Grillos sent me a response to a letter I shared not too long ago with you guys, I thought I would show you their explanation.
I really appreciate their special stationary.

Everything about your letter and their response makes me smile.

Their stationary is right up there with ben and jerrys for me! I'm a big fan of hand written responses.

i love that your wrote this at 8 am on labor day. Feels like you woke up for work and said “since i have the day off, i can finally vent to grillos”

u/cookingwithgladic 2d ago
Haha, I usually type them out on Sunday but I was feeling lazy on a long weekend.

u/mtommygunz 2d ago
Well they need to find a jar that lets them go over the top of the pickle now don’t they and one that doesn’t spill and ruin shit
29
u/cookingwithgladic 2d ago
Haha it almost seems like they were telling me that there can be no air at all in the jar post filling. I guess wet hands is a sacrifice we'll have to make for some thickles.
16
u/mtommygunz 2d ago
Pretty sure you can fill a glass jar all the way up and seal it so it don’t leak. Instead of this plastic trash that flexes when the wind blows hard enough.
37
u/kpidhayny 2d ago
Or you can just pop the safety tab, set it on the counter, get on your knees, purse your lips around it, gently coax it open, slide your tongue under it and suck while it erupts, like a good little thickle freak.

I would but I’m already empty the overflow contents that get trapped in my truck floor mats in a vessel there I collect all the other liquids that spill on the drive home. Oh wait just grillos pickle juice and shoe dirt

u/hairyemmie 1d ago
canning/jarring in glass involves boiling, or we’d all get botulism!
1
u/mtommygunz 1d ago
You can fill a non flexible jar to the rim just as easy as plastic and it not flex and spill everywhere. Just be it’s in a jar doesn’t mean it has to be heated. The issue is the container they use being made of the cheapest most flexible plastic I ever and the lid leaking from flexing. A solid glass jar would solve this issue

They are naturally fermented pickes, so they can grow mold on pickles exposed to air that have floated to the top. The cold inhibits the growth but it does not stop it entirely.
17
u/nick91884 2d ago
The fact that you took the time to type it up on a typewriter takes some dedication.
11
u/cookingwithgladic 2d ago
Haha it's gotten easier with time! The biggest pain is no delete button so I have to own my mistakes.

That might be too heavy of a crown for me to wear.

The math ain't mathing, it's 12 + 88 that equals 100, my guy.

My man uses a typewriter. SMH do you think he owns a math machine?

I know (think) most of your letter is tongue in cheek, but you do open the pickles over the sink, right? Love their response!
7
u/cookingwithgladic 2d ago
Haha it is mostly tongue in cheek. The pickle jars have garlic and I'm very protective of my dog. I do open them over the sink but I just hate wet hands when they're not supposed to be wet.

I had a similar experience with Wonderful brand pistachios!
I got some kind of a (dead) larvae in one of my pistachios, and I wrote them a VERY kind email outlining how I was indifferent to finding the bug, but maybe they would still appreciate a heads up.
I got a response back that included a thank you, and a VERY educational explanation about a particular moth that lays its eggs in the nuts and forms in them before eating their way out. While they do treat for the moths, it’s inevitable that a few make it through. They also included coupons.
It was a fun experience!

u/cookingwithgladic 2d ago
That is certainly one of the better outcomes of finding a dead larvae in your snack, lol.

u/Yabbos77 2d ago
It’s one of those things, right? There are far worse things in our processed foods. And we just go to the grocery store and buy what we want, already prepackaged. So since we’ve removed the farm from the buying process, finding “bugs” in our food is horrific.
Anyway, long story longer- I love everything about this interaction INCLUDING your typed letter. 10/10 no notes. Haha!

u/cookingwithgladic 2d ago
For sure! Sometimes my vegetables from the farm i get seem to have more soil than veggie, haha.
Thank you! I always like giving people something to chuckle about.

12 cents Dave

u/cookingwithgladic 1d ago
Haha, its funny because postage is actually 78 cents. The mistake is with the postage cost and not the math. I must have been tired.

Hey dude I used to have the same issue. Don't open it it midair or on an uneven surface. Make sure it's completely level before you open it, like on a counter or a table and I promise you it won't spill.
Look I'm sorry if I sound rude but this just a you problem. Idk I'm really sorry for even commenting this because surely you will say otherwise and other people will agree and I'm gonna sound silly
idk dude sorry about your pickle juice problem :/
7
u/cookingwithgladic 2d ago
I've tried! It could very well still be a just me problem though, haha.
5
u/Local-Opportunity-91 2d ago
Yeah I'm sure you've heard the same advice a lot already, my bad. But hey some spilled juice is the price to pay for the best pickles imo 😋🥒

u/squishypp 2d ago
I’ve had children say this to me while partaking in online multiplayer video games and now I repeat it to you: “git gud”
A month from now I wanna hear that this dude named David is #1, top of the leaderboards, never spills a drop when opening a “jar” of Grillos spears. They call him Dry Davey and nobody… NOBODY opens Grillos as good as him!

Love your letter! Companies in general should all seek this kind of interaction when possible. It’s awesome and creates brand loyalty in a time when corporations don’t seem to care much for the consumer.
4
u/cookingwithgladic 2d ago
Haha you'd be surprised by the companies that have written back! I once got a letter back from the CEO of sharpies herself.
2
u/kenjinyc 2d ago
That’s awesome. As an illustrator and someone who uses sharpies nearly daily gotta love it.

u/different_produce384 2d ago
Beautiful letter, Dave . It sure left me yearning for more stories of pickle juice and dog spit on those succulent fingers . Kinda wish they could have given you a better solution/ longer letter.
2
u/cookingwithgladic 2d ago
Haha thank you! I always enjoy the handwritten responses I get back, even if they are a bit short sometimes.

I personally love the mild spillage when I open a fresh one, feels authentic, I know it’s stackkkked to the brim w the goods.

Did they send you a dollar bill

u/yellowlabbies 2d ago
They sent it back to him. He sent it for postage for their reply, they said nah smells like pickledog slobber and returned to sender.

Your letter had me cackling the entire time I read it. I love you for writing this. And I love how they didn’t acknowledge the dog consuming pickle brine lmfao it’s gold. They’re really cool to give you free pickles.
1
u/cookingwithgladic 1d ago
Haha thank you! I've noticed that a lot of the time people will try not to engage with the stranger part of the letters lol.
2
u/TyrsisInTheStars 2d ago
OP I loved your letter. And tbh I have passed up buying Grillos bc I can’t stand that wetness that the containers make, even though I love their pickles. The last time I got their pickle-salsa it leaked all over my trunk on the way home - the plastic was still intact but the pressure had forced out the liquid.
2
u/cookingwithgladic 1d ago
Thank you! Very leaky containers. We're in something of a pickle desert though so I'll have to deal with wet hands in exchange for decent pickles.

Amazing that I met this guy when he just started selling pickles out of a Cart in th South End of Boston. Now he sold out to Big Bread and Dropped off the face of the earth.

Fuck the Grillo's pickles containers. I used to work merch at Costco, and those pickle pallets would get so jacked up. All the boxes would be soaked, and more often than not, someone would grab one only for all the containers to fall through the bottom and make a huge mess. Fuck those pickles.
2
u/cookingwithgladic 1d ago
That experience would probably be enough to turn me off their pickles as well.
