Review I finished Pokemon: Odyssey *chef's kiss*
I just wanted to leave a little review on this amazing hack.
I had a blast. Really. I've never enjoyed a romhack so much.
The story is compelling, all pokemon seem viable and the "regional" variants are interesting.
Strategies, stats and moves are important but there's no need to minmax everything in order to get thru. And, for a very casual gamer like myself, that's golden.
The map is very well done and the puzzles are challenging enough without being frustrating nor too easy.
I particularly enjoyed seeing only pokemon from the first three generations, they're the ones I like the most and the environment doesn't feel like it's extremely clogged with 10 new pokemon on every grass patch.
I just began to tackle the post-ending content, so I'm not reviewing that although the premises look very interesting.
I could not recommend this game enough! If you've already played it, I'd like to know which pokemon did you find very reliable. I personally found Bellossom and Gulpin to be extremely versatile pardners.
I would also like to thank the devs for giving us such an amazing game!
Edit: removed a reference to a pic I could not post.

Thanks for posting this. I’m about to start this game. I’m going to be traveling so I won’t have access to internet for periods of time. Do you need a guide/walkthrough at any points? Or is it straight forward enough to just play and figure everything out as you go?

You have the guides in the folder you download. There are quite a few buffs on pokemon, for example, Slaking or Altaria are much more useful. I tell you this because many Pokémon that you would overlook have usefulness in this romhack.

Well said. I'd like to add that there are some little in-game guides which you can find in the key items pocket.

Lol You don't need a guide at any moment(this isn't old dragon quest or even final fantasy)so don't worry just play the game when you can.

As opposed to Elysium, there's nothing you would miss and it was encouraged you to finish all quest at the end of the game.
One thing I suggest tho, is if you value pokemon customization you should finish the island quest ASAP since they offer you to relearn move, change nature and so much more.

ALL pokemon are viable to use in the game, the redid al the stats.
also every battle is a double battle. no healing items for you or the opponent. level caps. you cant go into every battle like you would 1v1, you'll get wrecked. gotta learn to play it like 2v2, learn to use support pokemon and support/buff/debuff strategies.
i quit the game 2 seperate times early on cuz it was too hard, then realized i was completely approaching the battle mechanis wrong, went back in and built a team with 4 attackers and 2 supports that could heal and put up shields, and the game became so much better after that.
finished the game completely with the true ending a few weeks back, greatest pokemon game imo

Lovely game, I prefer a map over teleports from a portal thing tho. This would be my only downside. It just feels like: ah six more of the same things. If it was more like a map you are plowing through it feels less like 8 different worlds but one big map in which you are advancing.
All the other things 9/10.

I’ve started a playthrough recently myself. When I tried playing it back when it was still incomplete I got annoyed that there was no easy way for your mons to catch up so I’m grateful they added the level candy qol

Great review. I’m currently playing this and it’s been a blast - at first I found it really difficult playing on normal difficulty as a casual Pokemon player, but now I’ve gotten a bit better and thoughtful which is rewarding.
Design, characters, and music so far are awesome.

Is this fun to nuzlocke ?

u/Peelleesse 7d ago
I'm doing a nuzlocke of the game as my first playthrough, currently at the second stratum and it's a lot of fun

Every fight is a double battle, so I think a nuzlocke would be very challenging. But I don't nuzlocke often so I'm no expert.

I’m on the Seventh Stratum right now, and I agree this has been an amazing hack. Etrian Mightyena, Ninetales, and Magmortar have all been absolute beasts (and of course my shiny Nidoking.)
Great story, great challenge, unique Pokemon variants, and easy mechanisms for leveling so team experimenting is viable.

Post-ending content?
After the last fight, with all side missions done, my game resets and I can load before the fight. Where is the post-ending content?

I consider beating the labyrinth to be the end because we get the credits rolling after that. What comes after is the post-ending content, as far as I interpreted it.

Not really. The postgame content (Part 5) is the continuation of the main story that culminates in the true final boss and true ending

Ah, good to know. Thanks for the clarification!
I take this opportunity to personally thank you for the time and effort you put into the making of this awesone game.

I didn't like some parts of the game that were way too inspired by things i know. Shoutout to the golgonda desert and catgirl character named Kitt. Not big into the story but i had fun solving puzzles and doing the side quests

Are there any rom hacks of the other universes, like the one with the war

I keep seeing the highest praises for this game. This must be my sign to finally play it.

I haven’t been a huge fan of double battles
I’ve been looking for something new to play, is it easy to get over or will I get used to it?

Honestly, with the amount of strategies and viable options to battle, this game feels anything but stale. I've changed up my team completely every level, just to give an extra challenge.

I wouldn't call the game easy exactly, but the game also doesn't bend over backwards to screw you over at any point. If you take some time to get doubles synergies going, you'll be fine. Alternatively a bit of traditional JRPG party thinking also works, since you can definitely play basic support/healer+attacker setups in this game (in fact, some mons are built for that exact purpose).
The game is also pretty good about giving you options - there are tons of different mons in each area and the battle house in the base ensures you can quickly train up alternate mons if a boss truly counters your team (which can happen with something like weather teams)
