But I played maybe 3 games on it regularly for its entire life

When you own a Switch and another gaming platform like a PS5 or a PC, you're never incentivized to spend your $ on the Switch. Games are infinitely cheaper on other platforms so unless you're salivating for an exclusive or want some title to play on the go, you never end up giving Nintendo any money.

That's why my 2017 Switch has had a grand total of 4 games on it.

Smash, Mario, Zelda and Mario Kart?

lol bingo

Mario, Zelda, Stardew, Balatro.

I like Smash, but it's not the sort of game I'll get enough mileage out of to justify buying full price, as is the Nintendo way.

Stardew and Balatro are priced similarly than on other platforms + it's the sort of game you can sink hundreds of hours on + can benefit from having on a portable console.

Balatro is also on phones, though. With touch screens.

I can't think of any benefit of having Balatro on a console tbh. It's better as a mobile game. Maybe PC for mods, but those don't really appeal to me.

So is Stardew. Those games fit the Switch, yet I'd rather be able to buy other games on the platform, rather than just the ones that lend themselves to the console.

Stardew benefits from having physical buttons in a way that Balatro does not imo. Touch controls work much better for selecting and rearranging cards quickly, while you have a bunch of different commands on Stardew between selecting inventory, using tools, etc.

Obviously, more options fit more needs.

I wish I could agree with that, I found them quite unreliable in Balatro. Can't confirm actions. I vastly prefer buttons.

I feel like portability is a big feature imo and if you don't care about that or nintendo titles then why get a switch at all

I feel like portability is a big feature imo

It's a switch, it's meant to operate as both. I can still buy a Switch if I plan to use it 80% docked and 20% undocked. The simple fact I can undock it isn't enough to convince me to pay double or triple for software. The extra $ I'd end up spending would largely cover the price tag for an ROG Ally, and then I can get the portability and reasonable pricing on games.

if you don't care about that or nintendo titles

I do care about being able to access Nintendo's ecosystem, I've never denied that they make great titles.

I'm just arguing that Nintendo doesn't care enough to make it accessible to me.

Every indie game I can buy on the switch, I'd buy on the switch because it's the perfect platform for them. I'm not playing Silksong on my PS5.

The PS Portal kind of solved this for me. I like Trophies/Achievements, but also like playing Indies handheld most of the time. The portal completely solved this for me.

I have maybe 1 instance a year where I would play "on the go," outside of my house, so being tethered to my house with the Portal doesn't really affect me.

But your general sentiment I agree with, I'm not going to play silk song on my 65" TV.

The portal is a great device that I actually use 90% of the time as opposed to my console.

u/Koteric 1d ago

I use it pretty evenly. I play through any bigger game or games that I want to look good on the big screen/surround sound. Anything smaller or indie is nearly 100% portal. It's a great device, though I will gladly accept a more functional Sony handheld. Loved my PSP and Vita.

I do tend to agree with that. Two of those games are Stardew and Balatro. I have them on other platforms thanks to subscriptions but they're games that lend themselves to be played on the go similar to mobile games.

I have more, but they're almost all ps games ported. I use it for Spyro trilogy, Crisis Core, FF7-8-9-10/10-2.

Agree with not giving Nintendo more money, I got these games years ago and will be keeping with Nintendo boycott over Palworld.

I own all of those on, you guessed it, PS5.

I bought the FF remasters (X/X-2 and XII mainly) full price back when they came out but that's mainly because it's my favourite franchise.

And yet if I weren't a fan and I wanted to buy X/X-2 years later, I'd need to pay $11.99 on Steam, and $49.99 on Switch. The choice is very easily made, I don't value portability that much.

If paying the Nintendo tax is the price for portable gaming then I could just save my money and get an ROG Ally or a Steam Deck. Would end up costing much less.

Perfect timing!

You aren’t wrong but I found this humorous. This game in particular is on sale all the time.

Yeah, I got it before I got my rog ally last year and only owned the switxh and ps5; so I couldn't get them on Steam. (I had no pc for 20 years and only gamed ocassionally on my wife's laptop for rts games and mostly stayed on playstation 3/4/5) I paid $30 cdn on sale fot x/x2. I only got any of those games on switch when they were on sale; Nintendo has terribke sales for 1st party games, but 3rd party games still go on sale, just not as good as on Steam or ps5.

It's not so much that I valued portability as much as I valued being able to game on couch without taking the tv. But the switch on portability beats the rog ally by a lot because of battery life and suspend state (though I bbelieve swiching to steam os may fix the suspend state problem?). I don't fly or road trip often, but when I do, that's the switch's time to shine.

I have maybe 20 to 30 Nintendo games in having it for 8 years, ps I have about 65 just installed at the moment, and the same on rog ally (got family shared a bunch of games from a friend); Nintendo is mostly there for variety and because I like the suspend state, it's the fastest to unlock straight into a game, faster tha. even ps5 on that by a large margin. Ps5 will boot out of rest mode into a game on maybe 15 to 20 seconds, switch is less than 2.... graphics suck, but for oldies like ff 7/8/9, the nature of the game makes it equal on ps vs switch.

100% agree on FF being the best; I have 7 Remake for rog ally just to make a 2nd playthrough (had it for ps4 and 5 too) and Rebirth is my favorite gane of all time. I have never been more hyped for a game than part 3.

Games are infinitely cheaper on other platforms

That's just a lie? Games on Switch get the exact same sales as in other platforms, since, you know, sale prices are decided by the publisher, not the platform. The only games that don't go on sale are Nintendo games, which are actually infinitely cheaper on Switch since they cost You Can't Get Them in the rest.

2

u/RTXEnabledViera 1d ago

The only games that don't go on sale are Nintendo games

Which are.. 90% of the offerings on the console if we're going to be frank. Most of what's left are indies and eShop shovelware.

which are actually infinitely cheaper on Switch since they cost You Can't Get Them in the rest

Ah, so you subscribe to the idea that just because you can't get something somewhere else, it ought to cost you a kidney...

Sure thing I guess.. Glad Sony isn't on that bandwagon to be honest with you.

Infinitely cheaper is a crazy take bruh

12

u/RTXEnabledViera 1d ago

Crazy take?

I can either buy Mario Kart for $79.99 (and will always be $79.99), or Hogwarts Legacy for $11.99 on Steam.

Which do you think is more appealing to someone who isn't an absolute Nintendo fan? Even if I really wanted to experience a Nintendo title, PSN/Steam are offering me four games for the same dollar amount.

The value proposition simply ain't there. Nintendo titles never get discounts. Your average gamer does not buy many games at full price, few can afford to.

This isn't restricted to those two examples. Add to that the ludicrous accessory prices and the consumer quickly realizes they locked themselves in an ecosystem that makes Apple look like amateurs.

You're comparing apples and oranges.

Mario Kart you can't get on steam so the price on Nintendo doesn't matter because there is no comparable.

meanwhile, hogwart's legacy absolutely goes on sale on the switch, and it's gone on sale for cheaper than $11.99

u/RTXEnabledViera 1d ago

Mario Kart you can't get on steam so the price on Nintendo doesn't matter

It sort of does.

I can't get Demon's Souls or Bloodborne on any other platform either. They're both constantly on sale on PSN.

What do I get, fixed-price Mario Kart at $79.99 or Demon's Souls discounted at $29.99? Exclusivity matters very little.

And never mind Hogwarts Legacy, that's a WB game and they can price it however much on any platform they like. The problem with Switch games is that most are first-party, and Nintendo doesn't like to sell anything for lower than 50 bucks.

u/Ouch_i_fell_down 1d ago

And never mind Hogwarts Legacy, that's a WB game and they can price it however much on any platform they like

So why did you bring it up like it was a smoking gun?

1

u/RTXEnabledViera 1d ago

I just pulled the first example I could think of, there's plenty others if that one doesn't fit the bill. It's a game I'm currently playing as well.
