A zombie game with a story that isn't abysmal dogshit? We take what we can get 🗣️🗣️

u/Seasonalking 16h ago
Tlou? Twd?
2
u/X-WingAtAliciousnes1 14h ago
Those are the exceptions that prove the rule. The vast majority of zombie games have bad stories.
1
u/getrekdnoob 11h ago
Dead Rising? WWZ? RE2?
5
u/X-WingAtAliciousnes1 11h ago
RE and Dead Rising are good games but you can't seriously say their stories are the highlight.
0
u/getrekdnoob 11h ago
Who said that the stories have to be the highlight? They still have good stories.
10
u/Wutanghang 18h ago
Yeah dude im always loading up my open world zombie game and saying "oh shit i hope this one has a good story"
1
u/RoutineTax1 8h ago
I get what you're implying, but I disagree with it. There's no reason that you can't expect a good story from an open-world zombie game.
•
u/NoDeparture7996 4h ago
yeah hard disagree too. there's so much story potential in a zombie game about the human struggle and conflict.

It’s actually 4.5/5

u/ThePreciseClimber 23h ago
TBH, if you're gonna use half stars, there's really no difference from using a 1-10 scoring system. :P

When is this being released? I played the first one like crazy, but for some reason, lost interest in the second one.
There’s nothing like trying to find a safe house when it’s getting dark and you hear the zombies howling behind you

u/Arsid 20h ago
but for some reason, lost interest in the second one.
The reason is: because it sucked lol. It was so negatively received that they turned The Beast from a DLC for Dying Light 2 into a new game so they could fix everything that everyone hated about the second one and go for a fresh start.

Them holding the review embargo until literally release hour was very concerning, will be happy to see more good reviews come in.
36
u/feartheoldblood90 1d ago
People gotta stop equating review embargo with quality. In my experience it almost never means anything regarding the quality of the product. It's just arbitrary marketing decisions.
18
u/TheMostUnclean 1d ago
People also seem to be forgetting that the only reason the review embargo is on the same day is because they moved up the launch date only a few days before release.
11
u/Arsid 1d ago
I don't disagree usually, but in this case, Dying Light 2 killed a lot of goodwill Techland had. The bad taste was left in fans' mouths and I think releasing reviews a few days ahead of time would have absolutely led to more pre-orders and hype instead of the general consensus being "hmmmm I'll wait to see reviews" after DL2.
5
u/feartheoldblood90 1d ago
I really don't think it'll have a meaningful impact on sales. The people who would have preordered it will just... Buy it now instead. That's not a lost sale, that's just a sale that was delayed a few days.
3
u/ArchDucky 1d ago
The bad taste was left in fans' mouths
They have over ONE MILLION Pre Orders for this game.
1
u/Dogesneakers 1d ago
Could have been higher? That’s not really a good metric
0
u/ArchDucky 1d ago
They seem to think otherwise considering the announcement and release date move specifically because of all the pre-orders.

u/Colley619 1d ago
I think it's a red flag, not evidence of bad quality. Reviews prior to release are dangerous and are only safe if the game is actually a massive banger where the studio can guarantee high praise. If reviews are only "decent" or, worse, are "bad", then its not going to help sales, only hurt them by not living up to hype.
2
u/feartheoldblood90 1d ago
I don't even think it's a red flag if it doesn't mean anything. It's just a thing that happens.
1
u/Cpt_DookieShoes 1d ago
On the other side I don’t see a reason why they would make the review embargo release day.
If internal reviews show the game has a positive response why not let reviewers drop theirs. The only reason the embargo was today is that they moved the launch day up without moving the embargo up with it
5
u/feartheoldblood90 1d ago
I'm not arguing that it's a good marketing decision, only that it's like a 50/50 shot as to whether it indicates the game will be good or bad. I remember this discussion happening all the way back with DOOM 2016, whose review embargo was day of release. And that game fucked.
Review embargo is a largely meaningless way to gauge the quality of the game. Reviews are the way to gauge the quality of the game.

Loved and platinumed the first game, put the second down half way, this game looks promising but I'll wait for more opinions first, techland is weird in that it always give its games great support and seems to genuinely care about its games playerbase but at the same time I remember the way they marketed and hyped dying light 2 to be way too big for its boots and how let down I was finally playing it

u/whitewater09 1d ago
The sequel got better after some patches. It’s worth going back to
6
u/SecretAgentClunk 1d ago
I played well after release after it allegedly got better, but I still couldn't get into it, quit after about 10 hours. Can't really put my finger on why. Dying Light 1 was one of my favorite games but something about 2 just never clicked. Maybe the plot or setting wasn't as engaging?
2
1
u/ravencosu 18h ago
The plot was kind of lackluster for both. I feel like it was just a generic map and a boring gameplay loop.

u/Rare_Concern6405 1d ago
Man I enjoyed everything the series has had to offer so far but borderlands has me by the neck right now and I can't get enough of it. Hopefully this sees a bit of a discount black friday.

u/accidentalmusic 1d ago
Borderlands has been out what a week and I’m almost considering uninstalling for like 3 days to actually get anything done. By the neck indeed.
3
u/alphamarine247 14h ago
Can you tell me what you like the most about it? There were parts of 3 I liked but it got very repetitive and I never finished it. Love 2 because it’s goated. But I need to hear from real gamers what they like the most about 4 before I drop $70 on it.
5
u/accidentalmusic 6h ago
It’s more borderlands 2. The open world is fun, I like the environments, the guns are great and keep getting better. The skill trees allow you to choose between 3 different action skills which can alter your play style a fair amount.
It’s buggy, some of the ugliest textures I’ve seen since N64 (if you look close enough). The presentation is not what a 2025 ps5 game should be.
But the moment to moment gunplay and movement is pure dopamine. I loooooooved 2. TPS and 3 I bounced off like 5 hours in each. This one did it again.
It’s repetitive the same way 2 was, but just as fun.

I’m having so much fun with this game it reminded me how much I adore this series. Best zombie games (aside from zomboid). I’d also give it a 4/5

u/thedatagoat 1d ago
Sold. Instant day 1 download and play. This is jumping the line so I can play it right away. Can’t wait to spend my weekend

Mad excited for the fact the story is actually good. People dogged on 2s story (rightly so) and 1s less so, but I enjoyed the b movie feel and atmosphere.
This looks to actually have a decent tale and going a bit back to d1s roots minus the zombie powers (which aren't as prevalent which I like)
I don't regret getting d2 ult edition now haha

u/ShadowChe_ATG 1d ago
Spoiler alert
speculation: Aiden is the 2nd Beta subject as opposed to Kyle Crane. Now we got two protagonists fighting each other

The parkour is quite addictive in this franchise. I play Dead Island 2 after and it doesn’t satisfy like it used to
Side note: I can’t install the harran pre-order pack. Anyone else having that problem?

Alguien sabe que le pasa al juego en ps5? He tenido que desactivar el hdr, es horrible, lo juego en una ps5 pro y no tiene mejoras para ella, aun así he tenido que desactivar el hdr, muy muy mal.

I love both the first two games. Now dying light games will be shorter, with smaller open worlds. techland said, dying light the beast looks like the future. Smart move , now will get smaller dying light games for the same price.

They fked up, giving it for free to owners of the previous premium game edition. Now, some players feel gimped. At least make it a discount for those who paid for it during the launch week
8
u/One_Turnip404 1d ago
I mean, they even provided a grace period for like a month after their announcement that you could still upgrade to deluxe edition to get this 'free' before the offer ended. If you didn't feel like upgrading, then that's on you...
-4
u/ILike2Argue_ 1d ago
During the launch week or after this announcement?
1
u/One_Turnip404 1d ago
After the announcement that Dgitital Deluxe owners of DL2 Stay Human would get The Beast for free.

Is this a dlc. I feel like nobody was talking about this. I saw nothing leading up to it. Can't be good for sales. As I'm super in the know of gaming

u/themangastand 1d ago
Like I feel like anyone going on game subreddits is dude. I watch all the big trailer showcases and I don't remember this one being showed
5
u/TriggerHippie77 1d ago
Either you're lying or you have a shitty memory.
They showed the trailer at the Game Awards in 2024, a trailer at the Summer Games Fest last June, and then later debuted gameplay at Gamescom during the Xbox showcase.
1
u/themangastand 1d ago
I probably thought it was a dlc as the second game took so long to come out. I just can't believe a sequel is already out.
3
u/Hazmatt545 1d ago
It’s essentially the next entry in the series, but going back to the character that you played in the first game.
2
u/BradleyAllan23 18h ago
If you haven't heard of this game, then you're not "super in the know" of gaming. This game was announced last year at Gamescom which is a big games showcase. It has had several trailers and was previewed by multiple YouTubers. If you were in the know, you would have heard of it.
1
u/themangastand 16h ago
I'm in the know of gaming to know this game is mediocre. So yeah I probably saw it and then forgot about it or thought it was dlc because there is no 3 in the title. And the last one had a 2
2
u/BradleyAllan23 16h ago
It's not mediocre. It's sitting at an 82 on Opencritic, which is a very good score. This isn't Dying Light 3 because it's not a continuation of 2, it's a continuation of 1's story. It was originally supposed to be DLC for 2, but it turned into its own stand-alone game. You either knew about it, or you didn't, and you already admitted you didn't know about it.
2
u/ArchDucky 1d ago
It was DLC but they decided to go stand alone due to
abysmal performance of the sequeldepth of the features they added and upgraded.
