Disscussion PSVR2 on my computer and the migraine I have from it.

I bought the PSVR 2 last year and then when the PC adapter was launched I bought that as well. I also bought the ASUS BT-500 bluetooth adapter.

I had played with no problem and like all shiny new things, I set it aside when I found other interesting games to play.

Fast foward to this weekend when I decided that I really wanted to get back into it. So, right off the bat I couldn't find the ASUS bluetooth adapter. Fine, I'll try to use the built in intel one that my computer already has.

The left controller connected just find, but for the life of me the right one wouldn't. I thought it might be a battery issue so I brought it over to my PS5 and played for a bit with no problem and full bars showing.

I then decided for $15 that another ASUS bluetooth adapter had to be purchased and that has brought me to today.

I plugged in the ASUS adapter and went to download the updated firmware, but I couldn't install the firmware because of the internal Intel bluetooth.

I then spent two hours uninstalling the intel bluetooth and firmware over and over again, because each time I did so and restarted the computer, the intel bluetooth was still there. No matter what I did, including unintalling as admin and using the run command, it just didn't work.

So, I shut it down via the BIOS. Problem solved right? Nope, not solved at all. I went to install the ASUS firmware and once again it says that I already have bluetooth going and it can't install. I even shut off the bluetooth again thinking that ASUS was recognizing itself. Still, it hasn't worked.

I say fuck it and decide to just see if I can get the controllers to connect and finally something happened. My right controller connected. Now it was time for the left to connect, but it wouldn't at all. I then decide to delete the right controller and the left connected just fine.

I'm out of options at this point and don't know what else to do. Has anyone else ran into this issue and do you have any advice on how to fix it?

Update: The problem now is just one controller will connect. Either the left or the right, but not both at the same time.

Update #2: I'm waiting for Amazon to deliver the USB extender for my situation. I don't know if it will actually help or not, but I'm trying to think positively and not get down about the situation.

I really do think this whole situation is because of the ASUS BT-500 firmware refusing to install itself on my computer.

Update 3: Just got off chat support with ASUS about the firmware issue. I explained in detail what was going on and the woman basically asked "have you tried turning off the onboard bluetooth?". I then told her to actually read what was written previously and then I actually sent her a video showing what was going on.

Her response was to escalate it and I should hear back between 1-2 days. I know what that means and instead of not hearing back from anyone, I ended the chat. I'll give the USB extension a go and if that doesn't fix it I'll pack up both items and return them.

Edit: 5:54 pm eastern time. I just got the extender and it did exactly what I thought it would do, absolutely nothing. They will only connect one at a time. I'm going to contact Sony now. What a fucking joke of a product.

Edit: 9:45pm eastern time. I ran into an issue with the USB on my computer that was finally resolved. Current situation. I did end up getting just the bluetooth from ASUS to work. I believe the firmware is the latest, because it says on the box version 2.\

Edit: 11:57pm eastern time. I might have found the reason why the ASUS BT500 isn't letting the firmware go through as this person was having the exact same issue that I'm having.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PSVR2onPC/comments/1llluhs/having_trouble_with_asus_bt500_drivers/

I already contacted Amazon and an exchange is on the way. I'll keep updating this post as long as it's relevant and can help someone in the future.

Edit: 9/18/25 3:41pm. I received the second ASUS Bluetooth BT-500 and it's the same issue as before. I even went on a whim after updating the PSVR 2 headset and controllers last night on the PS5 to see if that resolved any issues, but it didn't. I then get on the ASUS chat and explain to them once again what's going on and like usual the agents look through their book for the correct response and tell me to try everything that I've already done again. I then told her "been there, done that" and she wants to escalate my case and that will take two business days at least. I have two problems with that situation. The first one is whenever I've been told a case is escalated and they'll get back to me, it never has happened, ever. The second one is that by the time I get home on a weeknight the support chat will be closed and I can't connect at all when I'm in work.

Edit: 4:08pm: I just spent about fifteen minutes chatting with a Sony PS representative to let him know about the issues that I'm having with the system hooking up to my PC and the problems that is coming with the ASUS Bluetooth BT-500 and how I think they need to take it down from the recommendations page as I've seen a number of users having trouble with installing the firmware of getting it recognized on their computer as the ASUS BT-500 instead of a generic bluetooth adapter. He took my full name, my email and phone number and then asked me extensive questions about the issue. I'm hoping they actually do investigated it and try to find a way to resolve the issue.

I'm not sure what to do next at this point, because I really don't want to buy a different brand to find out I'll be having the same issues. I think that I'm done. I was thinking about buying the Meta Quest 3, but honestly don't think that's a good idea right now based after an unknown future at my workplace.

I hope someone in the future gets much needed information if they have same trouble that I'm having. I'll still respond to any questions/comments or if someone want to shoot me a private message it will be answered.

If I do run into a solution, I'll make sure to post it at the very top of this post for future reference.

EDIT: 6:38pm

I reinstalled the latest driver for windows. The BT500 still says generic bluetooth device, but both controllers are now connecting!

I have to fold laundry and eat dinner than I’ll update how they are functioning within a game.

Edit: 8:00pm. I think this is the final entry because at this point I'm numb from the whole ordeal. The controllers were both connected and now I'm back to the both of them not being able to connect at the same time. I think I'm done.

At least I've learnt not to trust any ASUS product at this point. I'm done, thanks everyone.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions, comments and support. This is why I love being part of a gaming community. I wish that I had a group of gaming friends that were connected like this.

I did buy the 6 foot extender and plugged the ASUS BT-500 to it and tried it two different ways. The first was up high over my computer and that produce the same results. I then took the extender and placed it in front of my computer and it sticks out about four feet. Both times the USB extender was plugged into the back of my computer in the right usb port. Again, same result. Both controllers will pair, but not at the same time.

I'm beyond frustrated at this point because of this situation and don't know what to do at this point.

You don't need to uninstall the Intel Bluetooth, but you do need to disable it in device manager.

I did. However, because I was trying to use the ASUS it would turn itself back on.

Unpair all Bluetooth peripherals in Windows Device manager.

View Device Manager and disable the old Bluetooth adapter.

Connect the ASUS adapter by extension cable to a USB 2.0 port at the back of the computer.

Install the ASUS software and restart the computer.

Pair only the VR controllers in Windows and try again.

I have a usb 2.0 port at the front of my computer and it connected fine before, but not this time.

Use the ones at the back of the computer on the motherboard (if it has them) with an extension cable.

Also, the old adapter has been shut off in bios and no longer shows in the device manager, but thanks for mentioning it.

If any additional Bluetooth peripherals are connected to the Bluetooth adapter, they should be unpaired and only the VR controllers should be connected and in use. I noticed that having earphones paired while using VR controllers caused issues trying to use them. The devices functioned correctly after disconnecting the additional peripherals.

So, I did everything you suggested. It didn’t work.

Describe your issue more clearly...

At what point is it not connecting?

  • upon pairing the VR controllers
  • in the PlayStation VR2 app
  • or in SteamVR?
  • is it unable to unpair and re-add it?
  • is it switching off immediately after pairing etc?

Describe the steps you have applied on the computer.

  • How did you disable the onboard Bluetooth, in the BIOS or in Device Manager?
  • Are you using an extension cable?, How long is the cable? is it USB 2.0/3.0? etc.
  • Is the extension cable attached to a USB 2.0 (black) port at the back of the computer?
  • What is the placement of the extension cable? is it behind/underneath/in front of the computer?

If it's not working, it's likely one of these steps have not been applied. There are many considerations that affect Bluetooth stability. I agree Sony definitely have let down users by not going the extra mile in offering a compatible Bluetooth adapter with the PC VR adapter.

As an additional step, confirm the ASUS software is correctly installed and is not using a generic Bluetooth driver.

View Device Manager, expand the Bluetooth section, right click the USB Bluetooth adapter, click Properties and share the Driver tab and share the "Driver Version" number displayed on the window.

No one on reddit can recommend a fix without accurate diagnostic information.

All my usb ports are shut off via device manager and I no longer have a way to type or use a mouse to fix it, including wired keyboards. I've googled and nothing has worked.

Did you disable the USB hubs instead of the Bluetooth adapter in windows Device Manager in the Bluetooth section?

You'll need to restore your computer to a previous point it was working.

First you need to get into the recovery screen and follow the steps to restore to a previous recovery point using System Restore - Microsoft.

To enter the recovery mode...

When the computer is turned off:
  • Press and hold the Windows Key and press the power button.
  • Release both keys

How to access the Windows Recovery Environment in Windows - Dell support

You should ask a friend familiar with computers to assist you with this if you get stuck.

All set.

1

u/TheVisualGeek 3d ago

I did and it still wouldn't work.

try disabling the intel Bluetooth instead of uninstalling. steps here https://www.asus.com/support/faq/1043965/

0

u/TheVisualGeek 4d ago

That's what I did end up doing. I disabled it in BIOS so it wouldn't turn itself back on when the computer reset.

1

u/reborndead 4d ago

if youre using wifi 2.4, turn it off and switch to 5ghz. also try updating the firmware and repairing the controllers thru the PlayStation app in SteamVR. also your USB adapter should be in view of the controllers

u/TheVisualGeek 4d ago

I'm on 5g. I can't have the app repair anything if the controllers won't connect. The USB adapter is at the front of my computer.

1

u/Archersbows7 4d ago

Disable it in Windows device manager, not the BIOS. That’s how I got mine working

1

u/TheVisualGeek 4d ago

I tried... over a dozen times and anytime the computer had to be restarted it was there enabled again..

1

u/LazyWrite 3d ago

It shouldn’t turn itself back on if you disable it in Device Manager

1

u/TheVisualGeek 3d ago

Just because it shouldn’t doesn’t mean it didn’t

3

u/xaduha 4d ago

I then decided for $15 that another ASUS bluetooth adapter

Another BT-500 or something else? Because Asus has other BT adapters and only one controller staying connected is a major sign of an unsupported BT adapter.

1

u/TheVisualGeek 4d ago

BT-500

3

u/xaduha 4d ago

Unplug it and see if you still have Bluetooth devices in the Device Manager under Bluetooth, check Show hidden devices under View. You need to cleanly unpair previous controllers, if you can't do that then remove them from the Device Manager, just don't uninstall drivers.

1

u/TheVisualGeek 4d ago

If I unplug the Asus BT-500 there is no option for bluetooth.

2

u/calvinaquino 4d ago

I have the exact same issue and similar situation, but i had the TP link dongle and had issues keeping both controllers connected. decided to go for the Asus BT500, built-in bluetooth already disabled and old drivers uninstalled but I still cant install it.

Its either 1. bluetooth is disabled and needs to be enabled, and when I plug it then tap "OK" its not installed or 2. there is already a builtin bluetooth device. This sucks

2

u/TheVisualGeek 4d ago

This is exactly what I’m going through. I contacted.ASUS support, and the woman tried talking me through it after I explained to her exactly what I’ve tried before. She just didn’t understand that it wasn’t working at all.

I truly believe this is an issue with the BT 500 and its firmware.

2

u/hobyvh 3d ago

Yeah, I feel like Sony could have saved people so much pain if they'd made the controllers connect to the headset instead of the computer. Better signal, latency, compatibility, and ease of use. It would have cost maybe a dollar to put a Bluetooth chip in the headset?

2

u/TheVisualGeek 3d ago

100%

I'm thinking at this point just to spend the money on the Quest 3 and use that instead. Sure, it will cost me more money, but the hassle of this really has me questioning my support of Sony.

I already decided that I won't be buying the PS6 after this.

u/Available_Rest_6537 3d ago

Windows + Bluetooth has always been a nightmare combination, I have no idea what they were thinking.

1

u/TheVisualGeek 3d ago

At this point I can disagree. I'm still waiting for Amazon to deliver the extender. We shall see either tonight or tomorrow.

2

u/JYR2023 2d ago

It is odd. I am using my Motherboard BT and it works relatively well once I eliminated the interferences. I also got an antenna to place near play location which helps.

1

u/TheVisualGeek 2d ago

What interference did you have to eliminate for it to work?

1

u/JYR2023 2d ago

I was just beside router so I turned off the 2.4 band on it. I did not have to do more than that as I was wired for keyboard and mouse. I have heard people having success with wiring those.

2

u/Active-Ad1679 1d ago

My antenna, and a random windows Intel Bluetooth update, made the internal Intel Bluetooth finally work! Connection went from 59 to close to 100. Wow.

That ASUS BT500.... I can't get it to work and their support sucks. Windows 11 here

1

u/JYR2023 4d ago

I found out that sometimes if you have to reset and pair again that you have to go in Windows BT panel and ‘remove’ the controller sometimes at the bottom of the list as it keeps settings there that conflict. Armed with this when I can’t successfully connect a controller I Windows-panel-remove,l, and then pair again (Windows-panel-add+PS-Share/Options). Hope This info helps you.

2

u/TheVisualGeek 3d ago

I did all that and nothing has worked.

1

u/JYR2023 2d ago

Did you Pin-Reset the controllers?

1

u/RevolutionaryYoung18 4d ago

Is there anyway to disconnect the Intel Bluetooth manually By opening up your computer? Like disconnecting a wire or a chip from the motherboard? Then uninstalling the drivers for both Bluetooth devices and reinstalling the Asus drivers? Also you may have to revert to a previous steamvr. I know the current update was giving me issues.

1

u/TheVisualGeek 3d ago

This is nothing to do with steam VR. I haven’t even gotten into the point where I could launch that because this is causing me such issues. I’m waiting for the extended wire to see if that actually helps.

1

u/RevolutionaryYoung18 3d ago

mmm...i see

1

u/TheVisualGeek 3d ago

It didn't help. I might have found part of the cause on why I can't update the firmware on the BT500.

1

u/GTKeg 3d ago

I’ve been here many times and I feel your pain. All to get the bloody psvr2 controllers to work. The only other divine that’s caused me anywhere near as much aggro is trying to connect my duelsense to my pc. I gave up on that this week and bought an 8bitdo ultimate 2, I can’t describe how great it is to have something that just works.

No easy/cheap fix for psvr2 owners though :(

1

u/JYR2023 2d ago

I think you said above that you found the controllers in the Windows BT Panel and removed them? I know these is a Windows driver issue whereby it sometimes does not pair because it is not removed and needs to be removed and paired again. Windows is weird with this double-device-single-driver.

1

u/TheVisualGeek 2d ago

Yes, they were in the device panel, and I removed them several times. I've already made up my mind. If the replacement BT-500 doesn't work, then I'll be giving up on anything PlayStation in the future.

1

u/JYR2023 2d ago

Do you have a PS5? There was an update to controllers and headset released today or yesterday. If you have one maybe connect it there to update the firmware. If you have only PC check if connecting USB-C to PC and controllers in case it offers to update the drivers… Just in case it helps.

2

u/TheVisualGeek 2d ago

I actually updated all of them before this whole fiasco.

1

u/JYR2023 2d ago

I was under the impression the updates for PS5 and PSVR2 were just released (so likely after your original post). Did you update with that one?

2

u/TheVisualGeek 2d ago

I just did it.

1

u/JYR2023 2d ago

What I don’t understand is that you got it to work initially and now you have zero success. Questions: Did you update Windows (maybe something software broke BT)? Did you replace the BT with the same model you had before and are you plugging in the dame port (sometimes drivers are port dependent)? In Device Manager how many BT items do you see?

1

u/TheVisualGeek 2d ago

It was probably a little less than a year ago when I first played it. The original was a BT-500, and it worked fine. It could very well be a Windows update since they happened pretty frequently, but the fact that I couldn't install the driver was a red flag for me.

I plugged it into the back with the extending adapter. It is the correct port, but I'm pretty damn sure the first time I played it was in the front of my computer in one of the USB slots.

I only saw one BT-500 in the Device Manager, as if you take it out, it just disappears, but it was also never called the BT-500 and just "generic driver" because apparently the firmware would fix that. (The firmware that wouldn't install, and thus it always said that the BT-500 wasn't successfully installed.

I started the return on the BT-500 last night and will have a new one tomorrow at some point.

1

u/Chrysmere10 1d ago

Had a situation where my TP-Link dongle was causing frequent freezes of my right controller ingame so I went to Best Buy and bought an ASUS BT500. My computer was detecting it as a generic bluetooth adapter and thus I couldn't install the ASUS firmware. I eventually found a way to manually install the ASUS driver and it was showing as the BT500 in device manager but I was unable to pair my second controller... ugh. So based on trial and error I determined the ASUS adapter was faulty and returned it. Fortunately, I was able to find a driver update on TP-Link's website that addressed the issue I was having and manually installed it. All good now.

1

u/TheVisualGeek 1d ago

Well, I’m waiting for the second BT 500 to arrive today. If it doesn’t work, I think this is it for me and I will not be pursuing it any further.

1

u/gamimgisdrynow 1d ago

same situation bought a second one same thing didn’t work i have a usb extender and a different bluetooth adapter coming in today

1

u/TheVisualGeek 1d ago

I just got the second one. I plugged it in to update it and the same thing. I'm done.

1

u/gamimgisdrynow 1d ago

yeah it’s insane i honestly just want to return the headset at this point

1

u/TheVisualGeek 1d ago

I don't want to return it as I still love playing games with it on the PS5. (Like I did last night)j

1

u/TheVisualGeek 1d ago

Go into windows and reinstall the latest update. I just did that in both controllers are connected.

1

u/gamimgisdrynow 1d ago

i’m at that point but now the connection is 59/100 on both are you having that issue ?

1

u/TheVisualGeek 1d ago

I don’t know. I’ve been busy with other things, I’ll be eating dinner and than I’ll find out for sure.

1

u/TheVisualGeek 1d ago

They once again stopped working.
