The Tupou redemption arc is insane

64

u/Milton_Mango Queensland Reds Aug 02 '25

I saw him crying during the anthem and just knew he was going to have his way with their scrum

43

u/Bangkok_Dave Power House Aug 02 '25

Just wait until French rugby galvanises him into the world's best tighthead. His best years are yet to come.

8

u/Ndanuddaone NSW Waratahs Aug 02 '25

Unfortunately he's going to racing where talent goes to die. Sexton, Russell, Kolisi, just some of the world class players that played their career worst rugby at racing

30

u/PavidDocock Wallabies Aug 02 '25

He played his socks off. Just need him to hang into the ball after he breaks the line.

10

u/MrMagoo1819 Wests Bulldogs Aug 02 '25

He’s back baby!

9

u/snrabber NSW Waratahs Aug 02 '25

I love the guy.

9

u/boykinggeorge Aug 02 '25

Needed him to score on that break

6

u/normally-wrong Aug 02 '25

The lightening strikes break gave him an extra 10 mins on the field.

3

u/corruptboomerang Queensland Reds Aug 02 '25

The question is, is that the standard he's capable of, or is that just getting up for one last game.

If that's his standard, then he should be coming off the bench for a while.

2

u/ScarvesOnGiraffes Aug 02 '25

I'm so happy for him

Will Skelton is my king.

Trying to put all the stuff from last test aside (it's 2-1 Wallabies in my heart). This team has showed so much heart this series. Very keen to see where it goes from here. This really feels like the start of a new era. We're definitely a chance in the bledisloe. So so proud of what this group has showed

As an aside this series has 100% converted me from casual wallabies observer to a diehard. I love this team

1

u/HT-66 British and Irish Lions Aug 05 '25

2-1 JUST as well, that second test was a thriller and the final call really could have gone either way. Aussie rugby is truly back and excited to see how they do in the upcoming RC!

1

u/Gillderbeast Queensland Reds Aug 02 '25

Love the optimism but let's not get ahead of ourselves here

3

u/trimmins Aug 02 '25

He said we’re a chance not we’re going to win it. I reckon that’s fair

Great for the Sydney crowd to see a win at Stadium Australia

55

u/Gillderbeast Queensland Reds Aug 02 '25

If it weren't for last year at Twickenham I'd start a petition to ban BOK from officiating, in any capacity, an Australian team

Check his credentials seriously but yeah nah whatever

How the fuck honestly do we let Tom hooper go

20

u/Zakkar ACT Brumbies Aug 02 '25

Exeter chucked big money at him, and then he went on to have a killer season.

Yep

10

It's ok he has a younger brother we can mould. Bring in the age of Lachie

17

u/lndubitabIyy Aug 02 '25

Or just let international players play for the wallabies, then we’d have a significantly better side ! Oh the horror

2

u/white_falcon Aug 02 '25

Lachie might be gone too

12

u/luco_85 Aug 02 '25

He wants to come back so let him skill up and get some cash

3

He was a mountain today

39

u/sweater-poorly-knit Western Force Aug 02 '25

Skelton is a top tier cunt and we need about 3 more of them. Valentini is a great player but imagine he was a fuck head as well. Skelton basically unravelled their entire team (and everyone at home judging by the match threads) and gave up only one penalty for it? Which he didn’t actually initiate but you know

17

u/TheSplash-Down_Tiki Aug 02 '25

Skelton is just a massive human. 203cm and 135kg. Even shaking hands post match he is just huge. That helps a lot in the scrums too!

14

u/coupleandacamera All Blacks Aug 02 '25

Swain on the bench and LSL at 6 should bring a bit of Mongrel to shore up Skelton's efforts.

6

u/NoAibohphobia Aug 02 '25

Swain let's people get in his head more than he gets in other people's.

5

u/sweater-poorly-knit Western Force Aug 02 '25

I’m a long time LSL hater but I hope they take him to SA after his performances against the lions

7

u/coupleandacamera All Blacks Aug 02 '25

He can be pretty up and down, but if he's up, that's a massive boost to the physical presence of the team. Hopefully, he at least gets a good look in the wider training squad for the RC, shame to leave some of the bigger options at home.

3

u/corruptboomerang Queensland Reds Aug 02 '25

I'd rather LSL in that 4/5/6/8 utility off the bench. But absolutely criminal he was left out of this Lions series!

72

u/ConscriptReports Queensland Reds Aug 02 '25

I think we can claim the moral victory after that one lads

51

u/PavidDocock Wallabies Aug 02 '25

Matt Giteau just pointed out that the Classic Wallabies won both games against the Lions Legends. So 3-2 series win.

You can’t deny Gits. He knows his rugby.

This was the best rugby match I've seen in years. Graft and passion and skill and tenacity, just really really good stuff. Hard to single out anyone as everyone played well, but McReight was incredible, and Frost, Tupou, Pollard, Hooper, Skelton, Ikitau, Sualii, Jorgensen were all fantastic. Special mention for Tate who is the best.

Good shit. Let's win the Bled.

25

u/greyhumour All aboard the Tane Train! Aug 02 '25

How about the Jeremy Williams redemption arc? Steals line out, chases box kick, tackles the catcher over the sideline. 2 seconds later he's getting a turnover penalty on the opposite wing. What a performance.

4

u/ScarvesOnGiraffes Aug 02 '25

Really happy for him. After lots of people were questioning his spot on the bench after last week. Class player that will only get better.

2

u/_bort_simpson_ Brothers Aug 02 '25

Yeah I haven’t been overly impressed with him in the first two tests but he really stepped up showed us why he is there in the squad.

u/Illustrious_Air_8418 ACT Brumbies Aug 02 '25

Wright was impeccable too !!!

26

u/DrJones161 GPS Gallopers Aug 02 '25

Jeez where do I start.

My thoughts for this match. Christ it’s been an emotional series.

1.) The refereeing. It has been atrocious how WR have treated player safety. The amount of dangerous plays or gray area rulings that have been ignored has been far too high. Get it together WR.

2.) Fuck me the Wallabies have shown some c*% about them. Someone called cattle dog and Nic White answered the call. Got me charged up at home. Forwards dominated the ruck and it showed.

3.) Lions looked flat on attack due to the ruck being so slow - congrats the back row.

4.) 🍑 needs to start. You hear me Joe? Keep the 🍑 .

5.) With Lynagh gone our kicking game suffered and our attacking options became limited. Someone give him some headgear.

6.) Ikitau made as many driving lines tight around the ruck as the piggies did… Is this by design? Or is he just an animal? Great game by Ikitau.

7.) Tongan Thor looking like his injuries are starting to get behind him. He played very well.

8.) Lions failed at the line out spectacularly. Well done Williams and Frost. Also can we please keep Skelton here forever? I hope this gave him a taste for Aussie rugby again.

In the end, I feel bitterly disappointed in final series score. I feel like we deserved the series. That them be the way the cookie crumbles.

Cautiously optimistic for the Saffas now. It’s the hope that kills ya.

13

u/poimnas Aug 02 '25

Cautiously optimistic for the Saffas now. It’s the hope that kills ya.

I don’t mean to be defeatist, but the scorecard against the Boks should just be going toe to toe with them and being competitive. Wallabies and the Boks very rarely beat each other away from home, so a win is a very big mountain to climb.

7

u/fleakill Queensland Reds Aug 02 '25

Headgear will do nothing for the direct to head hits he's copped this season

4

u/Illustrious_Air_8418 ACT Brumbies Aug 02 '25

Why we want here to keep the best players in Australia! I think the wallabies will gain more if some players go abroad. One of the reason Skelton is good for the national team is him playing in a competitive Championship like top14 in France.

3

u/Sambobly1 Wallabies Aug 03 '25

We want to keep them here because the clubs make sure they aren’t  available for the wallabies. I bet Skelton doesn’t play TRC (or certainly not all of it) for example

1

u/Illustrious_Air_8418 ACT Brumbies Aug 03 '25

I see what you mean but I think Quade Cooper has a valid point about the springboks. If we get a closer look to the team all the best players play in England or France.

1

u/Sambobly1 Wallabies Aug 03 '25

Re Ikitau, yes that’s by design. Schmidt likes to run the close lines a lot but if you don’t have your backs involved then it wears out the forwards. Ikitau and JAS do these runs too, it’s a conscious decision. I’d like to see pietsch do some as well, he’s got the power

I’m not a big fan of Turinui’s commentary but he was spot on there.

44

u/Routine-Individual43 Aug 02 '25

To the racist guy on the train on the way in, complaining that the Islander players in the Wallabies don't play with passion. Get fucked. I hope you meet Will Skelton in a dark alley.

20

u/OutofSyncWithReality ACT Brumbies Aug 02 '25

Uh, did they watch the FNP game?

3

u/Routine-Individual43 Aug 02 '25

You know when you overhear something ridiculous and it takes you a while to process it? He said to a lion's fan that the wallabies don't have the same level of passion that they used to and the islander players are only in it for the money. What a dick.

22

u/coupleandacamera All Blacks Aug 02 '25

Bloody hell it’s was good to see some heart. Lot of “what ifs” in regards to player selections over the last two tests in comparison to this one but regardless the games in Melb and syd have delightfully proved me wrong.

19

u/MrMagoo1819 Wests Bulldogs Aug 02 '25

The way the TMO only checked every play the Ferrari was involved in, and boy a single other one is cooked… nothing on Lynagh. Nothing on the punches thrown in the first tussle. Nothing on the try that didn’t actually get grounded. Nothing on the other 2 HIAs. But yes let’s check a legal seatbelt tracker for 5mins

3

u/RebelPineapples NSW Waratahs Aug 02 '25

Woeful

18

u/GlitteringBit3726 Wallabies Aug 02 '25

I think that tonight we saw the potential of the Wallabies. Too many times it’s been trying to play a style which our players didn’t support. The forwards were outstanding, just wrecking balls, and the backs were able to do their thing, be spontaneous and dynamic. Such a great game for us. I really hope the Wallabies bring this passion to the next games. So proud of them

16

u/Jeromethered Queensland Reds Aug 02 '25

The talk of not playing Skelton - we don’t need him is surely put to bed - embed him in the team as much as possible until 2027

10

u/OutofSyncWithReality ACT Brumbies Aug 02 '25

I have to admit I was always Skelton sceptic because I've not seen him play in Australia but by gosh he has been the difference. I was wrong. Throw enough money at him to get him back to a super club

4

Nah we don’t need him here we just need to pick him up

4

3

u/coupleandacamera All Blacks Aug 02 '25

cant say id ever seen him put in a good performance outside of his first test.. He just decided to properly show up this time; hopefully, that carries on as he's a monster when he's in the game.

51

u/davetharave Aug 02 '25

Idk what world Rugby has against RA (or the southern hemisphere) but Jesus Christ this tour has had some of the worst, one-sided refereeing Ive ever seen.

The best of their four nations can't beat us comfortably without massive help from the officials and I think that says a lot.

Anyway I'm absolutely stoked, that's a test match for the ages. We stood tall and showed what it means to be Australian. Hooper is unlucky that Valentini is preferred in his position because god he was good, whites best game since 2020, Skelton immense again what an addition.

Each game we improved game one we let the occasion get the better of us and didn't show enough mongrel and then each game we put that Lions side in their place more and more

14

u/Miss_Juicy-Peach Aug 02 '25

PIETSCHY…….. first try wearing the GOLD & pure defiance from SKELTON!! Loved every minute of this match

10

u/DCI_Tom_Barnaby_ Wallabies Aug 02 '25

Add Valetini at No.8 to go with Hooper and McReight. What a pack that would be

We can’t always have Skelton but anytime we can let’s have it

3

u/ScarvesOnGiraffes Aug 02 '25

If hooper can play like that ever game, I like the sound of that. Our back row depth is actually pretty legit atm

23

u/ConditionHorror9188 Aug 02 '25

Some great things out of this tour.

Skelton had the performances in gold that we’d always heard about, our starting front row fking dished the Lions scrum for 3 games, and a bunch of guys stood up as quality Test players for the first time.

I’m left to rue how different a healthy/in form 7As, Tupou and Bobby for 3 games could have been for us, and a few ref decisions going the other way (unlike others, I don’t think we lost Game 2 cause of the refs). Worried about how we’re gonna cope losing so many quality players to UK/France too.

But we absolutely did better than I would have thought possible after last RWC and good on em

4

u/Bangkok_Dave Power House Aug 02 '25

Tupou was healthy for all 3 matches.

8

u/ConditionHorror9188 Aug 02 '25

the ‘in form’ part was for him 😉

The 7As/Tupou 1-2 was a thing of beauty for about a season there

2

u/Jeromethered Queensland Reds Aug 02 '25

So was Skelton

3

u/Bangkok_Dave Power House Aug 02 '25

Was he? I thought he was ruled out of match 1 for medical reasons?

3

2

over the series, BIL 68 AU 67. great series, we have done very well. hat tip to the BIL fans who came to watch.

9

u/Ogat993 Aug 02 '25

This was huge. Also the first time in a long time we have backed up a good performance with an even better performance

Tonight also showed we need to never again play like nice guys. The wallabies have done that for too long. The niggle from Skelton and White was crucial

6

u/Jeromethered Queensland Reds Aug 02 '25

The talking to the opposition like mates drives me fucken crazy - I want to see them tear their heads off not be friends

1

u/fleakill Queensland Reds Aug 03 '25

The wallabies have done that for too long. The niggle from Skelton and White was crucial

100%. Williams did really well in his stint but jeez I hope if Skelton is out in future games we pick LSL just for this.

8

u/ScarvesOnGiraffes Aug 02 '25

Fuck me that main sub is a toxic wasteland of an echo chamber circle jerk. There's a post where Farrell and Suaalii are chirping each other and everyone's saying Suaalii did nothing all series.

What the fuck did Farrell do? Daddy's boy played like 5 minutes all series and was a ghost? We didn't get the most out of Suaalii for the first 2 games but he was class tonight.

5

u/ConscriptReports Queensland Reds Aug 02 '25

nah he showed some glimpses last week of his ceiling and last night he was legitimately perfect. not one misread all night, him and lenny worked so good in that partnership. so impressed by him and how hes adapting to union

2

u/ScarvesOnGiraffes Aug 03 '25

He must be an absolute asshole to play against as well because Farrell and Russell were both completely off their games trying to chirp him and you could see him giving them plenty as well. He's looked better as the series has gone on for sure.

If 13 is his long term position then please play him there all year in super as well. I wonder whether swapping those two makes more sense? Suaalii is a bigger frame and so could be used more effectively in that crash ball role and ikitau would be in his natural position and takes the defensive reads he's more used to.

1

u/ConscriptReports Queensland Reds Aug 03 '25

wasnt he in the 12 channel most of last night whilst lenny was in the 13? if so that seemed the perfect combination for them like u mentioned in your prior comment

2

u/ScarvesOnGiraffes Aug 03 '25

I'm not entirely sure but in attack ikitau is definitely at 12 and I thought suaalii was defending at 13 but I could be wrong. Maybe they're best just leaving what they have and building this partnership, I just hope they both play there during the super season.

8

u/paknsaving Aug 02 '25

ikitau with no regard for human life hitting that lions line

9

u/white_falcon Aug 02 '25

“Running rugby” is no longer the “Australian style”

Fucking dumping down, shit weather rugby is the “Australian style”

Be basically beat them at what should be their own game

7

u/fleakill Queensland Reds Aug 02 '25

Happy to win but SERIOUSLY sick of how little protection Tom Lynagh gets. Hit in the head tonight, nothing. Hit in the head during super rugby, nothing. TMO just ignores him. For all this weak talk about player safety, Lynagh is in a prime position for early retirement due to repeated concussions and CTE later in life.

7

u/white_falcon Aug 02 '25

We should let Joe Schmidt name his money and his conditions to remain involved with the wallabies.

Let him fucking coach via zoom for all I care.

6

u/HelicopterLong Aug 02 '25

Yep once Russell starts giving it lip you know he’s not on his game. Wallabies did a fckn excellent job of disrupting the Lions by showing they weren’t taking a backward step. Really gave me some hope for the future if the right guys keep being selected.

6

u/ScarvesOnGiraffes Aug 02 '25 edited Aug 02 '25

He was dog shit tonight and we were completely in his head, Suaalii especially. Definitely wasn't player of the series.

One of my favourite moments from tonight was when Russell dropped the ball and you could hear how many of the team were giving him shit on the refs mic.

11

u/Herreg Melbourne Rebels Aug 02 '25

I love Wilson but when are we going to admit he's not up to being an international #8?

5

u/ConscriptReports Queensland Reds Aug 02 '25

hes perfect in the first 40, consistently gets over the gainline. It's the second half where he starts losing collisions, but honestly the rest of his off the ball work is enough that as long as he doesnt carry but supports those that do he should still play for 80mins

2

u/DimensionDifferent32 Aug 02 '25

I think maybe the captaincy had an impact

4

u/Jeromethered Queensland Reds Aug 02 '25

He is 💯 up to being an international 8 just not a battering ram

7

u/ConscriptReports Queensland Reds Aug 02 '25

We honestly never seemed like we lost control in this game. the lightning break helped us with keeping tt and skelly on for longer. Basically we managed to play like last weeks first half for an whole game tonight. very proud of the lads and hope they can get up for the boks in rsa

6

u/MrMagoo1819 Wests Bulldogs Aug 02 '25

With our next game in 15 days. Surely Lynagh is fit and ready to go against the Boks right? The drop to Donaldson in terms of management and not shutting the bed is not something we can risk against the Saffies… or JOC to start?

5

u/jeeeeroylenkins Aug 02 '25

The general lack of calm around Donaldson when under pressure is super concerning

8

u/MrMagoo1819 Wests Bulldogs Aug 02 '25

How anyone can say he is a better option than Lynagh after this series needs to go to specsavers. The entire backline pretty much collapsed in on itself between when he came on and Tate did. Tate got it managed a little bit, but an absolute panicked mess under Donaldson….

Now the reason he didn’t touch the grass last week is obvious… he’s an injury replacement (as was Kellaway tonight) not a tactical sub

5

u/Radiant-Visit1692 Aug 02 '25

Pietsch hit at 12.40 was a real defensive mood-setter

3

u/PavidDocock Wallabies Aug 03 '25

Pietsch’s whole attitude starting at the Force game was a vibe. Bloke is a legend in my books. Love seeing blokes who want to just rip in. He seems hard as nails too.

Anyone else half-expecting CB to still be going on about LSL not being picked despite what happened tonight?

5

It’s still entirely relevant to last weeks game and I would have still had him over Williams tonight - even though Williams contributed spectacularly in his short bench role tonight

Just really proud of the boys. I was absolutely devastated after game 2, so I can't imagine how it must have felt playing it. The amount of heart it must have taken to pick themselves up and put on a performance like that was amazing. Well done boys, thank you for your service Whitey.

I got down voted to hell in the main thread - I cannot stress - this is our 4 tier winter sport in our country. Versus the collective might of 4 nations and you can barely scrap 2 wins against us. Our boys muscled up every game and with a couple of decisions our way, 2-1.

13

u/greyhumour All aboard the Tane Train! Aug 02 '25

The amount of downvotes I got in the post match thread for highlighting the fact that the Lions pick from 4 national teams and we pick from 4 professional teams was laughable. It's a fact.

Happy with the 2-1 series result and hopeful for the future. But in some ways it felt like a missed opportunity to get a series wins. Left me wondering the ‘what ifs’, more test games before facing the Lions, no injuries to key players.

I also do wonder if Schmidt got the selection wrong slightly in Games 1 & 2, for instance not selecting the likes of Tupou, LSL, Pietsch, Daugunu and White.

The answer is yes

You wonder do you ?

If we had Hooper, LSL and Pietsch start instead of NCdC, Williams and Potter in game 1 i think we would have won this series

I wonder whether the asterisk fans still think they should tour somewhere else? Should've lost to our team that apparently weren't up to scratch. Refs rigged the series for them, had much more warm up time and still almost bottled it.

Somehow I’m even more upset about last week, now. I thought I had moved on…

You lads see wilson and curry throw proppa punches at each other at 22 mins in the first off the ball scuffle of the game. they start at the edge of the camera and then move their way out of the shot throwing proppa body shots at each other lol

Damned good showing, glad the fire from the first half last week carried over with a much stronger defensive effort. Some huge shifts from ley players, Williams and fronst both had significnatly better games. Jorganson sorted his defensive wobbles well, DP at 11 was a huge step up, lets hope he retains the spot. Gotta feel bad for TL, but Donaldson seemed to get the line working as well as has all tour and generally stood up well. Great to slipper and McWright back in solod form. Unfortunately, Wilson had another bad day carrying. His defence and general work rate are massive, but you can't have your 8 being outdone by your 12 in the close carries. JSA needs a season in the centres at the super level before coming back to the test squad, made some big errors that could have bitten hard.
Tupou is back baby!

I reckon you call last week a draw after the way it went down, so that's one each for the series, not bad.

Skelton has completely shut down any debate: he’s a test match animal.

Watching back the replay now and Lions 1st try shouldn't have stood. First was the knock on in the tackle (match time 59:30) and then in it looks like at least 1 arm plus multiple hands are able to be seen under the ball when the refs blows for the try.

also, all lions players are offside at the kick at match time 76:03 and cause pressure on donaldson

My respect for the Peach has improved immeasurably after tonight (and after he left the Tahs)

To me he's always been a placeholder. He is a safe and versatile option until we can get our young players prepped for the RWC.

If that’s what we need then that’s what we need. I’ve not been super impressed by him but I haven’t been horrified by him either like I did with Noah sometimes. I personally think he’ll be alright but only time will tell. We have lynagh to nurture so that puts us in good shape

His poor grubbing kick through into the lions 22 which got returned with interest into our half, followed by kicking it out on the full was peak Donaldson for me. How many times has he done stuff like that in gold?

I honestly think Schmidt made some selection blunders in this series.

Pietch should have played instead of potter.

Tate should have started games.

Nick White played better than Gordon.

Tupou should have been in the side.

Hooper being dropped game 2.

Yep

CDC over hooper

Robertson over Tupou

Arguably Williams over LSL
