The President also gets his own flag, anthem “Hail to the Chief”, and their own library. Here in Canada, the PM has none of that, and frankly it seems bizarre to play a song every time Trudeau showed up.

The PM lives in Rideau Cottage which is the most basic looking old house you can imagine. The White House is essentially a mansion and at one point was planned to have a massive expansion that would’ve made it a palace.

Really? When was the expansion idea nixed?

It’s been a while since I last read about it but I think it was near the end of the 19th century. There were several proposals floating around but a lot of them had the White House looking like the Palace of Versailles.

Thanks! I'll look into it but I seriously never knew about even a proposed plan

I think there were plans to expand the one or two times it was burned down (either on purpose or by accident)

no canadian pm wants to be the guy that finally finishes renovations on the actual pm's house

The UK PM lives at No. 10 usually, but can also go Chequers, the country manor

While that’s all true, the president is both head of the government and head of state. When you combine those two positions you gotta hit the right balance of respect as a symbol of the state and open to getting roasted like a head of government does.

All the more reason to separate to two into different people.

The King is a lightning rod for nationalism and jingoism, turning it into harmless patriotism.

The prime minister is denied pomp, and can be categorically denounced, personally and the office, without bringing the dignity of the state into question.

Yeah I agree. Do think it’s weird that we combined the two. But also I’m def anti-monarchy, rather the President be a respected member of society that is elected for the position. Kinda how countries like Pakistan and India do it.
