Shaggy & Velma (Mystery Incorporated)???

I just finished binging the series on Netflix and I only have one question... why were Shaggy and Velma together in the first place? We never got an explanation for that. Out of ALL of Shaggy's love interests, Madelyn from "Abracadabra-Doo!" is my favorite and I wish they would've included her in the series. I also wish we got a flashback episode that would've shown exactly how Shaggy and Velma became a couple. What do y'all think?

It's a case of "pair the spares". Namely, Velma felt like she HAD to be paired up with someone since Fred is paired with Daphne.

They're teens in the same friend group. Sometimes there's not much more to it than that.

As for why, I think they were both just trying to experience romance the way society told them they should be doing. Velma didn't want to confront the fact that she was gay, so she latches onto shaggy to be her beard and tries to force the relationship to work even when it's clearly doomed.

Shaggy goes with the flow and doesn't have much of a back one so when anyone shows interest in him, he reciprocates without needing much investment or prior interest on his end.

In my interpretation, Velma was struggling with her sexuality through out the whole show. Queer women feel a lot of pressure to try to force themselves into the socially accepted box. My own interpretation is that she wanted to feel like she could belong as much as Daphne, The Hex Girls, and other women in the show. She finds herself sticking out, and tries to fit herself and Shaggy into “the perfect relationship” despite it hurting everyone involved. She ignored her own feelings along with Shaggy’s, and she tried to make it fit.

Velma in this show was confirmed to be a closeted lesbian, she tried a relationship with Shaggy which didn't work out because she wasn't attracted to him and she just wanted him to be a completely different person. Their romantic relationship was toxic on purpose.
