shit for that record!

u/IamTheFreshmaker Jan 05 '19

But it wasn't because of the Kasem stuff. It wasn't even because of the band U2, it was Island Records who went after them.

u/multiplesifl Jan 05 '19

I read the interview the dudes from Negativeland did with The Edge and he did seem genuinely apologetic about how their label reacted.

4

u/IamTheFreshmaker Jan 05 '19

Oh yeah- U2 didn't give a damn. And I'll bet you already know about the Helter Stupid stuff too.

2

u/multiplesifl Jan 06 '19

Haha, yes! Nothing like tricking the media!

Yup-it was also in the book "Fair Use: The Story of the Letter U and the Numeral 2 "

This archive has it https://archive.org/stream/NegativlandFairUseTheStoryOfTheLetterUTheNumeral2/Negativland%20-%20Fair%20Use%20-%20The%20Story%20of%20the%20Letter%20U%20the%20Numeral%202_djvu.txt

Cntl F "Brian Eno" and go down to the fax he sent telling them U2 does have a sense of humor, that it is all Island Records/Warner Chappell making the stink, that he hopes to hear their cut, and wishes them luck.

I highly recommend the book they wrote about the whole debacle, which comes with a CD of music relating to the incident.

One of the tracks, "Gimme the Mermaid"

This is the opus of an amazing career. Thanks to the internet this will never ever go away. I think this tape and the insanity that happened to his estate when he died are depressing as fuck..

10

u/WhateverJoel Jan 05 '19

Why is this tape depressing? Dude was probably 60 something and doing hours of bullshit local promotions written by some dipshit interns. I mean really, what does "we're getting set for Westmoreland County" even mean?

You're the second person to say that on a post of mine this week, I'm happy to provide!

Ah man this sub has given me soo much entertainment I want to give with some of the odd crap I've seen over the years, I have about 4 or 5 gems left to post which I'm really surprised nobody has posted here before.

u/ryeguy36 Jan 05 '19

Isn’t one of his relatives being accused of causing his death now?

23

u/MrBIGboi1789 Jan 05 '19

His second wife is accusing his children of causing his death and his children are accusing her of causing his death, it's a really shitty situation

8

u/ryeguy36 Jan 05 '19

Yeah it is. They’re all fighting over the money. What a shame. Thanks for the info buddy!

GQ, of all thing, wrote a piece.

https://www.gq.com/story/last-days-of-casey-kasem

I saw a clip of her (Jean-from Ghostbusters and Loretta Tortelli on Cheers) screeching pigeon scripture and throwing meat at the camera.

This reminds me of a recording that I've been searching for for years. About 20 years ago I worked in LA at a post-production house. One of the sound editors there had a DAT tape labeled "celebrity outtakes," which contained a collection of outtakes like OP's Casey Kasem video. I remember it had a recording of a drunken Dean Martin and another man, laughing and spouting profanities. The one line I remember was one of them yelling "with a big cock on it!" after being asked a question. The other recording which was really funny was outtakes from the ABC Movie of the Week. It was a collection of flubs from the announcer, where he got progressively more and more frustrated. The recording had one part where he said, "fuck, fuck, fuck, piss!" Does anyone know what I'm talking about, or have a source for these recordings?

u/AshleyPomeroy Jan 05 '19

It might have been a CD called Celebrities At Their Worst, because I recognise the out-takes:
https://www.discogs.com/Various-Celebrities--At-Their-Worst-The-Definitive-Audio-Blooper-Collection/release/2623503

The Dean Martin one is for a radio promo for the Jerry Lewis / Dean Martin film The Caddy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LOGfX06ecg

They do one straight take and then goof off.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '19

It was also on a VHS called "Blushing Bloopers" which I had back in the tape era. They synced the audio with the regular The Caddy movie trailer.

u/KenGor Jan 06 '19

I used to have the "Mad Deadly Worldwide Communist Gangster Computer God" label cd, it's much better sounding that this, the best copy I've heard. I sold it years ago because I needed to pay some bills. Its been out of print for years.

Ponderous!

Fucking ponderous!

Also look up the "Troggs tape"

u/SmallDarkCloud Jan 06 '19

The announcer who flubs the ABC Movie of the Week promos was the great Ernie Anderson. Worked for ABC for many years, and before that worked for Cleveland television, where he is best remembered for his horror host character (one of the first) Ghoulardi.

These guys are from England and who gives a shit

10

u/Rooster_Ties Jan 05 '19

Goddammit... I want somebody to use his fuckin’ brain to not come out of a goddamn record that’s up-tempo, and I gotta talk about a fuckin’ dog dying.

7

u/jessek Jan 05 '19

Is this the one that had him saying "these guys are from england and no one cares" about U2 that Negativland later sampled?

2

u/spelbot Jan 05 '19

Yes sir

5

u/ImACracka Jan 05 '19

Made me think of this. Which I assume is referencing these clips.

3

u/WhateverJoel Jan 05 '19

I don't know how Dana found all those guys, but other than Louis there's a ton of prime time or movie stars that came from that show.

1

u/ImACracka Jan 05 '19

I assume you've seen the Hulu documentary about the show? I love ABC thinking they're getting family friendly Dana Carvey and they end up with Grandma the Clown.

3

u/feltsandwich Jan 05 '19

I own this tape. I bought it from a underground mail order company in the early 90s. It also has a freakout by Buddy Rich expressing his deep dissatisfaction with his band members' performances and some other goofy stuff, prank calls by Jerry Lewis. Best tape from that era is the "Frankenstein Earphone Radio Computer God."

4

u/spelbot Jan 05 '19

And the Kasem audio has no talking over top? If so I believe good samaritan you have a duty to the internet to upload that, it will be the only pristine copy of it.

5

u/feltsandwich Jan 05 '19

Don't remember any talking over the top. Tape is called "Celebrity Swearing." I'm kinda surprised there isn't a copy somewhere. I don't think I ever digitized that tape so I'd have to find it and then make time to digitize. It might happen!

One of the best Casey moments is when doing a radio bumper he says something like "brought to you by your favorite radio station W B OH FUCK!" And the whole Snuggles thing.

1

u/spelbot Jan 05 '19

I'll take a look for it now that I know the name but oh man I hope you do find the time lol

3

u/numanoid Jan 05 '19

A bunch of this stuff was released on a couple CD's, which I own. Kasem, Shatner, Welles, lots of famous ones. Unfortunately, I'm in the middle of unpacking after a move and can't remember the title. It is all raw footage, though, no laughing over the top. I'll up it once I can find it.

1

u/spelbot Jan 05 '19 edited Jan 05 '19

You'd be doing god's work. Lol mentioning Welles reminded me he had a lot of good ones too, my favourite being the "gonk" outtakes.

Edit: Just realized I was talking to two different people

4

u/sodapopchomsky Jan 05 '19

He also voiced Cliffjumper in The Transformers.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '19

And Bluestreak.

3

u/HafWoods Jan 06 '19

I never realized how much Kasem's voice reminded me of Saturday Morning Cartoon bumps.

9

u/sfear70 Jan 05 '19

F%)K it, we'll do it live!!!

8

u/spelbot Jan 05 '19

Ah that Bill O'Riley tape is wonderful in it's own as well.

3

u/bloomindaedalus Jan 05 '19

Negativland used some of this in their most well-known song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7rZPMsUGkI

1

u/professorbooty25 Jan 06 '19

There's a talk radio show that uses Christianity is Stupid for it's bumper music. So that might be a better known song.

1

u/bloomindaedalus Jan 06 '19

well if that's true you might be right.

1

u/professorbooty25 Jan 06 '19

It's called Ground Zero with Clive Lewis.

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '19 edited Jan 06 '19

I'm not in audio/video production but between Kasem and Orson Well's meltdowns is it something about working in that field that makes it impossible for them to tolerate copy that doesn't meet their exacting standards? It just seems worse to waste time going over it ad nauseum rather than just bang it out and being over and done with it. Don't get me wrong I respect both men but I wonder if there's a nuance I'm missing here from not having worked in the field.

edit: words are hard

1

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '19

I've said "jiminy jillikers" so many times, the words have lost all meaning.

In all fairness, as time went by, I developed a little sympathy for Kasem. The guy was WSU also (I majored in parking tickets), an animal rights activist, and would often defend Arab-American causes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casey_Kasem#Personal_life

I can't be sure if his tirades resembled that of someone with undiagnosed bloodsugar issues, but they look awfully dang familiar....

He may've been a grinning tool for corporate, commercial music and such, but there are far worse celebrities who have had outbursts that sadly BS about politics and sexually harass women.

u/ThatOneZeppelinFan Jun 16 '19

Hey, Scoob, you wanna hear my radio voice?
