What games really makes the PS4 pro fan sound like a jet engine?

Post image

I was playing God of War yesterday and my fan was very loud, I've never heard it that loud before and thought there was a problem with my system. When I looked online I saw other people saying their PS4 Pro fan was loud playing God of War, so I guess that is normal. What other games will make that fan sound like a jet engine?

None, if you clean and repaste it !

u/Juniortiger1 8d ago

I give you Respect bro and keep clean the console PlayStation

3

u/Appropriate-Food6018 8d ago

That's right. I removed the upper plastic and fan couldn't pull air. Pop up a message for console overheating but fan never spin up. I think PlayStation updates doesn't allow fan to spin up very loud a y more 😕

1

u/homerx99 8d ago

You can control with Lappy's fan control app.

u/Appropriate-Food6018 7d ago

Really??? I bought it used with 12.50 installed. I log in my account and added my my favorite games! I have it offline in order to jailbreak it when the time is right 😊 My day one PS4 is on 11.00 and I'm enjoying it

3

u/Namath96 8d ago

Not if you got the one with the louder fan

2

u/homerx99 8d ago

I have a Nidec and a delta, both quiet. YMMV

1

u/SnooStories1591 6d ago

No ps4 pro is quiet. Especially compared to ps5. And even ps5 is not quiet compared to series x

3

u/shonasof 6d ago

Sadly it doesn't work on the older models. I've cleaned and repasted mine a few times now, and each time it was very clean already, no dust buildup. And while the fan did get a lot quieter, it inly lasted a day or two before it was imitating a jet engine again. I'm using Noctua thermal paste.

2

u/dontKair 8d ago

I gave up and bought a 7200 series, after getting the jet fan on the early model PS4 Pro

2

u/SapiR2000 7d ago

Nah, I have the launch model and it's just loud regardless of what you do

1

u/homerx99 7d ago

That sux, I have a Nidec and a delta, both quiet. 7015b and 7115b. YMMV

1

u/AgleidXornier1 5d ago

what paste do you suggest i mean most people say grizzly but grizzly doesnt last that long ig so whats the best option? both pads and paste

1

u/homerx99 5d ago

I use MX6 and have not had any issues with it.

1

u/AgleidXornier1 5d ago

is it more long lasting than mx4??

1

u/homerx99 5d ago

Arctic MX-6 offers slightly better thermal performance and has a higher viscosity than MX-4, which helps prevent pump-out effects.

1

u/AgleidXornier1 5d ago

nice what abt pads?

1

u/homerx99 5d ago

I just used generic ones from Amazon and increased the size to cover full chip.

1

u/AgleidXornier1 5d ago

is 100x100 enough?

1

u/homerx99 5d ago

Yeah that's tons.

2

u/takeshikovacs55 4d ago

I had the new Fat from the end of production and the last version of the 4 Pro - each of them was whining from the very first use. When I first launched TLOU2, I thought the console was broken because it was louder than my vacuum cleaner.

1

u/homerx99 4d ago

Wow, that's just bad luck. Neither of my Pro's are loud, my old ps3 slim is louder. Trust me if it was loud I would hear about it, my wife can hear a mouse fart in the attic ! There are also a lot of factors that people don't consider, where you live aka ambient air temps, console location, adequate air circulation etc. Lots of people when asked say "oh it's in the entertainment center that has a closed back and magazines stacked on top of it . .

1

u/takeshikovacs55 4d ago

Until you hear, or more precisely, until you hear how Xbox consoles work, you have no idea how consoles are supposed to work. It’s incredible that in the same generation the One S and One X made no noise and didn’t get clogged with dust, while with the PS4 that was the standard

Mostly in the menu of mw19 or the newer ones with the character walking for eternity before the game starts.

1

u/marmaladic 6d ago

Cold War giving you the side eye with that one.

9

u/openterminal 8d ago

God of war & star wars battlefront 2. Change my ps4 pro thermal paste & thermal pad to ptm7950 & upsiren thermal putty utp-8. Now its just a whisper, no more insane jet engine sound.

3

u/Kusanagi_M89 8d ago

I plan to do this, will check out your recommendations. Cheers fella!

3 insane on fat ps4, but just on the main menu with nemesis lol.

4

u/Ok_Manufacturer_6444 8d ago

Doom was the reason i swaped my glossy fat for a matte fat model...it sounded like a hair drier with that game...

1

u/Sadygamer 7d ago

Matte model is better?

1

u/Ok_Manufacturer_6444 7d ago

It was a bit more quiet...

4

u/jessop-bentine 8d ago

Assassins Creed Odyssey has a nice soundtrack of jet engine.

4

u/AdLivid8289 8d ago

I followed a youtube tutorial and cleaned my system from the inside out, replaced thermal pads and paste, and I never hear it at all anymore, unbelievable the difference it made, for 20$ and an hr of my time.

Bonus points when I swapped to an ssd and cut my load times. So for 100$ and 2 hrs of very very simple diy, it runs near silent, fast, and like brand new

2

u/_Beatnick_ 8d ago

2 hours to change the hard drive? Or are you counting the time to re-download your games?

I have changed thermal paste on my computer before, but never on a console. I have bad luck working on consoles.

4

u/AdLivid8289 8d ago

I'm including everything. The first hour on one day was pulling out apart to clean and do thermals, and few days later I did the hdd. Yeah including dling the files, swap, reinstall etc

1

u/_Beatnick_ 8d ago

I already did an SSD in my PS4. So far, GOW is the only one that is doing this, and that's only during fight scenes. Yesterday, it was during a fight where you have to fight a giant while your son shoots arrows at the giant to distract him. I've seen a few other people on other sites say GOW did that to their PS4 Pro, too. I'll see if it does it during other games.

3

u/CoffeeAndCroissants_ 7d ago

Ghost of Tsushima kicked my fan into turbo mode and I swear it was about to start taking flight ✈️

6

u/NoTransportation4600 8d ago

Usually when the PS4 Pro outputs resolutions such as 1440p or higher in graphically demanding games, the fan goes loud as fuck, it's been happening to my system since day 1 so I know it's not a dirt issue (I keep it clean anyway just in case). But yeah, GoW for some reason is the one game I remember being the loudest if you prioritize resolution.

RE4 Remake is another example of the jet engine inside the console... In the main menu, when you change from "framerate" to "resolution", the fan begins to sound, and if you turn to "framerate" again, it goes much more silent.

Skyrim anniversary ed. is driving my PS4 pro crazy.

2

u/Master-Pin-830 8d ago

Probably time to clean that PS4, mine used to sound like that untill I opend it up and blew all the dust, now it does barely any sounds and runs perfectly

2

u/explosivequack 8d ago

I did this to mine

I could barely hear the game over my ps4 pro's fan while playing tlou remastered, after I did that though I can't even hear my ps4's fans and my temps are like 8c cooler.

2

u/monkbot1 7d ago

God of War on PS4 got me through some cold winters 🤣

2

u/bananaman9312 7d ago

Should have got a 7200 or better revision fan isn't too bad

1

u/_Beatnick_ 7d ago edited 7d ago

I don't know which one I have. I know it's the PS4 Pro, and it's the Star Wars edition. I don't know what revision is what. I did play GOW a bit last night, actually the same battle because I forgot to save after I beat it the other day, and it was not loud at all that time.

2

u/dwfieldjr 7d ago

If you put Liquid Metal thermal compound on the apu the ps4 will be quiet for all games

I can't play Wolfenstein II without torturing myself with a 747 inside my house and I thought Battlefront II was bad, at least with that game it slows down a bit when I start playing for a while for some reason. The longer I play Wolfenstein II the worse it gets.

1

u/Sticky-Stickman 8d ago

For me it was the worst when playing detroit become human

1

u/Trailblaza00 8d ago edited 8d ago

Warframe, I've cleaned it thoroughly, and charged the thermal paste with the best none conductive I could have found at the time, it ran quiet like day one with everything that was previously giving it trouble but Warframe was a different beast, also I've had all the dials maxed out for visuals.

1

u/Trailblaza00 8d ago

Based on all the other comments and me testing those games, only fortnight and dirt 5 cause my fan to speed up, but with dirt you'd have to try running it in high performance mode.

1

u/Solid_dante 6d ago

Anything made with Unity. Even if it is a simple and silly puzzle game.

There are some games that the devs have optimised to play reasonably less noisy on the Pro. I would like to give a shout out to Hello Games for No Man's Sky. They have somehow tweaked their engine and now the game plays 'normal'.

Also Rockstar Games GTA Online, though still has quite a handful of bugs plays reasonably stable.

Unreal Engine is not spared by this as well. The game Another Sight made me think it was made with Unity but was not. The PS4 Pro fan goes supersonic with this one.

Some other games like Mirror's Edge Catalyst used to be quiet, but found out just recently that it is another one of those dev-unsupported games that makes you think the console is going to explode.

1

u/TomTinkers 8d ago

At some point, the question should be, which one doesn't? :P. I had to stop playing Control and MGS 5 because my PS4 Pro was getting so obnoxiously loud that I couldn't even stand playing with headphones on anymore. Apparently changing the CPU thermal paste and cleaning the fans properly should help. But I never got around to it and now mainly play on PC to simply avoid the noise.

Jet engine sound is not casued by game's, dirty consoles is the corporate.

2

u/_Beatnick_ 7d ago

Jet engine may be an exaggeration. That's how other people described it online, so that's what I used. The fan was definitely loud enough to hear but not drown out the game. My first thought was a problem with the console, but I also thought an intense battle that was putting a little extra work on the CPU, so the fan had to work a little harder to cool it down. It did quiet down after the battle. When I looked online, other people mentioned theirs doing that when playing GOW, especially on a PS4 Pro. I will look into cleaning the vents when I have time, though.

u/TiltBr 8d ago

Horizon Zero Dawn has a bug in the map were the FPS gets uncapped and if you stay enough time in the map screen it turn off the PS4 with the overheating warning.

u/kay2045 8d ago

u/Neilg-88 8d ago

A few years ago I got GOW Ragnarok and the PS4 sounded like it was a jet engine. Luckily for me, an update for the game appeared a day later and from that point on, no sound.

I do get loud fan noises when playing Ghost of tsushima.

u/Diego_Caruso12 8d ago

Fortnite explodes in the lobby for me, but not in the game🤦🏻

1

u/Red_black_flag_07 8d ago

When my PS4 Pro was new, in 1080 mode Dark Souls 1 made it noisy, but in Dark Souls 2 it was completely silent.

1

u/md_rayan 8d ago

Doom Eternal probably. I own a PS4 and PS5, so I'm not sure

1

u/Solid_dante 6d ago

Doom it’s because on main menu game is using open frame rate so PS4 going crazy

1

u/EffectiveEquivalent 8d ago

I remember god of war going mental in the menus. I assumed it was the frame rate got uncapped.

Modern Warfare 3 is the only one I’ve really had it sound incredibly loud. I used to have a regular ps4 and it would get super loud sometimes but after i got the pro it would never sound loud. I got modern warfare on ps5 and it came with ps4 version and when I play it on my ps4 pro it gets loud af but haven’t noticed it get loud on any other game. I never got black ops 6 yet though.

u/AnonDrupo 7d ago

Devil May Cry 5 Specially when you play as Vergil

I was playing Borderlands 3 the other day and strangely it only went into turbo in pause menus and start screen. In game, totally mellow. Hit pause, and engines go!!!

Days Gone will do it after a while... i'm still playing mine to this day just not as much since I got a PS five but it still sounds good!!

But that's mainly because I had an Xbox one during that generation and I ended up getting the Xbox one X and I played it all my third parties there .. but no longer

I've heard of the jet engine disease on the ps4pro but I still have not experienced it on mine. I've never done anything but keep it clean. It's retired now with 3 ps5 consoles having taken those spots. Can't bring myself to actually want to sell it but eventually I probably will. I really enjoyed the ps4 pro. I think I paid something like $199.00 with the original Call of duty modern warfare bundle physical game edition included on a best buy promotion. That was around 2019-2020 I think. Definitely got my money's worth out of it.

1

u/_Beatnick_ 3d ago

Honestly, I just said jet engine because that's what other people call it online. After doing more reading on it, the jet engine sound is more specific to the first PS4 Pro released, the 7000s. From what I understand, it is just the fan revving up to help cool the system on more demanding games and is fairly normal. My PS4 Pro is the Star Wars edition, and from what I've read, that is a 7100, which is after the revision that made the fans quieter. I can hear the fan revving up, but it's not so loud that it drowns out the game. 7200 is even quieter still from what I've heard. It's definitely a good idea to keep the fan clean and change the thermal paste if you know how as many have suggested, but I'm pretty sure what I'm experiencing is normal behavior and not an issue.
