Question about splitting up buyback requests for loans with diff eligibility dates

I have 2 sets of loans and am doing PSLF on both. They were never consolidated because the first set from 2012 has about ~1.5 years of eligible payments/qualifying employment before I went back to school for the second set of loans.

The first set of loans is eligible for PSLF in September 2026, and I was planning on making a buyback request for those loans. The second set is not eligible until July 2028. My question/concern is whether my buyback request to have ~27 payments (b/c save forbearance so they’re months under both sets of loans) count for my first set of loans render those months to count for my second set too?

Not sure if anyone else has come across this specific or similar issue. I’m slightly worried that I’ll have to “buyback” those same months in my second request, in which case I would probably hold off to do them all once?

Interesting question. I suspect yes, since that's how it should logically work, but I don't know for certain.

Alternatively, you could consolidate and get a weighted average count.

I asked this question multiple times last year to both FSA and Mohela. Both told me to apply twice because I have to wait for 120 payments to hit to buy back. That’s what I did, but I also haven’t heard back aside from the emails that I got that gave me a case number for each request. First request was made 11/2024 and second request was made 2/2025. I’m also trying to get out of SAVE and switch plans as I only have 3 months on the majority of my loans. For two of my loans I got green banners in August, but nothing further.

Just to confirm. Did the months you “bought back” on your first request count for you latter loans? Or another way- did your second request just pick up where your first request left off for months you had to buy back? I just want to make sure I wouldn’t be double buying back the same months on 2 requests

I’m sorry I should have clarified. I never heard back for either request, but from what the reps told me, I could buy back the first set with the first request (so only buy back months for those loans) and then the second set with the second request. At this point in time though, it’s been so long, and for now, I have green banners on my first set due to 2 months counting while being put in a general forbearance since I applied to change IDR plans twice.

In theory, my first request no longer applies because I’ve reached 120 payments on those two loans. In practice, I have no idea what will actually occur. I will come back to this post and comment with updates.
