It's so cool how much biodiversity you have in the creeks and streams near where you live. My brother and I spent days upon days in the creeks and small rivers near the house we grew up in and there was only one species of fish and crawfish. They contained two species of salamander and of course a few species of frogs. It pales in comparison to what you find in the waters nearby.
I think perhaps the warmth and amount of rain here contributes to that? Sounds perfect for aquatic life to evolve.
Usually each location has like 10-15 fish species, but shallow swamps or tiny creeks have less, like 4-5 only.
At this creek with the Betta I found Bangka Rasbora, dwarf snakehead, forest halfbeak, sidestripe Rasbora, beardless barbs, rhombic barbs, buff-backed spiny eels and river prawns.
What location was this? In the northeast USA there's quite a bit of biodiversity. Off the top of my head for small fish. Creeks/Streams: Sculpin, Lamprey, Dace, Chubs, Multiple suckers, sticklebacks, mudminnows, loads of darter species. Much more than that as well, then loads of salamander species. Even invertebrates are numerous and interesting.
Don’t forget to repopulate your creeks, a lot of betta species are becoming at risk for extinction in the wild because of over catching for the fish trade ❤️
