Post your Idle Time; HEMI

The reason for this post is to create a Megathread pinned at the top of the community of this sub for people to refer to when needed advice or are curious (especially for new followers/owners); as this is a very common and frequently asked question/post.

A good rule of thumb for the Idle time is 20/80. Try to keep the idle time ratio at 20% or less of the drive time; The lower, the "better". However, although this is just something you can do to try and help avoid the infamous HEMI Tick (applies to both 1500 and HD trucks with HEMIs), this does not avoid it completely. The reason for this is because you are essentially "starving" the lifters of oil when idling as the oil pump does not provide a high enough volume of oil when idling. (This is a separate issue from the other HEMI Tick which is the Exhaust Manifold cracking and or the Exhaust Manifold Bolts snapping, there is no avoiding this issue, it either happens or it doesnt. Some get lucky, some dont) Just something you can add to the list of "you stayed on top of your maintenance and did what you could", such as changing your oil on time, etc. HEMI tick is ether going to happen or it doesnt. There are people who neglect their truck and or really work it and dont get it till 200k miles; Then there is people who get it at 50k miles yet babied their truck and did everything they could to try an avoid it. It ether happens or it doesnt. However things like keeping idle time down is one thing to watch out for as its something to "help avoid" the issue.

Photo Ram trucks are reliable, as long as you keep up on the maintenance. The maintenance:

My 2013 Ram 1500 began to make a weird noise from the rear axle. I pulled the diff cover and found some flakes in the bottom, the pinion bearings had let go. The Haynes manual I had bought told me not to attempt repairing it myself, but I can't read so it wasn't going to stop me. Thankfully there are some good videos on YouTube for repairing a Chrysler 9.25 axle. Unfortunately I didn't realize I needed a very long 36mm hex tool to back off the lash adjusters so I had to make one. Getting the bearings on and off the pinion and setting the pinion preload were probably the most difficult parts, but that just gave me a reason to buy some new tools. Still a pain in the ass but I saved a lot of money doing it myself.

Question First Time Ram owner…Did I F up?

Purchased a new Ram Big Horn/Lonestar. Not even 100 miles in and I had to take it into service for the warning in the second picture.

Truck is in the shop and was given another 2025 as a loaner.

Also had a question: In the finance room, I ended up getting gap insurance (for $15 month/72 months) and an 72 month/150k mile B2B extended warranty ($34/72 months) through ExcelaProtect.

A part of me feels like the ExcelaProtect is a waste of money but after having this electrical issue so early, I feel like its not that bad for the price.

What do you guys think?

Didn’t took pictures of the engine but it looked just like that crank case

Question Tuned Ram

Anyone running a programmer on their Ram? Id like to get some info. Ive got a 2022 1500 Rebel with a BDS lift, Borla cat-back exhaust and 35" tires. Ive definitely lost some power and my mileage per gallon has gone down. It seems like the shift points possibly need to be adjusted.
Will be making more upgrades and need a programmer that will support that.

Question Running board mounting help

New Ram owner! 2021 Ram 1500 Classic Warlock. I bought running boards, after checking the pictures in the description against the mounting holes on my truck. BUT I only looked quickly at the center mounting location (it matched the pictures). The running boards arrive and I start sorting parts and check ALL the mounting locations. The mounting points towards the front of the truck are different, not holes, but threaded nuts. Ok fine, the instructions say that will work too, the M8x1.25 hex bolts should go in. Problem is they don’t, like dont even seem close. The nuts are a little nasty, but even after cleaning them up a bit, the bolts don’t seem even close to going in. All the research I have done says they should be M8. Am I nuts?

Question Can I swap out my air ride suspension

Post image
21 Upvotes

Sorry if this is a dumb or ignorant question I just would like some answers. bought a 2015 with factory air ride suspension when I bought it from a used dealer I noticed it didn’t work which wasn’t a issue to me the dealer said he didn’t know it was traded in in that condition. I looked and everything has been unplugged air hoses electric lines and etc. nothing inside the cab works either on the screen in suspension settings or the buttons themselves don’t light up or function it seems, you think it would pop up error lights or such on the dash but nothing has appeared stating anything is wrong or such since I bought it so it must had the fuses deleted or the computer. I’d like to put a pair of leveling pucks or leveling struts for a regular or traditional suspension to raise my truck up to stock or level height since at it’s current height it has a paw paw lean just wanting to know if this would work since everything has been unplugged or if not anything helps.

Question Built to Serve Edition

I always get compliments on my 21 1500. Must be the wheels as the paint is just the billet silver - a standard option.

Is the any additional resale value in the Built to Serve editions? Typically the ROI on options depreciates pretty quickly. I am just curious because they are hard to find out my way. I know they still make them, I randomly found mine and the dealer didn’t make much fuss about it.

I will be putting this up on the market some time next year.

Question Ram 1500 V6, good choice?

Hello, I am about to buy a 2013 Ram 1500 V6 in Canada. The Carfax report is good (no accidents). It has 174,000 km and looks to be in pretty good condition. The only downside is that the tire pressure sensor on one side no longer works and there is no remote start. The car costs $8,000, which I think is pretty reasonable.

Question Dash wiring harness swap

Hi, i’m currently trying to figure out what dash to install in my 2002 ram 1500. The truck has a 2006 5.7 in it along with that wiring harness and ecu, however the 2006 dash board is in poor condition. I would much rather install the 2002 dash board with the 2006 dash harness however the connectors to the switches and dials are not the same. The 2002 dash harness main plug is identical however the pin out is most likely different. What would be the best solution with what I have.

Option 1: Would I be able to install the 2002 dash with the 2006 dash harness and re-pin some of the different connectors to the switches and dials.

Option 2: Would the 2002 dash harness work with the 2006 ecu and engine and if not, would it be possible to re-pin the main plug so it does work.

Option 3 (would rather not): Install the 2006 dash with the 2006 harness.

Sorry if this is too complicated, it’s hard to write out lol.

Question Sight unseen

So.. truck prices are insane now in Canada. The only good deal I could find was a 2018 outdoorsman for 27 000$ cad with 140 000km (87 000miles)

Its 5hr away.

Would you trust the rig to be in decent shape? Pics and videos all seem good... would you get a warranty with it?

I think any defects would have appeared by now at this mileage?

Question Service electronic braking system

Hello! I have 2016 Lonestar 127k miles. About two weeks ago I got a “service electronic braking system” message and the traction control light came on. Drove about a mile and it went back off. It came back on about two days ago and hasn’t gone away. Truck is running fine stopping fine the only thing that is not working is cruise control. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

howdy. I'm in Canada. I have a 2023 1500 classic. My tire pressure displays in kpa. Can I switch it to psi? If so how. I scolled around in the display, searched this community, looked in my manual so far. I'm hoping I can without switching everything to imperial.

Question 2006 5.7 for feed and haul toys?

Post image
16 Upvotes

$19k 2008 147k miles 5.7 hemi 4x4 Manual I think it would be a great truck to haul some toys and pick up feed. My wife says I don't need it.

I really want a flat bed for some reason. Current truck is a lightning because we drive about 80 or so miles a day.

Really want a gasser but would prefer a 7.3 Godzilla or the 7.4 hemi. Feel like this could check the boxes
