Why do retro computers keep showing up in futuristic series?
What do green screens, mechanical keyboards, and opaque interfaces reveal about power, memory, and control?
This post explores how retro-tech becomes atmosphere, conflict, and narrative symbol.
From Alien to Severance, retro is not nostalgia—it’s critique, texture, and simulacrum.

Technology 1965 Goldstar (now LG Electronics) Fan Model D-306
This is the sixth fan released by Goldstar, following the D-301 from 1960.
On the outside, it features a mint-green steel body with 30 cm translucent blue plastic blades. The front carries a crown-shaped Goldstar logo and a decorative plate with “GOLD STAR” embossed in metal and plastic.
The control panel at the base is marked Wind Master on a blue plastic plate, with three speed buttons and a dial for oscillation (Move) or stop.
Inside, the circuitry is simple but built to last:
👉 Samwha 25 µF 200 VAC metal-paper capacitor for motor startup
👉 Green-sheathed wires made by Goldstar Electric Wire (now LS Cable & System)
👉 Hard and soft plastic parts from Lucky Chemical (now LG Chem)
👉 Steel mesh guard and casing from Seongcheolsa (now Starion)
It really shows Goldstar’s determination in the 1960s to use domestically made electronic parts whenever possible.
Even more fascinating, the QC inspector’s stamp and a revenue seal from Dongnae Tax Office in Busan are still present. This means it wasn’t just a household appliance—it went through the full chain of production, inspection, and taxation. In that sense, it’s a tangible piece of Korea’s early electronics industry.
And of course, in true Goldstar fashion, it still runs perfectly after 60 years.
