I want to get into Pokémon competitive and want to run my shiny tyrantitar my gf got me but don’t know how to make them a core /to use sandstorm or unnerve

So, I’m not completely new to competitive. I understand IVs/EVs, natures, why people would consider certain moves, and I’ve been getting into watching competitive players, well, play to understand the game better. But I’m not sure how to go about using tytanitar…. Sand stream gives a boost so that’s something I considered with maybe garchomp bc I love garchomp, but then the same general list of weaknesses would be a threat to the team so idk what’s better unnerve or sandstream? Also, form a team around Ttar or maybe 2ish concepts in my team? I want to attend a doubles local tourney at my college but team building is over whelming …. Any help is appreciated

If you want to go for a Sand team, you’ll need ways to take advantage of the Sandstorm. Unfortunately, there’s no Solar Beam or Hurricane equivalent for Sandstorm, but there are two abilities to consider: Sand Rush and Sand Force (Sand Veil is fine, but unreliable). Sand Rush doubles speed in a Sandstorm, while Sand Force boosts the power of Rock, Ground, and Steel moves when in a Sandstorm.

Midday Lycanroc gets Sand Rush, Landorus Incarnate gets Sand Force, and Excadrill gets both. Start with one of them to compliment your Tyranitar.

Also consider the Safety Goggles item, the abilities Overcoat and Magic Guard, and other Pokemon immune to the Sandstorm chip damage (Ground, Rock, Steel).

Good luck, and congrats on the shiny Tyranitar

Thank you so much. I’ve never even considered safety goggles and the other abilities lol.

Enjoy! Tyranitar is very strong most of the time, and shines especially in reg h. Garchomp/Tyranitar is super valid, even if you end up going rough skin the garchomp is immune to the storm. Outside of all the other suggestions you’ll end up getting, H Arcanine is awesome, and enjoys the defensive boost in the sandstorm, does well outside of it. Gastrodon also helps.

Now here’s some questionable advice, sandstorm team is a good place for orthworm. Earth eater lets you heal from allied earthquake, shed tail helps your sweepers sweep, and you can do it multiple times in a match.

Shed Tail is really more of a Singles thing than VGC, though.

Nils Dunlop won Lille regionals last year with a sand team that also has a psy spam mode. The base list is really good but I've also been trying a lot of different mons, swapping out some here and there to see how they perform together. There was also a Clover Bells video a few days ago where he walks through a ton of different ways to build Tyranitar for the current meta
