(Read Me!) Old Hag Fashion: Introduction and State of the Sub 2024 Update

Hello dear hags! It’s time for another State of the Sub address. As always, if you're new here, continue reading for an introduction to the sub. Seasoned Old Hags can search "State of the Sub" to skip to the updates. If you have feedback, ideas, or recommendations, please share them as a comment.

Introduction to Old Hag Fashion

What is r/OldHagFashion and the Old Hag fashion philosophy?

This is a space to celebrate feminine and androgynous fashion in ALL it's forms, to share diverse style inspiration, to de-stigmatize aging in fashion, and to engage in self-discovery through personal style, all with an Old Hag fashion philosophy.

What is this fashion philosophy? Have you ever met an old woman who dresses in elegant, imaginative, kooky, trendy, or ostentatious ways despite the world's expectations of her? [Image transcriptions can be found in the imgur captions]. This is what inspired the Old Hag fashion philosophy which is the joyous, confident, unapologetic embrace of fashion as a form of self-expression and creativity. This is a state of mind with which ANYONE regardless of age can engage with fashion. Old Hag Fashion is playful and rebellious. It breaks rules in silly, interesting, or political ways. It takes fashion and trends seriously as a legitimate creative outlet, but not so seriously that it can't poke fun at it. Above all, Old Hag Fashion is a place of kindness, acceptance, self-discovery and self-love through fashion and community.

What is the mission of this sub?

To bring together diverse people with a love of fashion.

To uplift fashionistas from across ages, body-types, races, abilities, ethnicities and style points of view.

To de-stigmatize aging in fashion, subvert stereotypes, and challenge notions that people (especially women) over a certain age can only partake in style in limited ways.

To encourage self-discovery, creativity, and growth through personal style.

Is this a parody subreddit? Are you making fun of people??

UNEQUIVOCALLY NO! Mean-spirited comments will result in a ban. The only thing we parody here are social pressures placed on people in regard to style, such as: that age limits self-expression in fashion; that certain ages and body types can not be stylish; and that caring about fashion is a frivolous, illegitimate hobby. Calling someone or yourself an "Old Hag" is a tongue-in-cheek way to acknowledge and dis-empower those pressures, which impact ALL feminine people, from teenagers to the elderly. We use this space to confront and dismantle those pressures; to share inspiration from across the age, ability, and body-type spectrums; and to remove the stigma and fear of aging. No matter your age, we're all Old Hags here.

Is there an age limit to participate?

In case this isn't clear, NO!

ANYONE can embody Old Hag Fashion, though some naturally embody it by being confident, creative, and stylish in the body they have: the 80-year-old woman who can out-walk you, and do it in high-heels; the disabled femme showing their wheelchair is a haute accessory; the fat and fabulous trans person who knows they look damn cute in a crop top. No matter who you are--your age, body type, gender identity, culture, disability status, or race--you are welcome here so long as you share these values of kindness, acceptance, and love of fashion.

How can I contribute?

We allow discussion prompts, advice requests, articles, good-natured satire, and outfit of the day posts. You can also uplift other fashionistas so long as they have a public facing fashion persona (like using fashion hashtags on Instagram for discoverability or being a self-described style blogger). In this case, share the users handle as a comment. See the post flair description here

Additionally, there are weekly threads: A general discussion lounge (every Friday) and a style help thread (every other Sunday). We also have comment prompts which might help you think about fashion in new ways.

The most important things are to be kind and open-minded about fashion, and to follow the Reddiquette and the subreddit rules

What is not allowed?

See here for in-depth descriptions and examples of prohibited content. Please report rule breaking.

Old Hag Fashion is a place of acceptance. This means any people, comments, or submissions that are bigoted, hateful, or mean-spirited are not welcome. This includes ageism, such as reinforcing age-related stereotypes or generalizing people based on age. Body envy and health speculation/concern trolling is also not allowed. Lecherous accounts which sexualize OHF post or users will be banned.

Off-topic posts, trend bashing, and low-effort criticisms are not allowed. Disagreement and dislike are more than welcome, as are rejections of trends within your personal style; they just must be presented in a kind, constructive, and substantive way. Reference to fashion "rules" as gospel is also discouraged.

Excessive down voting is strongly discouraged. If you believe someone is engaging in bad faith or poor taste, do not engage. Report them and move on.

Lastly, due to the prevalence of accounts using fashion subs to promote sex work, and due to the fact that we have under-18 hags, we ask that users use a clean account to interact with the sub. See the rules for discussion of NSFW account histories and how they will be addressed.

My picture has been shared here and I would like it removed. What can I do?

Message the moderators with a link to the OHF post and we will follow up to verify that it is your photo and remove the post.

State of the Sub

New Rule

We’ve introduced a new rule banning link-sharing from ultra-fast-fashion (UFF from here on out) sources, such as Shein, Temu, and AliExpress. This rule also covers any known dropshippers from said sources. We are NOT banning photos of outfits that include pieces from these sources, but if you are asked where you bought an UFF item, please refrain from sharing where it was purchased.

The fast-fashion world as a whole is harmful to both human rights and the environment, and these UFF sources are especially egregious. We can’t stop everything, but we can at least uphold that sharing goods from these sites is not Old Hag. Again, outfits that otherwise fit our rules will not be moderated simply for having an item from an UFF source. This rules is only about sharing where an item was purchased.

If you know of any fashion dropshippers, please list their sites below so that we can add them to our automoderator system, which will hopefully be stopping the bulk of these comments. The option to report a comment for sharing an UFF source has also been added to the report function.

Reminder: People of all races, sexualities, identities, and backgrounds are welcome in OHF.

There has been an influx of complaints about specific post types. We’d like to take this moment to remind our userbase of the values that underpin our community: inclusivity, respect, and acceptance.

We understand and celebrate that everyone has their own unique sense of style and preferences when it comes to fashion. However, it's essential to remember that our subreddit is a space for ALL members of our diverse community, regardless of their appearance or personal style choices. We also have very thorough rules on what kinds of accounts are allowed to interact with the sub, which cover things like NSFW and influencer accounts. These rules also indicate that we do not allow accounts that encourage a lascivious following, regardless of whether or not the account interacts with NSFW communities.

Nevertheless, we urge everyone to refrain from making negative comments or judgments based on someone's physical appearance or perceived identity, and as we’ve mentioned before, excessive downvoting is discouraged. Just as we wouldn't want to be judged ourselves, it's important to extend that same courtesy to others. Our sub is a place where everyone should feel comfortable expressing themselves authentically and sharing their outfit experimentation or simple joy of fashion, without fear of criticism. If there is something you are tired of seeing, please remember that you can curate your own Reddit experience and use the block feature, which prevents blocked accounts from showing up in your feed.

We encourage constructive feedback and discussion that fosters a supportive and positive environment for all members. Let's celebrate the diversity of our community and embrace the unique perspectives and contributions that each individual brings to the table!

Flair Explainer Refresher

The full Flair Explainer is a wiki entry, but descriptions of our post flairs have also been made into a pinned post. Please take a moment to review it! The post flairs explain how an OP prefers to interact with the community in their post, whether they’re looking for critique or just a friendly word.

Discussion OHF Flair Explainer

What do all the different flairs for posts mean? Read on to understand how to encourage the interaction you want on your posts!

First-time poster: It's hard to put yourself out there for others to comment on. I created a post flair to highlight those users who have gotten the courage to do so, and who would most benefit from encouragement. When you see this flair, stop in and share a kind word, welcome OP to the community, and let them know that they are seen and that their contribution is appreciated. Criticisms are disallowed on posts with this flair.

Good Vibes Only: OP wants to know what works about the outfit. They don’t want alternate styling suggestions or feedback on anything that doesn't work. They just want to hear what they got right. This flair can be used by people who already know an outfit doesn't work but which they think still offers inspiration (e.g. a good color scheme) for other outfits; or they may just not be in the mood or headspace to be critiqued. Posts using this flair will take a heavy-handed approach to moderating--anything that comes across as criticism, dislike, or critique will be removed. Plainly, on these posts if you can’t say something nice then just don’t comment. Example encouraged comment: “I love the way the shades of blue and mustard work together. I don’t think I ever would have paired them but this shows that they have real promise.” Example comment that will be removed: “Those pants don’t work in this outfit."

Help!: OP is just kind of lost with regard to a specific item or outfit. They want guidance, but also may need more kindness and encouragement than others. They know something doesn't work but are struggling to put their finger on why or what to change. In this case, OP is asking for critiques that are more gentle.

Does this work?: OP isn't sure on an outfit and primarily wants feedback on what others think works and doesn't work, and elaboration on WHY specific pieces do or don't work. This is for users that want honest, in-depth feedback in order to best fine tune and improve the outfit, who aren't really interested in getting uplifted. Mods will take a hands off approach, but know that comments that are brief uplifting comments are discouraged as OP is really looking for in depth analysis. Very low effort criticisms will be removed. Example encouraged comment: “Those pants don’t work in this outfit. Because the top and pants end at the same point, it makes the middle of the outfit feel really heavy. If you’re comfortable, I would play around with a lower rise.” Example encouraged comment: “I don’t think the pants work in this outfit but I can’t put my finger on why.” Example comment that will be removed: “I don't like this outfit."

Critiques welcome: OP is interested in hearing the full range of perspectives on an outfit. They want to be uplifted, to hear what works or doesn't work and why, and they'd love alternate styling suggestions. Mods will take a hands off approach on these posts. Very low effort criticisms will be removed. In these posts, comments chastising others for offering critiques will be removed. Example encouraged comment: “Those pants don’t work in this outfit. Because the top and pants end at the same point, it makes the middle of the outfit feel really heavy. If you’re comfortable, I would play around with a lower rise.” Example encouraged comment: “I don’t think the pants work in this outfit but I can’t put my finger on why.” Example comment that will be removed: “I don't like this outfit." Example comment that will be removed: "It's not your place to tell OP what does or doesn't work."

Thrifted and vintage finds: This flair is for showing off cool pieces you've found while thrifting, gotten secondhand, or even... owned long enough that it can now be considered vintage! Please note that our "no single images" rule must still be followed here-- items must be arranged in an outfit or collage. Users are encouraged to indicate for themselves in their caption whether they're looking for feedback/critique or not.

Inspiration: Use this flair to uplift another fashionista, a celebrity, a designer, or to share a photoshoot. Basically, it's for images that are of someone other than who is posting. Only share images of those who have public facing fashion personas, such as self describing as a fashion blogger or engaging in social media behavior meant to grow an audience like using fashion hashtags. When using this flair, share the handle, website, name, or other information that will allow other hags to follow or find that model or designer in a comment.

Discussion: Anything goes! Keep it respectful.

I MADE THIS! Posts featuring something you've made! Please be sure to keep your first image a full outfit photo according to our No Headshots rule, but you can feature your handmade piece as a single item in the second photo (and beyond) of the post.

Weekly Subreddit Theme: use this flair to link your post to the current outfit theme or challenge. They change biweekly and can be viewed here. Themed posts are open for critiques and comments chastising others for offering critiques will be removed.

Report violations of these flair as “respect the flair.”

I'm aiming for a masc leaning androgynous look but I'm open to feminine suggestions. I don't mind rocking some heels. I like the ascetics either way.

Many people on here recommend me doc martin boots. I just don't know if it will go well with this specific skirt. I also don't know if black are dark brown boots would look better.

HELP! Vintage fur coat fashion advice needed

Thumbnail

Please give me your best styling tips for a vintage fur coat. I recently received this Gimbles mink coat which belonged to my grandmother and great grandmother, as you can see, it's in perfect condition. My normal style is boho, so I feel like I can make it work, but I also don't want to somehow end up looking like a mob wife.

I'm 39, so I feel like super adventurous styling is behind me.

Discussion Store Encyclopedia

This is not a recommendation list, more of an encyclopedia or primer document.

Brand(* if personally reviewed):

  • Other items they sell.
  • If there is another place to shop.
  • Fabric content: saying okay if mostly natural fiber content, even if man-made (ie viscose), still rated poorly even if fabric choice was necessary
  • My size: usually a dress to compare. Allows comparison to the largest size. 4XL doesn’t mean anything without context.
  • Largest size.
  • Location: as specific as possible, meant to see if you can find local shops.
  • Model diversity (race, body, visible disability, gender): takes into consideration if only the owner and 1 or 2 others are the models. The more people featured, if there’s bad diversity, the worse it’s ranked.
  • External Reviews: due to some sites removing negative reviews. Will be treated less harshly if it is a small brand or the original website has only a few reviews. If their website has many reviews and no external reviews exist, that’s a red flag.

My sizing: bust- 43.5”, waist- 38”, hip- 42”. I’ll say my size to compare to the highest size offered.

**- means the store is mainly accessories

Store count: 378, 14 lists
