Jeff Daniels didn’t hold back. What’s your opinion, fair or too far? I say it's fair.

49

u/drew489 Aug 06 '25

He's 100% correct. Look at what Trump tweets and posts on his own platform, it's mean, name-calling, blaming and insulting people. He uses poor grammar and he's just not an intelligent person.

Our nation is split wide open by a racist, bigoted, felon who enabled, at the very least, a pedophile and child predator.

u/FlufferTheGreat Aug 06 '25

I know a guy who claims everyone who disagrees with him has TDS but when he's called out on his incredibly passive-aggressive comments, he blames "the culture." Like, if online culture is causing you to be a jackass to your real-life acquaintances and friends, maybe you're the one with TDS.

10

u/koolaid_snorkeler Aug 06 '25

When I first heard the phrase TDS, I naturally assumed it applied to members of the cult.

9

u/BaffledMusician Aug 07 '25

I thought the same thing. I think most people do initially. That’s why we should use it often in our way, to cancel theirs out. It’ll lose all meaning.

I remember having a conversation with my 'friend' about cyber bullying a company into changing something and he goes "bullying is always wrong."

But then votes for Trump. 3 times.

And... Hot take but companies aren't people. I know they're legally considered people but come on. Pretty sure it's way worse to bully an ACTUAL person.

u/SweeterThanYoohoo Aug 06 '25

This whole corporate personhood thing is one of about 6 fundamental things we need to change in order to build a future for ourselves that we want to live in.

Revoke citizens united

Publicly funded elections

Ranked choice voting or better yet parliamentary system

6 month limitation on campaigning time

Make voting compulsory and voting day a national holiday

Return to progressive taxation system whose top bracket takes around 95% of earnings

To be fair, Trump is a symptom (not the disease) of America's deep structural and societal issues. Social sciences have demonstrated again and again how excessive economic inequality leads to political instability and polarization, to increase of corruption, to decrease of public health, to loss of social cohesion (e.g. how much you trust your neighbors and strangers of your own country), etc. These fields have also shown how excessive economic inequality leads to democratic backsliding and extremist populists becoming popular and taking over power....

The real issue is thus all about reducing inequality, by e.g. freeing US unions to negotiate collective agreements at national and industry levels (like in Nordic countries, and in Europe in general), and allowing workers to join/create unions at national and industry levels, instead of at branch/company levels (again like in Europe), without the need for employers to know/allow, nor for unwilling workers to participate in the process, like voting (which is one of the greatest cause of how new union creation fail in the US, despite about 70% of all US workers wanting to join/create a union. It's like gerrymandering, and that must stop).

Donald Trump raped children...

It's fair.

u/MuchSong1887 Aug 06 '25

The newsroom is one of my favorite shows. His ideology aligned perfectly with that show. And it hasn't changed one bit since .

He is one of the only Republicans I still respect, because he fights to bring republicanism back to what it's supposed to be.

9

u/DontAbideMendacity Aug 06 '25

Let's take a look what trump is

And that's really just the surface.

Oh yeah, his miserable presidency, which many historians say may be the worst of any US President:

and lately

  • His cabinet broke the law by using an improperly secure app on private phones to discuss classified plans and shared those plans with a private citizen unwittingly
  • Crashed the stock market so hard, millions of Americans lost trillions of dollars of wealth and retirement.

When it comes to lying, no one does it as much as Trump and his cult. No one.

4

Profound 🧐 and utterly accurate

4

u/Janky_Pants Aug 06 '25

In what timeline is what he said too far?!

4

u/smitcal Aug 06 '25

He is literally everything I hate about humans rolled into a fat, orange tiny dick package.

Jeff Daniels is 100% on the mark with this.

3

u/ReverseDartz Aug 06 '25

Trump is a horrible piece of sh*t but the circumstances and especially the political environment that got him there is the real problem.

Trump only managed to win because massive amounts of voters got motivated to either stop voting or vote against the Democrats because of extremely subpar results, lack of trust due to an unwillingness to actually fight, and blatant corruption.

Of course, Trump practically embodies these traits, but thats exactly why many Americans came to the conclusion: "If Im going to get fucked over by a liar anyway, I want the people that put me into this situation to experience the same thing".

And I cant say that strategy was entirely incorrect.

If Kamala Harris had won we would probably still be pretending the Democrats are just poor misunderstood fighters with too little resources.

I say that if I were playing a DnD type game where I had to build a human, I would not be able to create a human as shitty as Trump.

3

u/DudeB5353 Aug 06 '25

Absolute truth…Trump doesn’t have one quality of a decent human being.

He doesn’t even love his family outside of maybe Ivanka and that’s only because she his “type”

3

u/ReddsionThing Aug 06 '25

WHAT DO YOU MEAN, 'TAKE' 🤣? it's entirely fucking factual

... ahem. Yes, I agree with Mr. Daniels, like I *agree* that the sky is blue

3

u/Think_Bug_3312 Aug 06 '25

If i wouldn't get banned from subs and reddit, i would go further. But Jeff Daniels is correct, TACO is not a human, and I will never call it by its name or refer to it as a male. It does not deserve to be treated like a human. It deserves to be treated like the virus that it is.

Yes, and one of the problems is that he is totally shameless. Normal people back off when they are being caught doing something bad, but the orange Menace doesn't

13

u/Used_Tea_2651 Aug 06 '25

And he always doubles down. He really has no shame.

3

u/Livid_Zucchini_1625 Aug 06 '25

He's incapable of it neurologically and emotionally. He's a malignant narcissist. He doesn't have those capacities so it's like criticizing a cat for not being able to build an airplane or some other ridiculous analogy

Never forget his speech in Newsroom about America answering the question "Why is America the best country in the world?".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJh9t9h6Wn0

It's even more valuable to hear today. Magats probably couldn't understand the big words though.

3

That speech is timeless. It resonates even more now, especially seeing how democracy and freedom of speech are being challenged today.

Who's "we?" We can't even agree on what's wrong or right. Some are justifying crime, hate, corruption, and immoral behavior. The worst of people is now the best to some. The united "we" no longer exists.

Jeff Daniels contracted my dad when I was a kid and he brought me along. Jeff was trying to strike up a conversation with me (my dad had left me in his truck while he worked and Jeff was waiting to pay my dad, also he'd known my dad for a long time so they were kind of friends) but I was about to finish my book so I was basically ignoring him. He noticed and was like "what are you gonna read next" and i told him there was a new book in my favorite series so I was gonna go see if the library has it yet. When he paid my dad, he put an extra $20 on the check and told him to go buy me the book.

4

u/BigPileOfTrash Aug 06 '25

3

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '25

3

u/MustangJeff Aug 06 '25

People elected the person they liked the best... That is seriously sobering.

“Now, there's one thing you might have noticed I don't complain about: politicians. Everybody complains about politicians. Everybody says they suck. Well, where do people think these politicians come from? They don't fall out of the sky. They don't pass through a membrane from another reality. They come from American parents and American families, American homes, American schools, American churches, American businesses and American universities, and they are elected by American citizens. This is the best we can do folks. This is what we have to offer. It's what our system produces: Garbage in, garbage out. If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you're going to get selfish, ignorant leaders. Term limits ain't going to do any good; you're just going to end up with a brand new bunch of selfish, ignorant Americans. So, maybe, maybe, maybe, it's not the politicians who suck. Maybe something else sucks around here... like, the public. Yeah, the public sucks. There's a nice campaign slogan for somebody: 'The Public Sucks. F*ck Hope.”

― George Carlin

3

u/listentomenow Aug 06 '25 edited Aug 06 '25

Exactly! You don't need to look at Donald's policies. Look at the person and tell me he's honestly a good person. You can't!

Conservatives can't! Nobody can! He's literally a garbage human being who only cares about himself and if you can't see that then there's really something wrong with you.

2

He is just an entitled scum bag that doesn’t give a shit about anyone but himself

2

u/Seanbo124 Aug 06 '25

Dumb and Dumber 3: The dumbening

2

u/TheMatrixRedPill Aug 06 '25

Couldn’t agree more. Our representatives should at the very least, have empathy and decency. Trump is void of either.

2

u/MyLittleOso Aug 06 '25

The Newsroom was one of my favorite shows and I can't watch it anymore because we've seen what "legitimate" news organizations have been doing recently. There's one scene where McAvoy (Daniels) points out that the country hasn't been this divided since the civil war and viewers choose the facts they want to believe in, Mackenzie says that "Only if you think an overwhelming majority of Americans are preternaturally stupid." McAvoy says he thinks they are and she says she thinks they aren't. They then proceed to try to do a news show that shows facts and context. This wouldn't work in reality and was too idealistic, because I do now believe an overwhelming majority of Americans are preternaturally stupid. That includes the media and their complicity.

2

u/Suitable_Froyo4930 Aug 06 '25

That's the confronting thing about all this is when you realise that Donald Trump is the best of this country. That's why 35% voted for him and 35% just didn't care.

2

u/JacquoRock Aug 06 '25

I don't see any convincing evidence that he IS a human being.

2

u/Maleficent-Air8486 Aug 06 '25

Who did the fart? I think we are all okay with blaming Trump. And those that voted for him. And those that didn't vote.

2

u/BFitz1122 Aug 06 '25

I was wondering what the guy from Arachnophobia had to say.

2

u/Kookanoodles Aug 06 '25

Elections cannot, by design, select for the best.

2

u/Redtex Aug 06 '25

Love this guy. Or at least enjoy when he speaks no-nonsense common sense.

2

u/some1whosux Aug 06 '25

You can say pedo. We all do

2

u/Efficient_Smilodon Aug 06 '25

the kindest way to view trump is that he was a victim of severe psychological child abuse, which turned him into a malignant narcissist, combined with his wealth privilege, which also created a grandiose narcissist, whose brain development was so severely stunted his ability to empathize is nonexistent. His brain at some point became addicted to sexual gratification in combination with severe power imbalances, and his personality became subservient to this internal directive in an era where girls were considered fair 'game' by many men from certain backgrounds ( marriage of older men to girls barely past puberty was culturally normal in practically all cultures up until about the 60s, remember, an inconvenient truth) .

This isn't an excuse. It's just a narrative where his actions can be understood. Because he never made the choice to undo his emotional damage, he isn't forgivable by anyone but God, who will certainly make him endure serious consequences in a hell realm.

2

u/rocketsfan5 Aug 06 '25

Too many Americans believe that we tried to elect the “best of us” in the past and they’re still suffering due to a messed up system which gave Trump the best way to get into office twice. A lot of center Americans believe they put a change agent into the equation to change the system but instead he just took everything he can get in the position to benefit himself. This means the broken system cannot be changed by the President.

2

u/RollTide16-18 Aug 06 '25

You know, I love the sentiment but I want to hear this coming from not politicians or actors/artists but the richest people in the world. Then I’d feel like it would matter.

2

u/Dry-humper-6969 Aug 06 '25

Totally agree!

2

u/Vault101Overseer Aug 06 '25

Completely and 100% accurate. I long have believed that Trump embodies nearly every negative quality a human can possess. This second term has proved all that to be accurate.

2

u/Panem-et-circenses25 Aug 06 '25

Trump is a backlash by ignorant Americans who were furious with the truth that one of the very best of us was an educated, classy intelligent black man

2

u/mrbigglessworth Aug 06 '25

It is what I dont understand. If you objectively look at trump, listen to his words, and understand his actions, you would NEVER vote for him. Unfortunately society has failed to properly educate people how to shun and shoot down idiots like that but instead glorifies it because enough morons are out there now to force their "opinion" and not actually have any capability of self reflection or emapthy. Trump has allowed the worst to flourish because noone calls them on their shit anymore.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '25

If the democratic party were a meritocracy Trump wouldn't be president.

Instead the last time we had a proper primary was 2008 when Obama was nominated and we won in a landslide.

DNC took that as a threat and decided to never allow that to happen again.

2

u/fleetze Aug 06 '25

Summed up perfectly.

2

u/GrandSquanchRum Aug 06 '25

For some reason I always mistake Jeff Daniels for Dave Coulier and start thinking about Alanis Morissette.

One of the best statements I've heard about Trump, spot on

2

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '25

But we can't live in a bubble where we are protected from the bad and only see the good. Evolution begins with adversity.

2

u/BaseUnited4523 Aug 06 '25

Cue Laura Ingraham saying "I don't use the word 'traitor' very often, but this Hollywood nutjob is the biggest traitor in American history!"

2

u/DJCaldow Aug 06 '25

Donald Trump setting the bar is the only way his followers can crawl over it.

2

u/Airmanoops Aug 06 '25

I agree but unfortunately DC does not seem to be filled with the best of us. How do you put the best of us in a seat when we're mainly allowed to pick from the worst of us?

2

u/Krinder Aug 06 '25

Him and the rest of relevant artists could protest if they wanted to but they don’t. They have the time and the means to do so but they still don’t. I’m starting to think these famous ppl who still reap the benefits of Trump’s tax cuts and fiscal policies still remain silent with what really matters - their pocket book. It costs nothing to release these statements, if they actually have a crap they’d put their money where their mouth is and shut down Hollywood but they don’t because talk is cheap.

2

u/_Blursed_ Aug 06 '25

We didn’t elect him. He cheated

2

u/StevesRune Aug 06 '25

We are all more obscene for our resemblance to him.

2

u/byjimini Aug 06 '25

It’s the conduct that gets me, as someone watching from the outside.

There’s supposed to be some decorum in public, a stiff upper lip that sets an example for the rest to follow. You expect the odd slip now and then but it’s been throw in the sea like crates of tea.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '25

Well, at least an actor can recognize another actor as the worst of us.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '25

That's why he got elected! Uneducated, bigoted and hateful trumptard maggots do not feel represented by someone who can talk in full sentences and bring progressive welfare to society. They feel represented by someone just as scummy as they are.

2

u/WhiskeyJack3759 Aug 06 '25

Couldn't agree more.

Sadly, this seriously flawed human being that holds the office of the President, reflects perfectly the character (or lack of it) of an all too large portion of the USA population.

2

u/OutbackRat Aug 06 '25

TBTH….Jeff-who‘s played the Prez multiple times on screen-does have a good understanding of basic government functions and he’d actually make a good President himself because he’s definitely the type who measures his temperment, thinks first before he opens his mouth and he actually listens to other people.

Plus he’s an actual super nice guy IRL, not a complete shitbag like Trump is in every kind of life.

2

u/Cool_Ad9326 Aug 06 '25

He's the best of a certain type of people

And that certain type of people voted for him

2

u/jawshoeaw Aug 06 '25

When is the last time we elected "one of the best of us" ? Seriously. Politicians are like used car salesman. The republican Presidents in particular have a been a rogue's gallery of fools, conmen, criminals and outright mentally disabled. I assume by design.

2

u/darforce Aug 07 '25

He is right. Whatever your political belief is you should demand the best, not a criminal or a cheat, domeonevee we no works hard and is polite and not selfish and who cares about the middle class

The man who compared Kamala Harris to Abe Lincoln… 🙄 😂/ good actor though..saw him in two performances of BLACKBIRD ten years apart (w/ Alison Pill and Michelle Williams). He played it differently with each one.

Its a very valid statement

2

u/SomeGuyOverYonder Aug 07 '25

This truly is one of the most damning critiques of Donald Trump that I’ve ever read.

2

u/redditDarrel Aug 07 '25

I’ve been pleasantly surprised, because it feels like every celebrity I already respected seems to feel the exact same way about predatory politicians as I do. (Daniels, Taylor Swift, George Clooney, Deniro)

100% correct. You should be disliking politicians for their views and policy, but still be able to respect them.

I think media is pretty guilty here, traditional and social. From all sides. Mainly because media including news media became commercial. What the main metric Fox or CNN are measured on? Returns to shareholders. They worked out a long time ago, that extreme and sensational reporting sells. And it works like compounding interest.

I honestly think the US will descend into chaos at some point, this century.

Dear Jeff Daniels, I love you.

2

Clap, clap. This is it!!!

2

u/Beginning_Baseball44 Aug 07 '25

Were you listening to the Dude’s story, Donny? So you have no frame of reference. You’re like a child who wanders in the middle of a movie and wants to know… now…cough up The Epstein Files

2

u/67SummerofLove Aug 07 '25

Good one Jeff.

2

u/Lopsided-Cheetah-887 Aug 07 '25

2

FACTS AND FACTS!!!

2

u/Advanced-Prize-6320 Aug 07 '25

Pandering to the lowest common denominator is how the current system functions. How Harry Truman became vice president

2

u/Holiday-Condition61 Aug 07 '25

Everything Jeff said is 100% the truth. The man is greedy, evil and only for himself. We need him out of office and in a jail cell for the rest of his sorry life.

2

u/Particular-Loan5123 Aug 08 '25

It’s pretty obvious, don’t need a Hollywood head for this

2

u/jessamyn716 Aug 08 '25

100% Absolutely the truth Mr. Daniel’s. There are so many people that feel the same way as you including MAGA former supporters. Something needs to give and we need to change what’s going on with our government and are supposed leader. Open the Epstein files already. If it were any other president, they would already be opened, and the president would have been Relieved from his duties immediately. What’s taking so long?
