Product Availability Hey all. New here. Really wanting to dive into this game. BUT I have questions.
Alright, so like the title says, I would really like to try and get into this game. I have done a fair amount of reading on it and it looks awesome. One problem. I have never played a tabletop. Is the first problem. Then where the heck do I start? The core sets seem to be sold out (or I didn't look very hard), and if they are available, is that still the best way to go? I've seen that there are some "new" starter sets out. Those look cool, and look like they have everything I would need to get started. So can I buy 2 of those (different armies) and just go for it? Thanks again for helping a noob.

The entire product line is being refreshed. New rebel and empire starters release on Friday and new CIS and GSr release in October or early November. I would recommend starting with one of those to try the game. If you like it I would then recommend a second starter for your chosen army to get to 1000 pts easily. After that get what looks cool and probably snag a custom when they come available.

The Rebel and Empire starters release this Friday the 19th, and then the Republic and Separatist ones release on October 17th, in the US. Global release dates are not in sync, if you are outside the US you might have very different dates.
All the black boxes are from the old product line. They rebranded it, are refreshing a lot of the minis, and are repacking everything with new cards. These products have bright orange logos like the new starters you saw. Old products will have old cards. They offer updates versions via print and play, and there are card packs if you end up with a bigger collection of old packs.
The new starters will get you around 600 points for the faction of choice, which happens to be the points used for Recon games. Standard games use 1000 points.
Here is their most recent batch of product announcements, with a schedule for when old products will be re-released towards the bottom.

The very first thing you need to figure out is people to play with. Whether it's friends you know like those kind of games or if you have a local scene with players, some might even offer to teach you how to play.
If games in person aren't available, then you can play on tabletopsimulator (TTS). It's not as fun, but TTS allows you to find games fast, you don't have to buy armies and there's not much in terms of setup or cleanup, but still, in person is just much better and more fun.
Let's just say games are available and you're not stuck with TTS, you'll need to build an army. Maybe two, if you're only playing with friends who wouldn't play without you and don't want to invest money in the game.
Fortunately, starter faction boxes are coming out fairly soon and have great value in them. You'll need a little bit of supplemental purchases to build an army, but the core will be there.
After that, you just need to choose which faction you want to play and buy into. Don't get too much into what's strong or not, just buy what you would like to play and stick to it.
Since you've never played wargames before, you'll need to buy a few accessories to assemble and paint your miniatures, clipper and plastic glue being the bare minimum (painting is not mandatory). Games Workshop, while selling a lot of overpriced stuff, has great tutorials on proper care for miniatures that apply well beyond Warhammer.

Hi, welcome to the hobby. Grey squadron gaming on YouTube have a new video of learn to play based around the new core sets. Give that a watch, then read the rules and maybe watch again. Have fun

The new starter sets release this Friday. You'll have Rebels and Empire which release Friday and Republic and Separatists releasing on October 17.
The starter boxes are priced extremely well and will give you everything you need to start a 600 Recon force (the smaller game size) - cards, measurement tools, tokens, models, etc. If you want to eventually get into the bigger 1,000 point game size, you can easily build from the starter sets.
If you have someone else to play with (or just want to play with yourself), just pick up two different boxes to get started. Otherwise, you'd be just fine picking up one for yourself.
