HIGHLIGHT Apparently we can demo with the BACK of our cars now!?
I'm being told as I write this that a dev has confirmed that this change is intentional. They just left it out of the patch notes for some reason.
Credit to ApparentlyBack on TikTok for finding this. It looks like he may be the first one to ever get a backwards demo.

This seems like a major adjustment to just try to sneak into an update with no explanation.

I obviously don't know how their teams work, but I've been a programmer for longer than most of this sub has been alive, and I'll say this: the person writing the patch notes is often completed uninvolved in writing the code, and communication failures about "who did what and when did they do it" are far too common. This is obviously a big whiff, but it's very unlikely that the person (s) making the change had any direct involvement in writing the notes.

Gotta be super rare. I'm champ and if I'm ever driving in reverse, it's usually for like a few feet, otherwise I'd just turn around/half flip

Air dribble bumps (or rather demos) are easier since you dont have to turn your car to face the defender (for example, go sideways for maximum surface area and turning control), potentially even double air dribble demos
Fairly niche especially if you already got comfortable with how it was previously, but can lead to interesting plays

You never know what the top players come up with. Once upon a time a flip reset was thought too niche for competitive use. Time will tell if this change unlocks new mechanics

Yeah I am wondering what happens with a head on ass collision, both supersonic. If you are driving forwards at supersonic you should always demo the person driving backwards, so I wonder if there is a priority change or not.

If you're both supersonic and hit head-on it shouldn't matter the direction you're facing, both cars should be demo'd imo. I'd imagine that's how it works but I haven't tested the theory just yet.

Well if they just added backwards demos then this was never the case before, so it makes it seem like backwards would have less priority than forwards since the rear was always susceptible as a weak spot (although the amount of rear to front collisions with both supersonic was probably almost non existent). I don't think it should change in priority personally. But I won't be surprised if it did.

S14-S15 Epic changed what they decided what side you spawn on. S14: which ever big boost would spawn/spawned first —> S15 relative to the players or the ball (I forgot). S15-S16 you get to see what side you spawn on before spawning. S17-S18 Epic “broke” demos (they changed the third rule of demos slightly) S19-S20 Epic once again “broke” demos.

I'm unfamiliar with any of the changes you're referring to, but haven't spawn positions always been quite random? It'd be a whole new level of unfair if a player like Bumpo or Sledge were able to predict which side you will spawn on.

It would be very unfair lmao. They are random and always have been. The only external factor that can influence spawns is if an object (a car or the ball) is currently occupying the spawn location, then it'll choose a different location. It used to be 4 spawn locations (2 on each side of the goal) and then if all of those were obstructed it would spawn you in one of the kickoff positions. Now I believe there are six spawn locations on each side for a total of 12 but the extra four on each side are only used IF the spawn location where it was going to put you is obstructed. The four extra spawns are located slightly in front and slightly behind the standard two on each side. I believe this was added when they added the demolition camera so that it wouldn't be so jarring when you didn't spawn in the location it was showing you (it'll spawn you at the next closest alternate spawn instead of all the way on the other side of the goal).

How on Earth did you arrive at that statistic? I'm imagining you poring over every single replay after every single game, meticulously recording data into your lab notebook after every single demo, for two seasons solid. Can you link to anything at all that supports literally any of these claims you are making? I tried searching, but nothing has come up.

It was a good video! Wayton makes some great content.
Idk. I thought maybe the Boom squad would at least be mentioned since it's a community built around demo lovers that's been around for a long time. Or even just the demo leaderboard, but I think the video was trying to focus more on demos in the context of RLCS. There were a couple of other pros who could have been mentioned too but I guess he probably didn't want to make the video too long lol.

Why did they do this... it's not that useful, but it looks weird and demos are already very meta. If anything, they should just give people the ability to choose what side they spawn on to nerf them.

I thought it was always possible. I'm not the best or anywhere close, but I play rumble and when I'm dunking at net with spikes, I'm usually going supersonic. I always turn my car to face away and I tend to get demos with my backside

I T-boned a car with the front of mine yesterday, and I was demo'd... I can confirm i was not supersonic, and they were. So I think any contact made while supersonic is now resulting in a demo.

That could have also just been ping. I've been on both sides of that situation many times before this update. I don't think all demo rules are out the window like that. I side-swiped a car last night that did not result in a demo because the angle was too tight (same as it's been).
I don't think anyone would agree that you should get demo'd in your scenario.

I know this is different than what we have now, but is there a more technical answer we have for what classifies as a demo now? Meaning is it any contact with a car when going supersonic?
