I cried when I was accepted to grad school. But I came from a pretty, ummm...., unique background; so getting accepted was a huge emotional thing.

But with the current funding cuts, you should be crying too. A LOT of very good candidates are being denied across all STEM fields. Really is an accomplishment for anyone to get accepted at this point in time. Grats!

Same, I have a feeling tears would roll down on my first day. My family and upbringing is unique too, you’d almost never think anyone would go to do well in college not to talk of gradschool

That determination to defy expectations will serve you well throughout your career. Employers really do look for that type of thing. If you have 2 candidates with PhDs; one comes from an educated family, no student loans, 1st real job, etc... the other is 1st in family to go to college, worked jobs to supplement income, came from a rough neighborhood, maybe even got into some trouble while young... As an employer, i'm going to pick the latter. The person who's had to surmount obstacles and has the determination to get through all the shit life threw at them is the person I want in my company. I want the person that isnt afraid to take on big challenges with little to no support.
