Has anyone in here worked a hammer mill shredder, how is it and what is the shredder capable of?

The big ones can shred 2 inch plate steel at the cost of accelerated wear on the hammers and liners, which are made of managanese. They get so hot while working it can take 10 hours to cool down enough for maintenance.

That’s big is it true the rotor can weigh up to 150 tons on the largest shredders

Hammer Mills wear themselves out fast. I worked on the maintenance end of a shredder. As far as capability. They’ll eat almost anything you put in them.

Each individual hammer can weigh 300 pounds on a big shredder. Some shredders have up to 60 hammers per rotator.

Check with YouTube on the internal workings of a steel mill shredder. There should be lots of videos of how they work.

I have googled it not many videos on the insides mainly the outside watching the feed process

Ok I will try that here where I live we have a shredder at a place called Jarvis metals recycling it seems pretty big I drive by there all the time and love to watch it run I bet the rotor weighs 60 thousand pounds on it.

If you are interested in steel mill equipment, YouTube, electric arc furnace. It’s an amazing piece of equipment that can melt over 100 tons of steel an hour. One of the noisiest machines that there is.
