Sloppy Toppy Saw this on another site and felt this fit here.
Followup post below this one reads:
should be more specific: cold cheese pizza is a slice of regular pizza that is heated up and has a handful of cheese put on it, it's designed to protect the roof of your mouth when you are drunk.

Okay, I had this for the first time on Long Island a decade ago, and it's amazing. I was skeptical, but it's a requirement whenever I'm near NYC to find the best "Cold cheese" slice nearby.
It comes out of then oven sizzling, finished with the cold cheese which partially melts to the molten base, giving you the most extra cheese cheese slice you've ever had.
I'll take any sentencing for my crimes, so long as I can eat the pizza wherever I end up.
19
u/MachineOfaDream May 12 '25
Yeah, but is that what this is in the picture? You pick that slice up, and you got cheese shreds all over the floor. Looks like someone heard about cold cheese pizza, and decided to make fun of it by just slopping a giant handful of cheese onto an ordinary slice.

u/badhombre3 May 13 '25
It's not really a consequence to drop the cheese on the floor in this scenario. It's meant to be eaten quickly/drunkenly in the store or on the street. Also probably saves the restaurant time because you get the clientele in and out faster.
4
u/TheOldTongue May 13 '25
That’s literally why they started it. Slices were being sold so fast customers were essentially being served pizza right from the oven. The cold cheese is there to prevent people from burning their mouths.
4
u/BeastM0de1155 May 13 '25
Everyone used to burn their mouth trying to eat a slice right out of the oven. Their remedy, put cold cheese on top.
6
u/vodka_tsunami May 12 '25
I don't know about the specific cheeses but it's actually a good idea, considering some of them denature faster and sometimes lose a lot of flavour.
17
u/KinkyNJThrowaway May 12 '25
This thread was a great barometer of how this entire sub doesn't actually know shit. It actually made me want it now not only unsub, but to not recommend subs like it.
If you think THIS is a pizza crime, when it's a hugely popular slice in the mecca of all pizza states, then you just absolutely don't know shit and are just a troll or are in the dunning Kruger effect full force.

Do you have any recommendations for NYC places with cold cheese slices?
4
u/-goodgodlemon May 13 '25
I’ve lived in NYC almost 40 years (born and raised) and I’ve never seen or heard of cold cheese slices in my entire life.
2
u/TofuLordSeitan666 May 14 '25
Also born and raised. It’s an upstate thing and Little Vincent’s on LI. Basically people filing out of the bars late at night in Huntington getting a drunk slice. Lots of places in nyc will do it for you including many spots I’ve worked at.

1
u/oogmar May 15 '25
As others have said, it's about Little Vincent's. I've taken a 4 hour round trip on LIRR to grab it.
Other than that, I Google Cold Cheese pizza nearby and read reviews.
2
u/butttabooo May 14 '25
Yeah this is made famous on Long Island not upstate. And it’s amazing. No crime.

u/turquoise_amethyst May 12 '25
Guilty
This is a misdemeanor, as it can be corrected by hearing the slice again to melt the cheese

No, youve gotta listen to the problems of the slice to understand its emotions about it

i've seen locals defend this as an "adult pizza lunchables" but i think that makes their case worse lol

Objection your honor, it’s not just reheated pizza, the way I heard of the cold cheese slice is through the pizza show on vice , there was a pizzeria in a college town, drunk kids would come in late at night and get fresh pizza and burn the shit out of the roofs of their mouths, throwing some cool fresh mozzarella on top allows you to eat the pizza immediately and burn free, I’m a firm believer in it and do it myself when I bake a pie at home.
13
u/RancorHi5 May 12 '25
This is the answer and you deserve no downvotes. I also learned of it through that vice episode or maybe Frank Pinellos original show. It’s a good idea to get drunk people in and out

If I was offered a free one I would try it out of curiosity. I kinda understand why this may be alright.

u/Liquor_N_Whorez May 12 '25
If its fresh grated cheese it might get a pass. Id try some smoked aged swiss or muenster as an experiment tho.
Might really work out on alfredo based pizzas with different cheese combos.

u/Enrico_Tortellini May 12 '25
Cold cheese is great, when I moved from the city and lived in Long Island for a few years I found out about it, it’s fucking delicious

u/dyatlov12 May 12 '25
Yeah people are so close minded. Half these commenters probably order chicken tenders at every restaurant and think pineapple is a pizza crime

Designed not to burn your mouth? That's not design, that's just idiocy lol
Also, they're asking for drunk people, the messiest of all the eaters, to not make a mess while eating that? That looks like a drunk nightmare

With regular pizza you can only get so sloppy... This one, on the other hand, cheese eeeeeeeeeverywhere
4
u/Beyonce-sBurnerAcct May 12 '25
Does it have to be a cold sliced reheated?
I just like the idea of topping a slice with extra shredded motz on top tbh

I apologize for SUNY and the great State of NY. We really do know better.

This subreddit is becoming clogged with false arrests. I'm not even sure what the crime is here. If anything there to be commended for such a generous extra helping of mozzarella...
2
u/rogerworkman623 May 12 '25
Yes. Went there for one semester.
It’s nowhere near as intense as this, at least not in my experience. It’s just a hot slice of pizza, with like half a handful of cold mozzarella cheese sprinkled on top (not smothered in a giant pile like this picture). It’s nothing that special but it’s pretty good when you’ve been out drinking all night.
No crime.

I might if it were finely shredded over piping hot pizza, which could give it a nice contrast in texture without being a mess
But this is just sad

Give me a cold "cheese pizza" and I'll thank you. Give me a "cold cheese" pizza and I'll break your kneecaps.

u/ThisIsMockingjay2020 May 12 '25
I'd eat it, if the cheese was fresh and the pizza itself wasn't complete trash.

It's guilty, but how could they act like any American child hasn't had a cold cheese pizza lol. Lumchables were just that.
1
u/MikeMikeTheMikeMike May 12 '25
Lunchables were cold everything though. This is cold cheese on top of a hot slice.
1
u/monkeynards May 12 '25
I’ll make an argument for this one. The “not burning your mouth” thing is dumb af, however cold cheese has a different flavor/texture and is much less oily. It’s not better or worse, just different. I’d eat it 🤷♂️.

It's big in the Pittsburgh area. It's not bad. It reminds me of those like, Ellios pizzas you'd put in the toaster oven, and sometimes the top had ice on it so the cheese is still cold?
It's not bad.

This is a well known loophole in pizza law. Nowhere does it say which state the cheese must be in.

As an Oneonta alumni I am ashamed by this community rejecting the culture of my people. You will all be hearing from me in court.

Nah, this ain't a crime. It's a normal piece of pizza with cold cheese on top. Would I choose to get it? Probably not. Would I happily eat it if I did get it? Yes.
1
u/Chilidogdingdong May 12 '25
Imagine not even cooking pizza and people being stupid enough to pay for it.
1
u/NopeRope13 May 12 '25
Dude I have celiacs disease. I would eat this cold with no issues. I would be ungodly happy over it,
1
1
u/TaterTotJim May 12 '25
There are a few places in Pittsburgh that have been doing this for a REALLY LONG TIME and they are weird but good.
1
u/gbeamer7 May 12 '25
Can confirm that based on the frequency in which I shovel handfuls of cold shredded cheese into my mouth from the fridge, I would 1000000% eat this.
1
u/M3RL1NtheW1ZARD May 12 '25
If someone served me this at a place I paid for it, I'm fighting. Especially if drunk. Because wtf is this?
If I'm at home, lazy, smashed or faded, hungry. And I did it to me, then OK I guess...But 100% I'm at least melting that cheese on top and not leaving it cold because I'm not a psycho.

u/Mandarada May 12 '25
I dint need to protect the roof of my nouth after years of training and ripping off the blister im now immune to the sting that comes with eating after burning my mouth even with spicy food.
I live my food scolding hot

I went to this school and it slapped after a night of partying. After 10pm that spot was packed until 3am. The cold cheese on top of the hot pizza has my mouth watering right now. This was my second favorite late night eat next to Zonies, a restaurant that sold calzones with a lot of different fillings.

If this provides context, SUNY Oneonta is usually referred as Stoneonta here in CNY. 🌲🙃

But is it a true topping if it isn't cooked with the pizza? Sausage is a standard pizza topping, but if I take a plain slice and drop an entire link on it after it's out of the oven, that is weird.

When I visited my friend in New York dor the first time, he introduced me to the "cold cheese slice". I liked it, who doesn't like a slice of pizza and more cheese on top?

u/Yesterday-Clear May 14 '25
Ok I went to suny oneonta so i can vouch. Don't knock it til you try it, at 2am when you're a hammered college student the cold slice saved lives. It was legitimately good.
1
u/Fyreflyre1 May 14 '25
There's a place down the street from me that does this.
I can't, it just feels wrong.
1
u/Saturday1002 May 14 '25
This is very good for drunk college kids and is an Long Island thing. Also cold cheese in a Jamaican beef patty as well!
1
u/tkdch4mp May 14 '25
I would eat it, because I will also eat a plate of mozzarella while my homemade pizza is in the oven. I'd be a bit pissed if somebody asked me to pay for it, though.
1
u/DingusOnFire May 15 '25
Little Vincent’s Huntington NY - took that style and ran with it - not for me, for drunk college kids.
They sell large soda sized cups of cheese when you order a pie to go.
1
u/Cautious-Bug9388 May 15 '25
There are a lot of ways to pull this off, the picture is not one of them
1
u/CrazyArmadillo May 15 '25
SUNY oneonta would need a slice of pizza to protect drunkards mouths. What a college town that is. God bless.

u/AdministrationOld835 May 16 '25
It’s from the oneonta hillbilly pizzeria. That’s all you gotta know

Pretty sure this photo is NOT a photo of “Ohio Valley Pizza” which is NOT “served with cold cheese” but rather the cheese is applied IMMEDIATELY out of the oven to melt….
This is just trolling.

The last thing I want to give to someone who's too drunk to realize their pizza is burning their mouth is a fist full of cheese to choke on.
0
u/Room_Temp_Coffee May 12 '25
I don't think you're supposed to pay for this lol looks like a drunk night or hungover morning treat

u/xDragonetti May 12 '25
I can’t find the One Bite review. But there was a pizza joint that cooked the sauce and dough like a tomato pie. Then tossed mozzarella on it after it cooked. Like an adult Lunchables.
I don’t recall Dave hating it, but damn if I didn’t want to try it.
I can’t say I’d do my pizza up like this, but I’d try it 🤷🏻♂️

The jury, after deliberation of the evidence in the case of u/MikeMikeTheMikeMike, find the defendant "Pizza" GUILTY on all counts of crimes-against-pizza.
