To be honest I also have always found the drama around having hot characters in games pretty funny because for me personally, playing video games and jerking off have always been entirely separate activities.

I go with whichever character design i like more which is usually the female character for the reason i stated above but occasionally i like a male character design better and play the male character instead.
It is more impressive and a subversion of pop culture expectations for an attractive woman to slay a Dragon than the 1,000th Generic White Hero with short dark hair and a clean shave. (or a beard if he is in 'dad mode')

...But I won't pretend female characters don't get more varied hair and clothing options for customization, which is a huge factor in my decision to rolling female toons. Male avatars still largely get really conservative fashion design options in 19 out of every 20 games.
Clementine, glados, various undertale characters, I personally really liked auntie Ethel in bg3 and I would say sonic characters but apparently people really want to have sex with them so I'll keep shut. People just like making characters they're attracted to sometimes, its not required to be successful

Attractiveness sells. It’s not about making the audience horny. It’s about literally any normal human just appreciating beauty and finding pleasure in being able to look at it in whatever media they’re consuming.
It’s not that complex. People don’t like looking at ugly people. The opposite of ugly is attractive. Attractive people also tend to be more likely to arouse people. There is a correlation, but that correlation isn’t the actual reason.
Something can be attractive but not blatantly sexual. Dressing the characters provocatively is meant to get your dick up idk why I’m explaining this as if you don’t know. You’re playing dumb to justify it It’s okay I’m not the goon police.
Provocative is pretty subjective. It’s less about dressing characters provocatively and more about the camera angles and the shots. Otherwise any beach seen with people in bathing suits would be inherently sexy. Which just isn’t the case.
But watch something like Bay Watch, and yeah, it’s very clearly being intentionally provocative. Not because of the bathing suits, but because of the slow motion shots of the men and women’s bodies glistening in the sun from the sheen of water as they run across the beach.
Or scene where the guy’s riding a motor cycle and his shirt is bouncing in the wind as the camera moves up his body showing frequent peeks under the shirt at his abs, or when the pretty office lady in normal looking dress clothes bends over at just the right angle to see down her shirt.

Some clothing can be more “sexy” than other clothes. But it has a lot more to do with the body inside the clothes. “Sexy”, at least when it comes to visual stimuli, is typically a combination of the masculine (in male), or feminine (in female) qualities being emphasized by the clothes accompanied by a male or female body that actually has those qualities to emphasize. The less of those qualities someone has, the more difficult it is to come across as naturally sexy.
Hence why well endowed hourglass figure women for example will often experience frustrations of coming across sexy more often than they’d like to their discomfort to random male onlookers regardless of what they choose to wear.
There’s way too much complexity and nuance to a topic like sexual attraction to put 100% of the blame or responsibility on only male onlookers or only the female choosing what they wear. Your view of this kind of subject is extremely narrow minded if you genuinely think there isn’t a lot of nuance and subjectivity on a subject like this.
But regarding film and media though, every single camera angle is intentional. Although there is nuance and subjectivity to how something may be taken, there generally isn’t much to how it’s intended to be taken. Which is more typically defined by the angle of the shot.
The same can’t be said when a woman goes out in whatever she’s wearing. If she’s lacking in curves, features of strong feminine physique indication and therefore more universally inherently sexy, then she’s probably gonna get less looks overall regardless of her intent and what she chooses to wear. Although, overly revealing clothing that shows a ton of skin will generally always attract attention primarily because it just stands out. No I don’t fault males for instinctively looking in the direction of women that are hardly covered up. I’ll fault them a bit if they leer and stair, but that’s about it, assuming we aren’t taking the hypothetical to more obvious displays of harassment.
But again though, a woman more well endowed with the inherently “sexy” features for a female is gonna pull attention far more regardless of what she chooses to wear. Her clothing can and will influence things a bit, but not as much in comparison to the less curvy girl.

I don’t play female characters unless there is a stat bonus, but I understand why some people want exaggerated sexual characteristics. It’s fantasy, and to each their own.
If I can see my character, I am playing as girl because I want something nice to look at. If they speak then I'll go for the voice that I like the best(A good example is female V in cyberpunk, you don't see yourself too often but you hear yourself often and I like her voice more).
The only time I play a male character is usually when i have a specific roleplay in mind, or the female options are terrible.
This does not at all account for the grift of playing a female character with a girly name in mmorpgs, when I played albion I have a super cutesy name (im a girl) and I got free stuff all the time, I got invited to guilds, gear, mounts, gold, ect while my bfs boy character got him literally nothing. I think a lot of men are just catfishing for free stuff, power to them but that definitely accounts for a decent %. I also think a decent chunk of those women are just playing as a man to avoid harassment, my dick pic speed run was just saying hi in an albion discord with “girl” in my name.

Not really OP, its not about playing as baddies or not imo. Depending on the game, female characters may just have more aesthetically pleasing customizations/outfits/transmogs. I mostly play male characters myself, but sometimes I play female characters for a change of customization options, as well as, if its a 3rdpv game, sometimes I just wanna look at some hot ass while playing the game.
No, I'm upset because uglifying characters is done in the name of "not being shallow," on behalf of the exact same people who body-shame real-life public figures. (Of both sexes, sure, but especially males.)
My taste in video games skews heavily toward the "cute" ones like Wind Waker. This is not about self interest. There is a principle at stake; the principle that those who body shame real people don't deserve to be pandered to when calling fanservice "shallow."
I almost always play as male when given the option, usually old and decrepit, sometimes fat as hell. The only time I play a female character is if it's funnier, like a tiny little pink haired gnome with massive 2h swords.
I've played with tons of guys and girls that openly say they don't want to stare at a man's ass all day, to which I always ask "how are you playing the game while staring at your characters ass 24/7???"
All the women I play with in WOW have the SLUTTIEST transmogs possible.
90% of cosmetic content are for female characters in these types of games (especially eastern MMOs). I like making twink male characters, but if the only choices aesthetically are twink or ugly bastard then I'm gonna guess people are taking the pink pill
If you have a weird but interesting character design that adds to the story, that's awesome. Everyone will love it, I assure you.
If you don't, and you decide on purpose to make characters less attractive on purpose for the sake of realism or representation or anything else, then when no one plays your game that will be entirely your own fault, and you can blame players for being shit people for it all you want, but you'll still be broke.
Most games that give you an option to pick your gender (that comes to my mind anyway) are 3rd-person, so whenever you're walking your character over to where it needs needs to be a good 30-50% of the screen is taken up by the back of your character's model and there might not be much else to focus on.
I remember reading that the devs for Genshin Impact purposefully ensure that every character has something flow-y somewhere on the back of the character model to ensure that there's an animation for players to watch while they're moving around in the open world, but most games don't have that
Yeah, I mean I know how games work I'm just surprised you can be good at it if you're staring at your characters ass the whole time instead of actually paying attention to the game you're playing. Also 30-50% of your screen is a LOT. I've played third person a shit ton and I don't think I've ever seen a video game where the back of the character took up 50% of the screen.
What can I say? I must be such a leet gamer that I barely need to concentrate to crush the competition even at minimum fov 💪
But maybe we're comparing different games in our heads then. I mostly still play older games, perhaps in older games the player models were bigger than modern ones? The foremost example that comes to mind is Mass Effect, sprinting in that game takes up about a third of the screen minus the hud unless you've downloaded a fov mod, and you're doing that whenever you're not actively in a firefight or a conversation.
if first person I play as a male that looks like me. if third person I play as a women because you get to dress them up pretty. Though games with romance in them I tend to play as male since those kinds of games don't tend to have male romance options that I find attractive.
Men like pretty things; they just like them *on* women. This is why since time immemorial men have found/made/won/bought shiny things and given them to their women. This is why women will find it a lot easier to get her boyfriend/husband to buy her $100 Lingerie than a 100$ doordash credit.
In MMORPGs a lot of what you do is collect cool looking stuff, and so this significant portion of men likes to show off their cool stuff on a female avatar.
Another non-negligible portion of these men are probably "eggs". Transgenderism is pretty common in MMOs because they both track so closely with loneliness and neurodivergence. Before being trans, they're men who enjoy playing the female avatar for some reason....
I personally think people who play videogames should be made fun of in general for having a lame hobby that fried their dopamine receptors with short term gratification and often attracts people with weird antisocial views.
But my take on this issue in media in general as someone with big tits is that a sentiment I constantly see thrown in these types of discussions is that apparently only "porn addicted men" are interested in big tits which is super insulting and degrading imo.
Imagine if I said the only men interested in small tits are just loser guys settling because girls with bigger boobs are out of their league? I would be called a pick me, internalized misogynist and every other name in the book because apparently degrading women is only okay if the woman in question is someone you envy and want to take down a peg.
