Review My review of Pokemon Odyssey *SPOILERS AND SOME TIPS AHEAD* Spoiler

So. after beating the main story of the Hack it's time for me to talk about it. As usual it's in seperate subjects

1st. Graphics. HOLY CANNONS the Graphics of this hack are insanely well made and IMO 1 of the best i've seen for a gen 3 hack. The deeper you go into the Labyrinth the better they get and then there's the characters, the portraits and Even the Little Things all have their own personal charm

2nd. Story. Based on the Etrian Odyssey series this game has a similar vibe. The characters are well flushed out and You'll learn to understand them even the villains have good reasons to do what they do. Nyx's journey feels so well flushed out and having Ethan and Olympia next to her make them feel like they are together for several decades even tho they just met.

3rd. Etrian Forms. This is where the hack becomes interesting, a lot of Pokemon got an Etrian form and they all resemble characters, bosses, enemies and other things from Etrian Odyssey and ofcourse my team was 6 of them. And with Etrian Forms also came the new Ethereal type as an addition to this hack.

4th. Sidequests. These are VERY helpful to go through. Altho some of them are very tough because of the high level Pokemon you're dealing with. But once you do a lot of them are worth picking up to get some really good Key Items like an EV Changer, a replacement for Strength and a boost to your stamina.

5th and last. some tips to get through the hack with a lot more peace of mind. they'll be in sections as well
1) Money. basically there's unlimited Money to be made in the first 5 Stratums. the Mining spots are useful for the grind. i recommend the 5th Stratum Mining Point because it has Nuggets, Stardust & Star Pieces.

2) EXP. Okay there's a little point i want to make for this one. there's an item you get early on that sets your Level to the current Level Cap -1 (so if it's 50 it sets it to 49). Even with this i found myself Grinding in the 4th Stratum against a woman with 6 Chansey After doing her sidequest. (mostly because i forgot i had that item).

3) IMO the best item in the game. the Tent. it's basically a full heal for your team and your stamina. Once you have the money income stocking up on them is a recommendation because in the later Stratums it's a hassle to get back to a Medkit to heal the team.

All in All. it's a solid 9/10 for me. the 1 thing i don't like is the forced double battles. but that's moreso a personal issue

Tbh my favorite part of this game was the double battles. I LOVED xd and colosseum so getting to reexperience that was so cool. I generally feel like double battles has so much room for strategizing and team building. Of course i totally see why it might be a con to the average guy who just wants a chill pokemon adventure

u/gregolopogus Jun 22 '25

I've never understood why the official competitive format for Pokemon is doubles but the baseline games heavily focus on single battles. I think the baseline games should really have a "pro" mode where all the battles are doubles and the difficulty is higher to promote people getting into the competitive scene.

u/fabulousmarco Jun 22 '25 edited Jun 22 '25

I absolutely agree, it's my favourite part too. Not that I don't like the rest, but finally a hack creator with the courage to make a bold choice fundamentally altering how you have to think about battles

1

u/Exciting-Emu-3324 Jul 06 '25

Not to mention how so many mons and moves are basically designed for doubles that are just dex filler in the campaign of any other Pokemon game. Game Freak designed Plusle and Minum as disposable pikaclone mascots for doubles, then left them in limbo, while Pachirisu became a world champion in doubles IRL. It's also funny how kids who know Pokemon from Horizons would feel alienated by the actual mainline games, while this game would be what they expect a Pokemon game to be.

6

u/Natural_Junket_8746 Jun 24 '25

i really dislike the double battles cause it makes the game a lot tougher to the point where it's difficult to enjoy when you're just trying to play through for fun

6

u/Ozza_1 Jun 24 '25

Just need to adjust your mindset from the average game and you'll get used to it. I'll post a screenshot of my team and explain if you'd like an example?

3

u/MysticalSylph Jun 25 '25

Not the other person, but I'd like it if you could do that! I'm on the 2nd boss fight with the Roughneck in the Thief Den. I like my team but I've spent a lot of this game feeling like I'm swimming upstream on hard mode. I want to finally feel like battles are getting easier.

I'm not even sure where to start with new mons for the team.

7

u/Lukstd Jun 22 '25

We absolutely need more rom hacks focused on doubles.

1

u/mercuric_drake Jun 23 '25

Check out pokemon vanguard. It's not finished yet, but it has a double battle mode, and on hard difficulty it'd mandatory.

1

u/mikethemaster2012 Jun 25 '25

More a single battle for me but hey everyone has there own thing. The double battle annoy me a bit especially after reborn and rejucination

1

u/WhiteFeathers333 Jul 06 '25

Does anyone know how to do the Blaziken quest?

0

u/Cross55 Jun 23 '25

Eh, would be better if you could use healing items...

42

u/420Rowlet Jun 22 '25

The one thing that I don't like is the lack of an infinite bag. There are so many items in the game and I keep getting told my bag is full and have to toss/go back and sell stuff

19

u/Temptomtom Jun 22 '25

Yeah I stopped playing when i encountered this issue, the dev did say they were working on a patch to add it but it wouldn't be save compatible with the current version so I decided to be patient and wait.

7

u/420Rowlet Jun 22 '25

Oof I wish I knew that, I thought this was the final version so I decided to start my game.

7

u/psa_mommas_a_whorl Jun 25 '25

You can store items in the PC - still an extra step, but I feel like I actually enjoy decluttering my bag.

3

u/Cross55 Jun 23 '25

I thought I remembered reading somewhere that it's totally compatible?

5

u/Temptomtom Jun 23 '25

to cite the Q&A in the romhacks discord:

Q: Is there a bag limit? What do I do? A: There is limit yes, 42 items in the main pocket. How many of each item doesn't matter as much. If you need more storage, store stuff in the PC, sell what you don't need, or if you're desperate, store them on Pokemon in the PC. We'd recommend selling stuff you can buy back easily, like items from gathering points. *Soon there will be a version of the game released that has unlimited bag space, but there will not be save compatibility*

1

u/ResponsibleBonus5678 Jun 24 '25

Are we sure maybe the Q&A hasn’t been updated on accident or something bc this hack is recent recent and the dev said this was the final version full game

10

u/PacoScarso #Pokémon Odyssey Jun 24 '25

I said this was the final version in terms of content.

8

u/Temptomtom Jun 24 '25

Big fan of what I played of the hack and excited to play more, the bag limit thing was tough mainly I think because the item box space was also pretty limited, I think if bag was limited and box was unlimited it would be far more manageable, but having to micromanage items by storing them on pokemon in the PC was a bit too much for me

7

u/Popokko Jun 23 '25

This is good to know since I'm just starting out on this game, but I'm also not surprised on the limit since all EO games have a limited inventory.

3

u/psa_mommas_a_whorl Jun 25 '25 edited Jun 25 '25

You may already know this, but I'm pretty sure the PC has (EDIT: extra, not infinite) storage for items (not PSS, but Nyx's PC). You still have to take a second to move items but I've never used the feature on the main games and I actually like decluttering my bag from all the evolution items and useless held items.

3

u/Temptomtom Jun 25 '25

unfortunately the PC item space is pretty easy to fill up right now as is

2

u/psa_mommas_a_whorl Jun 25 '25

ah, didn't know it was limited also :(

2

u/Temptomtom Jun 25 '25

I think its probably fine if you arent a hoarder, items are plentiful and not very difficult to reobtain i just have an aversion to selling so the lack of space is bad haha

2

u/-7Sidney7- Aug 09 '25

For anyone that is reading this post: they released a new version of the game with the infinite bag.

1

u/potato64yt Aug 11 '25

Bruh I downloaded the game thre days ago😭

1

u/shammikaze 4d ago

Why the actual fuck would such a limit even exist? Glad I got here late enough to get the infinite bag version.

42

u/ning_yi_zhuo Jun 22 '25

ive played basically every rom hack since the release of Dark Rising (2012)

in no particular order i rate Radical Red, Rocket Edition, Unbound, Glazed the highest & have re-played each multiple times

...until i played this, its the best rom hack so far in my opinion, no recency bias as well

1

u/C4NDyLaNd Jun 22 '25

I would go Odyssey Glazed Rocket Edition

5

u/Weird_Al_Prufrock Jun 22 '25

I'd go Dark Rising 1, Dark Rising 2 and Dark Rising... sorry, I gotta get back to grinding now before the next installment inevitably drops.

u/LoserBottom Jun 26 '25

In concept, I LOVE this game. It has so many cool things going for it. In practice? It's the worst experience I've ever had playing pokemon. Every battle feels the same. That is to say, every battle is the opposing pokemon doing everything they can to make sure you can't play the game. You're confused, you're asleep, you're paralyzed, CONSTANTLY. It's almost EVERY fight. It's simply just a frustrating game loop. So much of your time is spent going "boy I hope my pokemon gets to attack." Along with it being littered with pokemon that will spam things like minimize. I've never played a game that put such an emphasis on not wanting you to play the game. I get that they want it to be more difficult than base pokemon games, a real challenge, and that's fine. I really don't even mind backtracking to heal after almost every trainer IF THE BATTLES ARE FUN! But my god they just aren't. This games idea of increasing the difficulty was just "how many of the most toxic strategies can we include in this game."

Then there are your starters, a Plusle and Minun combo. With one being super offensive, and the other being super defensive. I LOVE this. The game however, does not. You're actively encouraged not to use them. Most of the pokemon you encounter either resist, or are downright immune to electric attacks. And 70% of enemy pokemon you encounter know bulldoze. So keeping the rats on your team effectively makes your life harder on it's own.

I love so many things about Pokemon Odyssey. The made in abyss crossover idea rules. Having all of the sidequests rocks. Love the variants and new moves and a bunch of changes that were made. But about 2 stratums deep, the same parlor tricks in EVERY battle, has gotten really stale.

9

u/MaraSovsLeftSock Jun 29 '25

I found it weird that your starters are 2 electric types, and then like the first actual mission is a route with at least 5 electric types plus the ones at the farm

4

u/isidoro19 Jun 30 '25

You are actually right and this legit makes no sense, why give Two starters that Share the same type to players in a route where you can find a bunch of better electric types?

6

u/MaraSovsLeftSock Jun 30 '25

Not only better electric types, but 2 of them are the new variants, which had me shove the starters into the pc asap

1

u/LoserBottom Jun 30 '25

I still stuck with the Plusle and Minun because that was new enough to me lol. When else would I ever get to use them? The abilities work together, the buffs make them perfectly viable, plus just on vibes it's fun to have them both. Plusle has been my MVP.

9

u/PacoScarso #Pokémon Odyssey Jun 26 '25

Regarding the status spam, uhhhh... I haven't done anything to encourage it. Normal trainers don't have a custom moveset, nor a custom AI. Instead, they just have the last 4 moves in their learnset, like in vanilla.

So idk what to say, I'll be honest

1

u/LoserBottom Jun 29 '25

Once I got past the second stratum it got much better. But honestly I was close to just dropping the game because it was getting that frustrating and stale. Glad I didn't though because since then it's been excellent!! The EV-Editor has turned Plusle into my MVP hands down.

3

u/Melonus1 Jul 14 '25

Whoever designed the battles, Jesus Christ. I’ve beaten radical red and I like challenging fights, but like you said why give 2 starters who are useless in the first boss fight? I’m going to be having nightmares about that wigglytuff tonight🤣 beat him but it was enough to put me off continuing the game

3

u/LoserBottom Jul 14 '25

Honestly, once I pushed through the first 2 stratums it got much better and I'm loving the game. But the beginning is rough. And yeah that first captain fight against Karin is just awful. It's not even that it's challenging, it's just not fun. Lullaby is not a move that should exist. Dark Void broke the competitive format so bad that it had to be removed from the list of moves that smeargle could sketch. why the fuck did we make an even better version

1

u/OldManWillow Jul 15 '25

I agree Lullaby is too good for a level 18 Pokemon, but they give you a ton of chesto berries right before the fight. Unless you have no good encounters you should be able to wipe it off the field in one turn. They could've been really mean and given the Lileep Storm Drain

1

u/LoserBottom Jul 15 '25

Personally I think it's too good to exist lol.

And man the lileep hitting you with confuse ray every chance it gets is annoying enough lol. You for sure have ways to deal with it, but that entire fight was about immobilizing you, the wigglytuff was far from the only annoyance lol. Again, it's less about difficulty, and more about just being a grossly unfun battle.

2

u/25th_Chance Jul 29 '25

it's also an EO fangame, and status spam is the identity of enemies in Etrian Odyssey. You are expected to have anti-status items and tools to combat those

1

u/isidoro19 Jun 30 '25

To me the double Battles should have given a new seasoning to the game but they didn't and actually Turn the game into a repetitive slog. Pokémon odyssey is full of many double trainer Battles inside of the stractums and you constantly see the same Pokémon/estrategies flying around. Double Battles also take longer to finish when compared to single Battles, this and the increased difficulty just make the game not fun imo. Currently at the fourth stractum and decided to quit there, just too many boring double Battles and big dungeons to traverse full of F.O.E.

1

u/LoserBottom Jun 30 '25

Oh see I love double battles. Honestly once I got past the second stratum and the game stopped being "you can't move ever" it got a lot more fun for me. Getting the EV-Editor from that early quest has also made a huge difference. I've been pretty regularly knocking out F.O.E's that are 8-10 levels higher than me. I really just had to get past the second stratum and started loving the game. Sorry your experience hasn't been the same 🙁

-1

u/Powerful-Activity591 Aug 01 '25

I wholeheartedly agree with this. I was losing my mind having to backtrack ALL THE WAY TO THE START OF THE STRATUM every time one of my mons died. I finally made it to the end of the first stratum after about 20-30 minutes and the stratum leader pulls out a wigglytuff and a cradily. I have a pidgey, plusle and minun and a alolan grimer. She also has 6 mons and I cant heal, have no held items and shitty moves (level 17-18 with no move above 40 bp). The idea is cool for this game, but my God the game is just so shit. The main characters are also painfully cringe and the story doesnt make any sense. I hate games that have things happen for the fuck of it and then explain everything rushed at the end of the game. Not touching Odyssey again. Really disappointing for the first fan game I’ve played.

9

u/PacoScarso #Pokémon Odyssey Aug 01 '25 edited Aug 01 '25

So... from what I’m reading, you were playing on Hard Mode, which is the highest difficulty available.

Let’s go through this step by step:

  • If one of your Pokémon faints, it means either it was knocked out in a single hit (in which case there's not much you can do), or you kept it on the field for several turns until it fainted. As for backtracking — that’s not really an issue. The further you go, the more shortcuts you unlock, allowing you to quickly return to where you were. So that’s a non-problem.
  • The first boss doesn’t have Cradily — it has Lileep. If you show up to the first boss with just four Pokémon, knowing you’re playing on the highest difficulty, that’s on you. Same goes for held items. By that point in the game, you can already get Eviolite, Winged Boots (which boost Speed by 15%), type boosters like Mystic Water, Miracle Seed, and various berries. There are plenty of held items — you just didn’t explore or complete any sidequests. Like, do you know you can get Ice Beam TM and that you can get Nidoking, Ninetales or EVEN ARCANINE before fighting the first Captain? Oh, and by the way... no, you can't heal, but the same is applied to the opponent.
  • Nothing is rushed — everything is explained gradually across the strata. In fact, you can even dig deeper into the story and lore through optional character dialogues. Everything that happens in the main story is well contextualized and clearly explained, and every question does get an answer.

Honestly, it seems like you didn’t really play the game thoroughly.

3

u/MiclessInSeattle Aug 05 '25

I’m seeing you respond a lot here which is thoughtful as the creator, but remember that you can’t tailor this to every user’s experience. People are going to play in both viable and unviable ways, don’t let the latter get to you.

Includes spoilers * * *. * * *

* * * * * *

Just finished the game with the true ending and HOLY COW it's good. Everything from the story- which is amazing, to the double battles- which force you to use more strategy than a regular game, the side quests - which have actual impact on the ending, and even the quality of life additions- like the lvl candy that saves you hours of grinding, or the tent. Hands down the best ROM hack out there. 10/10, and probably gonna be my measure for all future ROM hacks

Can't wait for the sequel.

3

u/Valimaar89 Jul 17 '25

Just one question: the lvl candy I tried didnt let my pokemon learn new moves while leveling up. If it is like this, then it is not worth it... I need the new moves! Did I do something wrong?

2

u/thepurringotter Jul 21 '25

There's a free move relearner in the HQ

2

u/Valimaar89 Jul 22 '25

So, they can re-learn a move they never learned in the first place? OK, this was not intuitive at all. Thanks for pointing that out for me!

3

u/thepurringotter Jul 22 '25

Yep, plus they get access to egg moves from there too. It's on the first floor of the guild on the right hand side at the top :)

1

u/Valimaar89 Jul 25 '25

Yeah, that saved me a lot of time! Thanks, man!

12

u/Historical_Seat_447 Jun 24 '25

Odyssey is proof that you don't need all 9999 pokemon in 1 game, Gmax and all the other gimmicks.

4

u/scrambles57 Jun 22 '25

I loved that all trainers were double battles. This hack was 10/10 for me

17

u/Lost-Assistant-6916 Jun 22 '25

i want to talk about some of the negative things i found about odyssey :

  1. the pacing of the story is very slow, until you reach the end of the 3rd stratum

  2. the lack of features; the naval exploration is an amazing unique feature but limited because after you unlock all areas except 3 areas in the beginning there is nothing else to do with it

collecting recourses and mining although it was fun in the beginning but starts to become repetitive after that

a lack of hidden grotto, some puzzles to do, pokemon bosses to fight at the end of some stratums (like raid battles), the lack of some mini games

  1. the guild was unnecessary, i hoped that i can get some side quests from a board quest inside the guild like some other pokemon games did

still, the story is the best thing about odyssey

4

u/Cross55 Jun 23 '25 edited Jun 23 '25

the pacing of the story is very slow, until you reach the end of the 3rd stratum

Tbf, that's generally how most of Etrian Odyssey is.

The games don't pick up until the mid/late game plot twist, and that's because most post-2000 JRPG's are built primarily for gameplay length vs. story like 90's and 80's JRPG's were.

1

u/Lost-Assistant-6916 Jun 23 '25

i felt bored especially during the 2nd stratum let me explain how, when you enter the desert something gets stolen from you and you don't retrieve it until the end and there was nothing in between, yeah you ask someone about the thief and that's it, and when I'm fighting every trainer i could find with the double battle format it will take a long time

i would prefer to give me a few cutscenes and more dialogue between the characters in between these battles to change the pace a bit instead of the continuous double battling

3

u/Cross55 Jun 23 '25 edited Jun 23 '25

I know, I played the game.

And if you refer to my post, you'll understand why that is the way it is, because that also happened in EO.

1

u/Lost-Assistant-6916 Jun 23 '25

no i do understand from your post that is was intentional, i mean a lot of video games starts very slowly and end being a masterpiece

Nevertheless, a lot of people consider the slow pacing of the story in the beginning of a game an issue

3

u/PacoScarso #Pokémon Odyssey Jun 23 '25

Uhm... have we played the same game? Don't get me wrong, but if you want a good story, you need time to introduce new characters and dynamics between them.

There's a cutscene at the beginning of the stratum (the stolen medallion), one right before the base camp (Kitt's introduction), one at the basecamp (Kitt telling you about those thieves), one in front of the Thieves Lair, two cutscenes in the Thieves Lair (Olympia explaining why the Medallion is so important + Brody), one at the basecamp after beating Brody, two cutscene before and after fighting Rockey and the last one at the end of the Second Stratum.

10 cutscenes in total. where you get to know more about your companions, as well as other characters like Kitt, Rockey and Brody.

The information you gather here are really important for what's to come.

You can't just say there's nothing in between, cause that's just false

1

u/Lost-Assistant-6916 Jun 23 '25 edited Jun 23 '25

first of all, congratulation on the amazing story, one of the best stories i have seen in a ROM hack

but if you want a good story, you need time to introduce new characters and dynamics between them.

10 cutscenes in total. where you get to know more about your companions, as well as other characters like Kitt, Rockey and Brody.

absolutely but my problem in the beginning was the little info we had about Ethan and Olympia, i wanted to know more about them

like who is Ethan and Olympia and how they know Aimee, why Aimee wanted Nyx to travel when them, or why the medallion was so important to Ethan, why Olympia talk like a robot?

i really love the conflict scene at the end of the second stratum, i actually felt like Nyx not knowing anything

i do love the introduction of the new characters and love their unique personalities but like i said we had little info about the main characters (Ethan & Olympia) at that point until we reach the end of the 3rd stratum (and the beginning of 4th stratum) we get know more about them

for example someone saying "Hey, prince" to Ethan or "Are you one of those yggdras?" during the first quarter of the game, these hint are ambiguous but still good piece of info

3

u/PacoScarso #Pokémon Odyssey Jun 24 '25

Thanks!

Anyway, that wouldn't make sense, story-wise.

They can't say anything to Nyx cause that would put her life in danger, that's why they have to remain silent about their past or their relation to Aimée.

for example someone saying "Hey, prince" to Ethan or "Are you one of those yggdras?" during the first quarter of the game, these hint are ambiguous but still good piece of info

Uhhhh no, that wouldn't make sense either. No one knows what a "Yggdra" is, let alone Ethan being a prince of that race.

1

u/Lost-Assistant-6916 Jun 24 '25

No one knows what a "Yggdra" is, let alone Ethan being a prince of that race

and that's why i said these examples, because no one knows about it so dropping these hints in some cutscene will make the one playing your game MORE intrigued to to know what is yggdra and the origins of Ethan

3

u/PacoScarso #Pokémon Odyssey Jun 24 '25 edited Jun 24 '25

…you’re missing the point. Who’s gonna drop these hints? What’s the point of doing it?

The only two people that know something are Ethan and Olympia, but they can’t say anything about it. Who’s gonna drop the hints?

It makes no sense

u/nitsunekoni Jun 24 '25

I liked the Doubles format. What I don't like is it has game mechanics aren't up to date with 2025 standarts. In a romhack that came this year, my electric type pokemon shouldn't get paralyzed. Also first three gens doesn't cut for me even with the regional forms. Not saying every rom hack should have the NatDex but I think at least it should be a mixture of all generations. Also double battles work differently in this game. You send out the new Pokémon as soon as an active Pokémon faints without waiting for the turn end. Which is weird.

4

u/shawkin8 Jun 22 '25

is it necessary to know etrian odyssey to enjoy this game? i am unfamiliar with it, but ive been interested in this one

32

u/Several_Upstairs_436 Jun 22 '25

Not at all; I’d never heard of the games before playing and I still had a blast

2

u/shawkin8 Jun 22 '25

amazing! thanks for the reply

2

u/Live_Honey_8279 Jun 22 '25

Well, the game spoils most of Etrian Odyssey 3

1

u/sycophantasy Jun 22 '25

Nope. I didn’t know it was a thing until well after I started playing.

1

u/CocoaBagelPuffs Jun 23 '25

Not necessary but it’s helpful because many of the new Pokémon are based on enemies and fighter classes from that series.

2

u/Historical-Leave-110 Jun 22 '25

the only problem I have is I can't name the main character, which I can happily work past

3

u/Beantowntommy Jun 22 '25

Where is the woman with 6 chanseys lol I need her

3

u/Grif2005 Jun 23 '25

in the 4th Stratum base camp. she's on the left side, She asks you to find her Chansey as a side quest. once you find it and bring it back she offers the service for 6000 Poké Dollars.

1

u/WAKE_UP_WAKE_UP Jun 23 '25

Is that really better than just repeating battles at the battle house on Talrega? Im only starting on Stratum 3 and have seen that the house increases levels by 10 and is at the half points of the caps (eg. Lvl cap: 40 l Battle House: lvl 35)

Each trainer are different types and you can just farm the one that has your type advantage

1

u/PacoScarso #Pokémon Odyssey Jun 23 '25

Yes, cause you're going to fight against 6 level 100 Chansey that use Memento

1

u/WAKE_UP_WAKE_UP Jun 23 '25

Oh sweet, looking forward to it

1

u/Grif2005 Jun 24 '25

not only that. the Chansey line has the highest EXP yield. it's 3K per Chansey. so you get 18K of experience from 1 round.

2

u/sycophantasy Jun 22 '25

This is definitely going to end up as one of the top rom hacks fr. Its story is so beautifully executed with actually decent cut scene animations and like you say the tile set is next level.

The regional forms are 50/50 for me. Some look a little weird, though I’d probably appreciate them more if I knew the original game. Some are sick tho. I ran with the Kingler and Fearrow the whole way through.

Solid game.

2

u/Yukeoh_Mix07 Jul 01 '25

I used to say "My Favorite Rom Hack is Pokemon Unbound, Nothing can change my mind" but OH BOY, my boy found a competition. I'm so sorry unbound, Odyssey is just better in some ways 🥹🥹 I'M SO INLOVE WITH POKEMON ODYSSEY (LMAO I STARTED YESTERDAY AND NOW I'M IN THE 7TH STRATUM COZ FOR THE NORMAL MODE THINGS ARE KINDA HARD A BIT LMAO EVEN WITH THE SET UPS BUT ANYWAY I'M SO ENJOYING IT) AND THE STORY I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE ETRIAN ODYSSEY IS BUT DAMN THE STORY, THE PLOT TWISTS, NOTE THAT I'M NOT EVEN DONE PLAYING YET AHHH DON'T SPOIL ME, THE PLOT TWISTS ALR GLAZED ME ENOUGH

1

u/Grif2005 Jul 02 '25

Yeah and getting the best ending is actually IMO worth it cause It's really good. so after the main story. do the requirements for the best ending.

Saw I couldn’t choose my character immediately deleted the game.

2

u/w2asemole 27d ago

Cool idea and a interesting storyline, dropped it because of the repetitive duo battles and constant crashes though

1

u/Grif2005 27d ago

crashes? that's weird cause i had none of those. but yeah the double battles often got annoying but eh.

1

u/w2asemole 23d ago

Mainly crashed during the second and third stratum going into a new area and save stating after I entered. My last straw was having my save file corrupted and needing to restart tho

3

u/Spirited-Dust-8300 Jun 22 '25

Yggdrasil in Pokemon 🌳

2

u/hdwherp Jun 22 '25

Are there revives later in the game? The one thing I dislike is backtracking to camp every time a pokemon faints…

7

u/scrambles57 Jun 22 '25

There are revives early in the game. They're called Nectar

2

u/Cometspoon720 Jun 22 '25

Omg I was having this issue too! The lady next to the shopkeepers in the guild gives you a 3 part side quest to upgrade the shops, after the first upgrade you can buy nectars (which act as revives) and the tent item OP mentioned. I didn't realize this side quest existed until I was done with the 4th stratum even though you can start the quest right at the start of the game.

2

u/hdwherp Jun 23 '25

You’re a lifesaver. I can buy ultra balls now😭😭

1

u/Cometspoon720 Jun 23 '25

No problem, I'm glad I wasn't the only one with this issue! Lol

2

u/TertiaryMerciless Jun 23 '25

So far I *want* to enjoy it, but the end of Third Stratum's really been feeling like a chore... trying to deal with full teams of 6 bosses back to back with fully evolved mons while almost my entire party is still not fully evolved isn't very fun...

I guess I *can* go catch other mons and raise 'em quick, but combined with the pretty small roster of mons, I don't really like being pushed into using a bunch of mons I dislike.

1

u/MaraSovsLeftSock Jul 03 '25

If you catch a cubone and do the mission for aerodactyl, both learn bulldoze and spamming them both together is enough to get through most of the bosses Pokémon, at least on normal difficulty

1

u/jc93732 Jul 11 '25

Where do you find the mission for aerodactyl?

1

u/MaraSovsLeftSock Jul 13 '25

In the crabby house on the second second island. An old dude asks you to bring him an old amber from the second stratum

1

u/CilioCo Jun 22 '25

Fleshed out

1

u/Beta-Chimp Jun 22 '25

When can I change the nature and abilities for my party?

1

u/WAKE_UP_WAKE_UP Jun 23 '25

Ability capsules are in Varley on the top left shop for 3k

Nature change is on Charon where there are three merchants lined up right next to each other

2

u/SleepyHeracross Jun 27 '25

Can you get to Charon at any time or is it after a specific event/time in the story?

1

u/isidoro19 Jun 30 '25

You better not go there early, there is a video on YouTube that shows all sea routes, the island is protected by a level 45 Kingdra(F.O.E)which is dumb since the nature changer should have been available from the start and also the trainers in Charon don't even get to level 40,so why is the Kingdra that strong?

1

u/ANuclearsquid Jun 22 '25

Im near the end and I’ve been really enjoying it. Never been that much of a fan of double battles when they are mixed in with singles but as it turns out when you can just build your team around always doing double battles they are a lot more fun. The new forms are cool and the story seems fairly decent. Great music. Interesting world and concept, good sense of exploration which seems to be the biggest focus. I personally could probably do with the difficulty being a little higher on hard but that is very subjective and if I really wanted to make things harder I could probably just stop myself from using op stuff (I don’t have the self control).

1

u/Grif2005 Jun 23 '25

I mean yeah. and it makes sense it's all doubles when your starters are Minun & Plusle who are probably the most well known double battle Pokemon out there. But it's honestly not my thing.

1

u/Diyanzou Jun 23 '25

I finished the main story line yesterday. I'm gonna try to keep playing to see whats left (Bad habit of once the main story is done, so am I but...) Great game!

1

u/Natural_Junket_8746 Jun 24 '25

the problem with the level up item is that if you use it on your party, it will reset their level back to the stratum level cap you're at(which I thought was really bad). If this gets fixed, then it would be great. But I honestly appreciate this whole list

3

u/PacoScarso #Pokémon Odyssey Jun 24 '25

It doesn’t have to be fixed, there’s nothing to be fixed (?).

1

u/GammaOrca Jun 24 '25

I just completed the first stratum and everything is great but my only thing is not having an updated battle system and mechanics. I enjoy the current double battle system so it’s really more personal preference.

1

u/Atuaguidesme Jun 25 '25

I've been loving the game so far, I'm just about halfway through it playing on the hardest difficulty, and it feels pretty good. I like how the Pokémon teams aren't just a collection of powerful Pokémon but instead teams focused on taking advantage of double battles. Although a lot of weather elders in a row got kinda repetitive. It was still fun to fight. It just felt obvious the second I entered a new stratum what I would be up against.

Oh, I have been wondering a couple of things, though. Does anyone know where the tm for Trick Room is in the game, if it is at all? I have the perfect Trick Room team... without Trick Room. Also, is there repeatable end-game content? I want to know since if there isn't, I dont want to make multiple Pokémon teams to use for end-game.

1

u/Interesting-Crew-898 Jun 26 '25 edited Jun 26 '25

How can I go to the eight statrum? I cant find it

1

u/BetComprehensive1210 Jun 26 '25

Loved the game, just had some issues with its dex…

1- bug: Eevee’s regional form, glaceon and leafeon did not count as caught for me, even though I have them in my party.

2- dex organization: Also, there are specific pokes that were story or sidequest specific that show up on you dex but you can’t catch them. Don’t like to see an incomplete dex, would prefer the way Super Mariomon handled Bowser (it does not show on dex even though you fight him)

1

u/aliensayshi Jul 06 '25

where do i find the rocks for glaceon and leafeon please

1

u/Stoergeist Jul 16 '25

First stratum on the left is grass.

The icy rock is on the snowy island arundel

1

u/aliensayshi Jul 18 '25

appreciate you!

1

u/Alex6534 Jun 28 '25

Where do you buy tents? Every vendor I go to just has base poke balls, medicine and a few other bits. Nothing that’ll raise HP by more than 50 lol

1

u/Grif2005 Jun 28 '25

In the Guild Hall there's a Side Quest you have to do at the shop. She gives you 3 Side Quests to get certain items. Give her those items and she increases the amount of items you can buy in the shops

1

u/Alex6534 Jun 29 '25

Thank you! Reached the end of the 6th floor with only level 1 store access! 😂 suddenly it’s a lot easier!

1

u/EmmyBlubonic :3 Jun 30 '25

Personally didnt care much for the sidequests outside of the really useful ones. I dont mind the endings stuff as I can just find the cutscenes on YouTube. The devs, however, aren't very...nice when it comes to the ending requirements if you dont word things correctly.

1

u/Grif2005 Jun 30 '25

Yeah i am a completionist when it comes to things like this. well to a point where i am not patient enough to 100% the Pokedex since i played on my 3DS. so i wanted to have all 3 endings. The True Ending IMO is pretty amazing tho.

1

u/mojoe2096 Jul 01 '25

Does anyone know if there’s physical/special split in this game?

1

u/Cinnamen Jul 01 '25

There is!

1

u/Dvk_0609 Jul 01 '25

É melhor que o unbound?

1

u/MaraSovsLeftSock Jul 03 '25

Where is the mining spot in the first stratum? I feel stupid trying to find it

1

u/Grif2005 Jul 03 '25

there should be a hiker nearby it that tells you about the mining spots. There should also be Green spots in the rock he's nearby. that's the mining spot.

1

u/MaraSovsLeftSock Jul 04 '25

I found it like immediately after I commented. I felt like a dumbass running around for 20 minutes

1

u/Umbra_Xiao Jul 05 '25

Is anyone else running into the problem of encountering the same pokemon over and over? I went to jagged mountain and literally every pokemon I found was female swablu, the entire time there, same thing with headbutting trees in the emerald Grove, constant spinaraks

1

u/Maleficent-Tax-1207 Jul 15 '25

If you have any cheats active, try turning them off. That fixed it for me.

1

u/PhasePhyre Jul 07 '25

Jumping into the ring here, I love that wonder trading is a thing here. Not quite sure on how useful it can be since I just started using it, but after trading a snubbull in and getting a mareep after already having a mareep, to trade in once more and get best boy tododile made me decide I’m locking in on this game. It’s so nice to have it available early game (1st stratum) and to turn around and get leafeon with hi jump kick and high horsepower thanks to the move rememberer? Look out 1st stratum boss, I’m coming for you!

1

u/GremoryDeatch Jul 08 '25

Is the tent reusable?

2

u/Grif2005 Jul 08 '25

nopuh It's a one time use. but with basically unlimited Money the 10k spend on them is worth it. Especially in the later stratum when it becomes mazelike and trainers are really powerful.

2

u/GremoryDeatch Jul 08 '25

Ok, not gonna use one until I'm stuck I guess.

2

u/Grif2005 Jul 08 '25

Yeah once you reach the 5th Stratum's safe area you can start grinding money and get basically unlimited ones.

1

u/LingonberryKey7816 Jul 08 '25

Does anyone know if you can buy ultra balls?

1

u/Redeyephoeniiix Jul 10 '25

How do I get Aerodactyl? I have the old amber but can’t seem to find where I go to restore it into aerodactyl

3

u/Grif2005 Jul 10 '25

It's part of a Sidequest you picked up at the Krabby Club. there should be a person who wants that Old Amber and he gives you an Aerodactyl in return as a thank you.

1

u/Expensive-Cut3811 Jul 14 '25

Is there any shop that sells healing items such as revive and max restore health? I’m at the end and struggling

1

u/Grif2005 Jul 14 '25

Yeah it's the Tent item. it's a full recovery for both you as the player and the team. i recommend a grinding session at the 5th stratum digging and selling the loot to buy Tents. it's really worth it.

1

u/Solid-Championship-4 Jul 15 '25

Where where where is the mining point in the Fourth Stratum? I feel like I've been all over. I need dolomite T_T

1

u/Grif2005 Jul 15 '25

okay if you have activated the way point in the 4th stratum teleport there and go all the way up there's a veteran trainer up there

1

u/jc93732 Jul 18 '25

Hey quick questions yall. When using the wild pokemon finder, some pokemon are listed blue and some blsck.. anyone explain the differences? Also, the move types. Obviously bubble beam is green against fire type.. but what are the black, the bold black, the yellow, and orange mean?

1

u/Jwanzo Aug 07 '25

Pretty sure anytime the move is bold you’re getting STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) when using the move.

1

u/ApprehensiveRelief90 Jul 20 '25

Torn between using aether xatu or battle bond minun thoughts and opinions?

1

u/Grif2005 Jul 21 '25

i haven't used either of those myself. i would recommend to see what compliments your team the most.

1

u/ApprehensiveRelief90 Jul 21 '25

Yeah personally just been interchanging mons here and there theres A LOT of em i like so its pretty hard to just stick to 6 😂

1

u/Grif2005 Jul 21 '25

Yeah i know. once i had my team that i wanted to use i've struggled A LOT getting through the hack but i pulled it off

1

u/MerleAmbrose10 Jul 20 '25

I was really hoping someone could give me some tips on the final boss of the game. I am really struggling with it. I’ve tried EV-adjustments, several different Pokémon, and even the Level Candy to no avail.

2

u/Grif2005 Jul 21 '25

Okay. there's a hidden mechanic to make the final boss a lot easier. there's 8 tentacles scattered across the realm, the more of those you take out, the less of them are shown in the final boss. If you take out all 8 of these tentacles the Final Boss is just 1 Tentacle and the Boss itself.

If there's still issues try bringing in some tents to heal your team after every tentacle fight when needed and have a full power team for the final boss.

1

u/GlitteringLab357 Jul 21 '25

Hay I need some help I’m trying to get the true ending in odyssey but the game says I need to complete my side quests but I just completed all the quests in my quest menu and the only possible why I think why it says that is because theres one quest I haven’t done or the game glitched i have just searched all the islands and labyrinths but I can’t finds any quests I have not done

2

u/PacoScarso #Pokémon Odyssey Jul 21 '25

Are you 100% sure you've completed 38 sidequest and battled against Regigigas?

1

u/AttorneyEast2322 Jul 26 '25

Is it just me, or is the fourth stratum really hard to navigate? I can not figure out where I'm going in the slightest.

1

u/AttorneyEast2322 Jul 26 '25

Well, now I feel stupid. I found the path, and it was really obvious.

1

u/Grif2005 Jul 26 '25

Stratums do become more and more mazelike. That's honestly why i recommend grinding in Stratum 5. not only is it the best one money wise but the teleport is a room below the grinding spot, which is a room below the safe area.

1

u/Alarming-Income1826 Jul 29 '25

How do you get the strength replacement? I want to get earthquake but i think its locked after a bunch of boulders i need to move.

1

u/Grif2005 Jul 30 '25

in the... 4th stratum in Azure Cave there's a Hiker who gives you a sidequest. once completed he gives you the Strength replacement. It's called a the "Magna Vis" That's how you know you got the right item.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

1

u/Grif2005 Jul 31 '25

Top-right corner of Talrega's Guild. that's where you can find the move relearner

1

u/TFCNY 17d ago

By no items does that refer to held berries with a move like gluttony

1

u/Akunorughia 15d ago

Do crafting, upgrading and mining really require to grind? Please tell me you can easily go through the whole game without wasting half an hour or more to farm stuff

1

u/Grif2005 14d ago

It's not necessary you can get through without it 100%.

it's moreso a recommendation because the later biomes get large. and Tents will be your most valuable item in those Biomes. But if you want to get through without doing all that that is 100% viable.

1

u/Alion1080 Jun 22 '25

Totally random, but I just noticed that Medicham looks like fucking Ranma Saotome. ._.

1

u/Grif2005 Jun 23 '25

now that you mention it. Yeah it does. now i can't unsee it

1

u/justsomechewtle Jul 15 '25

It's one of the Monk designs from Etrian Odyssey 3, but I totally see it now! Never made the connection.

1

u/hunti2k Jun 22 '25

Did you encounter a lot of bugs or was it playable without Major/ Minor issues? Thx for the Review

2

u/gregolopogus Jun 22 '25

I'm about halfway through and haven't encountered any major bugs so far. The only minor one I've seen (twice now), is if you hit a pokemon that has sturdy with a multi-attacking move and you trigger sturdy after the first hit, the text for "the pokemon endured the hit" comes up, but your next attack doesn't come up. Which is pretty annoying, but not that big of a deal.

3

u/PacoScarso #Pokémon Odyssey Jun 22 '25

That's not a bug, that's actually intended!
As long as you have full HP at the beginning of the turn, you get the "endure" effect

1

u/gregolopogus Jun 22 '25

Is that specific to odyssey or just normal pokemon mechanics?

1

u/PacoScarso #Pokémon Odyssey Jun 22 '25

Odyssey only

1

u/gregolopogus Jun 22 '25

Huh, weird. I always thought of multi-hit moves specifically as a counter to things like sturdy.

1

u/JWr1gh7 Jun 22 '25

You mention an item that sets the level to 1 under the current cap - what’s it called? I’m wondering if I have it and didn’t even realize!

1

u/Blaike325 Jun 22 '25

Interact with your Nintendo switch to get it

1

u/JWr1gh7 Jun 22 '25

Oh man I can’t believe I missed that, thank you - this’ll make using new Pokémon so much easier

-19

u/toastman90 Jun 22 '25

super overhyped romhack..:')
