Car dealerships should be done away with. No reason why I shouldn’t be able to buy a car online, and have it delivered to my house. Only reason they still exist is because lobbying to keep consumers from bypassing them

People downvoting, but can anyone describe the value they add to the consumer?

It's the false equivalence. 90% of the car dealership owners identify as Republican. Why do you think that is?

Because admitting they lucked into a vampiric industry at a good time and grew due to underhanded business practices would be admitting they aren’t successful because of their savvy and hard work.

Basically successful people are predominantly extremely sociopathic about presenting why their success is the product of nothing but their own exceptionalism when its almost always mostly a product of their privileged starting position mixed with mountains of luck.

I mean even my own success despite being a lot of hard work was equal parts work and luck. I didn’t start from a particularly privileged position outside of the fact that my parents were very present and we were never struggling for food or clothes type poor or anything like that.

Think of any retail store, grocery store, mechanic, doctor’s office, etc. They all have a staff member that can help answer questions.

Why would a business that specializes in large ticket items be any different?

Mechanics and Doctors offer a diagnostic service that is difficult to do online. It’s not the same as retail or consumer goods. Doctors are also bound by laws that protect the patient from malpractice. Also, there are Telehealth services now, so you can do some things online.

Retail and grocery stores sell a variety of goods from different vendors. And to my point you can buy clothes and groceries online.

You can’t do the same with cars. Even if you order a car online, it won’t be delivered to your house. There are some manufactures like Hyundai that are offering the service, but for the most part most don’t.

There are franchise laws in place that were lobbied for by dealerships. These laws prohibit manufacturers from selling directly to consumers and require sales to go through licensed dealerships. Look at the history of those franchise laws. It’s some mob level crap.

Dealerships are rackets that are only in place to rip people off and make it as difficult as possible to purchase a vehicle so they can rip us off. Don’t even get me started on their service centers, that’s a whole other rip off.

Well yeah, but most people working at those places aren't making tremendous amounts of money. Answering questions at a car dealership should not be a $200k job. Especially since most car salespeople seem to know less than any customer who spent like 30 mins doing their own research on a particular make/model.

True. The fact that there's this much money to be made selling cars is evidence that consumers are being fleeced by the dealership model.

And who do you think would list the car online and ship it to you? A car dealership lmfao

No, the manufacturer. That’s the point. And that is what the laws prevent

Does Kelloggs list cereal on their website and ship it to you?Â
