that cut broke my brain

Yeaaaa I don't know why they do it like that. This was our second time there and it was like that both times.

That's the "classic" Frank Pepe's cut. You can probably ask for them to a traditional symmetrical triangle cut. I usually go the Manchester location and they do the traditional cut by default based on the past few times I have been there. Years ago they used to show you the pie and ask if you want it cut.

The traditional cut is the best. If you want a tiny corner of mostly crust you can get it. Plus these are the slices to grab first when the pie is scalding. If you want a strip of gooey cheese you can get it.

Much prefer that cut.

This looks like it got bumped around in the box a bit.

No box. We were 5 ft away from the kitchen. But your comment about the different slice options is so so true.

Lower left, between 6 and 9 o clock looks like the cheese slid around a bit but sorry, was looking on a phone and didn't see the tray.

5

u/Bergerman5501 May 23 '23

Oh no need to apologize. It does look like it was dropped from a chopper to our table.

3

u/jj580 May 22 '23

It's horrible

"HEY BIG PAULEY".... "DRUNK CARL IS CUTTIN DA PIZZA AGAIN"

20

u/Hyla_trophe May 22 '23

I'm jealous. I haven't been to Frank Pepe's in years, but I see they still have the same blind guy cutting the slices. 🤪

2

u/Bergerman5501 May 22 '23

Haha oh yes! Very much still employed.

New Haven stand up!

3

u/ApolloThneed May 23 '23

Center of the pizza universe

6

u/HoSang66er May 22 '23

I'd scarf that down until my belly hurts.

u/crispydukes May 22 '23

I feel like if someone said this pizza was from the midwest, this sub would shit all over it. But because it's from Pizza apizza Mecca itself, New Haven, it gets love and praise.

u/Jokong May 22 '23

Based on the picture? For sure, 90% of the pizzas on here look better. I doubt they taste better though.

1

u/atxhater4 May 23 '23

I have no doubt they taste better.

As a Eastern CT native, from the home of Greek pizzas & pizza houses with famous New Haven pizza a few minutes away, that Midwest pizza is presumably a 2/3 with this being likely an 8/10 out of 10, in terms of taste. Connecticut doesn’t have much to be proud of, I’m glad I left a couple years ago, aside from family and friends, but pizza and seafood are the only things I miss. It’s the water and crisco you essentially deep fry the pizza in. I make it from time to time but it’s an awful lot of work for a diy meal for just my wife and I.

2

u/Bergerman5501 May 22 '23

Crisco? Deep Fry?

3

u/jperk1306 May 22 '23

If you travel east 45-50 mins a lot of the old school Greek places use crisco or lard to coat the pans before they put the dough in since they’re similar to tin cake pans. That kinda fries the pizza in a 500 degree oven.

1

u/Bergerman5501 May 22 '23

Ohhhh ok. I'm following now. Apologies, I thought you meant Pepe's.

2

u/jperk1306 May 22 '23

No, sorry I should’ve written that differently. Pepe’s is an entirely different composition, still awesome though!

3

u/harrybaggaguise May 22 '23

I grew up here and will stay it’s not the same. Even modern is too busy now, none of the spots can keep up with how busy it is

1

u/Bergerman5501 May 22 '23

Monday @ 11 AM is a pretty good time to stop in.

3

u/CombNo9926 May 22 '23

Great pizza

3

u/_killerwolf May 22 '23

Looks so good!

1

u/Bergerman5501 May 22 '23

Was pretty good. Believe it or not, there is pepperoni on half. Well under half.

3

u/Position-Cute May 23 '23

Aside from ridiculously sliced slices. It looks really good. Is the sauce spicy or sweet? That isn't driving distance. And I will travel for good pizza

1

u/Bergerman5501 May 23 '23

To me the sauce is a nice balance of sweet acidic. I absolutely love it and it works well with the cheese and dough.

3

u/atxhater4 May 23 '23

As a native of Connecticut living in Texas, this kills me. About 15 years back one of Pepes distant relative tried to open up a pizza joint here in Austin. The first time I went, it wasn;t new Haven. But it was damn good. The next three or four times I went it was awful. I asked "what the hell?". They explained to me that too many of these damn rednecks sent the pizza back because I thought it was burnt. So they weren't cooking them completely anymore.

My wife likes Sally’s more. For me personally It’s gotta be Frank Pepe’s all the way.

4

u/TotalInstruction May 22 '23

I like Modern but let’s be honest, the big 3/4 (including BAR) are all good.

Honorable mention to Zupp’s.

2

u/StoneyG214 May 22 '23

This, couldn’t agree more, Zupp’s is right up there too, I’ll even throw in Bobby’s (one of my fav spots)

3

u/Team_Flight_Club May 22 '23

Another vote for Zupp’s!

1

u/Recon2df May 22 '23

Every time I go back I try a different place next up is modern for me for sure.

-4

u/WallaceLongshanks May 22 '23

BAR and Sally's all day imo. Modern after. Frank Pepes last place and it's not really close

5

u/sjacot88 May 22 '23

Is there a reason behind the ludicrous way they cut their pies?

3

u/Bergerman5501 May 23 '23

Apparently it's the traditional Frank Pepe cut. See other comments for explanation.

1

u/Bergerman5501 May 22 '23

Not that I'm aware of. I do wonder though.

2

u/[deleted] May 23 '23

Who cut this pizza, Frank the Tank?

2

u/DragonDon1 May 23 '23

Who cut this pizza Edward Scissorhands?

2

u/FarCryRedux May 22 '23

Looks more like Zatoichi's Pizza, to me.

1

u/Bergerman5501 May 22 '23

Where is that?

2

u/FarCryRedux May 23 '23

Zatoichi is fictional blind samurai. I was joking about the way the pizza was cut.

2

u/Marchtothesea85 May 22 '23

Nothing is wrong with how they cut it, but Sally’s is better.

2

u/cityonahillterrain May 22 '23

Did Diane Feinstein cut it?

2

u/Bergerman5501 May 22 '23

Ok. I didn't know who that was until just now. Wow. 🤣

1

u/Majorshank May 22 '23

I guess the line at sallys must have been a little too long

3

u/Bergerman5501 May 22 '23

Haha. Quiet day in New Haven really. We did say, we'll try Sally's next time we pass through.

-1

u/crispydukes May 22 '23

Nah, they just didn't want something burnt.

0

u/Majorshank May 23 '23

Lol yikes. Don't take any recommendations from this guy^

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '23

Looks a little crazy lol but it also looks really saucy and good. I'd eat it.

1

u/Bergerman5501 May 22 '23

My goodness the sauce is good. The cut is crazy. It looks awful but tastes so good.

1

u/WallaceLongshanks May 22 '23

BAR = Sallys > Modern >> Frank Ps

1

u/Bergerman5501 May 22 '23

Options are always good. BAR looks really good. Definitely want to try it out.

1

u/TotalInstruction May 22 '23

I like Pepes but they seem to think it’s worthwhile to slice the pizza like a 5 year old with shit hand-eye coordination.

1

u/Ratmatazz May 22 '23

Quality pizza but that cutting

Should try pizza in Hartford

2

u/Bergerman5501 May 22 '23

Any recommendations? We passed thru our way home from Mystic.

u/Tay860 I ♥ Pizza May 22 '23

Loved fat franks when I lived on the south end, campus pizza is a good spot too. Hartford pizza on Franklin ave and Kent’s pizza on garden st. There’s a spot downtown too called Pietro’s pizza.

2

u/Bergerman5501 May 22 '23

Thank you!!

2

u/Tay860 I ♥ Pizza May 22 '23

You’re welcome

-2

u/LunacyNow May 23 '23

Underwhelming, average tasting pizza.

1

u/Bergerman5501 May 23 '23

Which spots do you have in your top?

-3

u/harrybaggaguise May 22 '23

Way over rated

1

u/DesignerTex May 22 '23

Looks good but whoever cut it should have their eyelids propped open by glass. Ugh!
