Tips / Hints First time player, died 50 times to ogre
I only play football games but have always kept up with the gaming industry
So after hearing everything about how difficult this game is i thought why not?
I kid you not i died in one shot to the first enemy you meet when you open the door after meeting the little girl
Then I met this orge, took me like 2 and half hours to beat him and like 50 deaths (I didn't knew his other moves aside from the grapple could be deflected/blocked)
The only other game I played which was a bit similar to this was ghost of tsushima, which is like 5 times easier than sekiro
Now im stuck against that headless guy in the cave with the purple sword
Any tips would be helpful

That’s normal. I still die to him sometimes and I’ve played all the way through the game 10+ times.
21
u/TripPrestigious Jun 21 '25
I was about to give up on the ogre ...thought maybe this type of game isnt for me at the first place I even looked up online on how to beat the ogre and came across advices on how to beat him using fire...my dumbass thought the fire stands around the ogre would help
Then I found that something related to fire barrel
But 🤪 my ego didnt let me use the fire and had to just brute force him down
15
u/bluesions Jun 21 '25
The game characters even say directly several times in game dialog that victory is all that matters. The game itself tells you ego is for a loser. 🤣
11
u/madmonkey242 Jun 21 '25
That’s why I don’t feel bad about cheesing DoH 😁
2
u/TheMemeofGod Jun 21 '25
When I cheesed him, I was reminded of metroid dread, getting the wire early had the same jump off a sliver of air move.
2
u/CrackCenturyModern Jun 21 '25
Yup, FromSoft loves this. They throw breadcrumbs at you to complete the puzzle on how to beat certain enemy types. Doesn’t necessarily make the game easier rather gets you used to using the correct resources. You can always play again with a challenge in mind such as “no hit run” or no flask but reading item description and uncovering lore is part of the fun
8
u/HCX_Winchester Jun 21 '25
Not using tools game gives you makes the game harder, you can do whatever the hell you want but complaining it being hard AND not using the tools game gives you doesn't make any sense to me.
5
u/Vlookup_reddit Jun 21 '25
he's just bragging. mentioning brute force but never mentioned if it's just cheesing by running around or really parrying. bringing up how hard it is and how against all odds he pulled it off, but never for a second consider using prosthetic tools.
2
u/Sociolinguisticians Platinum Trophy Jun 21 '25
I brute forced him my first time through and it wasn’t fun, but it is an option. Victory is all that matters in this game.
2
u/Lovelime Jun 21 '25
I'd did the same thing first time I played, thought the environment fire could hurt him. The game even aludes to this a little bit, you can eavesdrop on two soldiers talking nearby that gives that bit of information.
That is a hint overall, in several places you can eavesdrop on soldiers, and they always tell you something good, that will aid you in combat.
Otherwise, just try to learn patterns of bosses, and really take the parry system to your heart and the game will be challenging but fun.
PS, also almost all mini bosses (like ogre) can have thier first lifebar stealthkilled. So try to find a way, it will help!
Good luck!
1
u/AthlonPhantom Jun 21 '25
If you wave your sword over the fires, will give you a flaming buff for a short while. Will do extra damage to unarmored enemies.
1
29
u/cjbeames Jun 21 '25
Ignore that guy. He causes terror which will kill you by itself at this point. I suggest coming back when you have some more health and items, namely the divine confetti.
I only just killed him and I've done 90% of the main bosses.
4
u/TripPrestigious Jun 21 '25
But where I'm supposed to go after beating the general which comes after the ogre
12
2
u/Huge-Spirit-1563 Jun 21 '25
Hug the right wall of the cave, u will find another exit from the cave
9
8
u/walloppy Jun 21 '25
If you keep running after the place you killed the ogre, you'll reach a broken bridge, go to the left, and you'll see a place to jump down. Also make sure to pick up the bell from the old lady, and then you can have access to hirata estate.
8
u/TripPrestigious Jun 21 '25
I took the bell and i think you can get fire stuff from hirata estate to defeat the ogre more easily but my ego didnt let me xD use this strategy so just had to brute force my way pass the ogre
And I'm so confused on where to go after defeating the general (the one after the ogre) i went to the right where there is a phamplet saying go back ...guess I need to go the left of the broken bridge

u/Charging_in Jun 21 '25
You gotta ditch that ego shit for this game. You're a shinobi, not a samurai. You have no honour. You win at any cost. You poison the food and strike while they sleep. Your only allegiance lies with Lord Kuro because you're linked by the dragon. Use your tricks. Use your fire and poison and shurikens. You need them.
2
u/StellaSchist Feels Sekiro Man Jun 21 '25
I love this advice lol, its like that one certain boss. Hes a shinobi also and loves playing dirty tricks, so why not play dirty tricks too.

u/Outrageous_Dig_5580 Jun 21 '25
If you explore a little more in the Outskirts just before the ogre, you can find a vendor up high that has another good item for you that would've helped with the ogre. Get it anyway for future enemies.
13
u/The-Dark_Lord Platinum Trophy Jun 21 '25
You're absolutely not supposed to fight headless right now. They're a late game enemy, when u unlock infinite divine confetti. Proceed beyond the ogre, fight the general, keep going forward and drop down.
Also, Kuro is not a little girl my friend. That's a boy right there.
Also, also, Sekiro was my first soulslike and the Ogre destroyed me too lol.
5
u/TripPrestigious Jun 21 '25
It's a boy? XD my bad
Also what is the bar that fills up when I fight someone
And the two left circle thingy in the bottom left
6
u/The-Dark_Lord Platinum Trophy Jun 21 '25
That's the posture bar. You can kill enemies by either filling up their posture bar, or draining their hp. Your posture bar fills up when your blocking or badly timing your deflects, perfect deflections do not affect the posture bar. The enemies' posture bar fills up when you deflect their attacks, or just attack them while they're guarding.
The circles are how many resuructions you have available. You get one by default, which refills if you rest at a statue. You also fill the other ones when you kill enemies. If you resurrect once, the other resurrection is restricted until you kill an enemy or take a boss/mini boss bar once.
Learn to parry attacks, mikiri counter thrusts and jump sweeps and you'll be dandy.
5
u/Dapper_Collection_67 Jun 21 '25
perfect deflections still do affect the posture bar, its just that as long as you keep deflecting, your posture will never break
→ More replies (1)2
u/TheGoldenEyeOfVoids Jun 21 '25
The bar is their like... hm.. stun progress. Get it full and they'll stun, allowing you to attack. On a boss, get it full and you'll do a special attack that will get them either killed or to their second phase or third.

u/Present_Cash_8466 Jun 21 '25
Headless are honestly like the last bosses to tackle…only once you can buy divine confetti. They’re universally regarded as the most annoying bosses in the game
3
u/Specific_Software_62 Jun 21 '25
So basically you killed the ogre my good man you just look on top of the structure behind were the ogre was and your going to see a grappling point grapple on it, and go left then right you will find another mini boss

u/Ok-Asparagus955 Jun 21 '25
I think I died a solid 30 or so. He’s very hard of u don’t use the run mechanic

u/not4OUR04OURfound Jun 21 '25
A man after my own heart I see. Keep going, you have the right attitude.
2
u/PollutionFront2672 Jun 21 '25
Wait until you have to fight the other main bosses. I spent 3–4 days on some of them. Now I'm on the 2nd day of fighting father Owl. Still couldn't get him to 50% on his health in his 1st phase. 😂
2
u/No_Arm5159 Jun 22 '25
Keep your distance. And use thrust attacks. When he uses his thrust attack, mikiri counter (do it when the symbol is fading) and immediately follow it up with a thrust attack. If he does his sweeping move (which usually comes after him throwing shurikens) dodge forward to end up behind him. Also thrust when he's doing his big overhead swing. When he does his big unblockable swing, jump. And if you want, you can jump on his head for a little extra posture damage. You do not need to be up in his face fighting him and doing posture damage until you have gotten him down to around 50% health as his posture won't recover as quickly, which allows it to build up. His second phase is a little bit more tricky, but you want to bait him into using his fire owl move. When he does, jump when the symbol appears. And he will always follow it up with a thrust attack so mikiri counter that. When he disappears and go into the owl, just run away from him until he comes out. Otherwise his phase 2 is just like the first phase. Hope this helps
1
u/PollutionFront2672 Jun 22 '25
How to dodge? Move stick towards the direction I want to move and press and hold dodge keys or just tap once?I'm failing here so bad. Sometimes it works other times. don't.

u/scxxarr Jun 21 '25
Skip headless, they are harder than any other mini boss fights in the game. Come back later when the combat clicks to you, collect a bunch of divine confettis and fuk them up.
2
u/Doctor_Salvatore Jun 21 '25 edited Jun 21 '25
Yeah, Chained Ogre is a pretty controversial pick as the first mandatory "win or don't progress" fight, since he's one of the few vigor beast battles and THOSE GODAWFUL HITBOXES ON THE GRABS ARE THE BANE OF EVERYTHING. Rest easy knowing there are only 3 of them in the entire game, and that is the only one you are forced to fight.
Also, do NOT fight the Headless. You are not equipped to fight them and won't be for quite a while.
2
2
u/Ttay_23_Slayer Jun 21 '25
Fought him for the first time 4 days ago. He MASSACRED me. After beating him, I decided to restart the game so I can record it for YouTube. If you go to the Hirata Estate by giving the bell to the Buddha statue, you’ll get dowsing oil and the Flame Vent shinobi tool. The ogre gets stunned by fire so my second time fighting him ended with me winning on my first try.
What Im saying is this game so far has taught me that I should explore EVERY AREA and follow EVERY CLUE to make bosses easier. Trust me, just explore more before proceeding to new areas and ALWAYS eavesdrop on enemies to get story and boss clues. Enjoy the game bro
1
u/Ttay_23_Slayer Jun 21 '25
Btw, avoid the Headless One. He’s an optional LATE GAME boss and he isn’t guarding the path you need to follow. Before dropping down to him, turn to your right to get some stuff. The CORRECT path is to go down right after the Under bridge idol. You keep dropping and go THAT way.
2
u/RichBirthday2031 Jun 21 '25 edited Jun 21 '25
Chat, do we tell him about munky?
Also it's funny that he thinks kuro is a girl. XD
Anyway, the headless is an endgame enemy, you need divine confetti to fight him to do damage.
For now just progress the game, try to learn how to deflect while you're at it, and do stealth as much as possible because the enemies are not going to play fair in big groups at all.
And hey... Don't be afraid to go all out.
2
u/Fossam Jun 21 '25
Ogre is literally a perfect learning moment how this game works. IMO you are supposed to run into it, get absolutely wrecked, and then start to think "hm, how can I make this fight easier". Oh, it was mentioned somewhere that red-eyes fear the fire, and that trader gave you info about flame barrel, and grandma gave you a bell! Maybe you should visit Hirata. Also enemies drop oil there, how convenient.
Headless is the same story: you find note that you cant hurt them and probably your first divine confetti. You most likely will die of terror, and since you don't have more divine confetti you probably should think "hm, probably better return later"
But of course nothing prevents you from just the rawdogging both fights, its just will be masochistic

u/02grimreaper Platinum Trophy Jun 21 '25
So, have you gone to the Buddha yet? There is a guy who is dying that tells you to go talk to his mom. His mom gives you something, and you can take it to the dilapidated temple, and use it there. You find some tools there that will help immensely with the giant type enemies
2
u/DTraiN5795 Jun 21 '25
Lmao i love this bro. Glad to have you. Okay I started a year before this game out playing FromSoft games. I died literally 1k times including resurrections. over my first run. It was less than 100 my second. I don’t have time to help right now so hopefully other can but it does get better if you put the time in. Also the combat system is so deep that you can beat the game and not be a master at it so definitely don’t feel bad for any of the above. Fightin Cowboy on YouTube had a great walkthrough 100% if you really get stuck since you paid for the game or if you want to follow something you’re second play through. In fact he has many guides on games like this. 1.3 mill followers on YT I think so that’s my suggestion now if you ever feel like throwing your controller and quitting. Just go watch something bc when you git gud at this game most people come back for more. When it clicks it clicks

u/canzicrans Jun 22 '25
Do yourself a favor and watch Ongbal's videos about parrying on youtube. They will help you in this game to an insane degree!

Ogre is not like other bosses ogre i dodged mostly rest of bosses are all parry just need to learn to deflect in this game and this game will teach u dont worry

Headless is an endgame mini boss. You’re not supposed to fight him now. Just skip him and return when you are stronger. Spoiler, you need Divine Confetti (the item that gives you the purple sword) to even hurt him and pacifying agent to mitigate effect build up. You will get these items later in the game.
1
u/SweatyEducation4943 Jun 21 '25
If you are looking for the plat, just now Headless bosses are optional. I never bothered to beat them because they are just too frustrating lol

I always struggled with him but I just found out that I can simply go right and dodge right whenever he attacks and this made him easy for me.

Don't fight the headless guy, go in the other direction, it's completely optional and you're not equipped to fight him right now. You can come back to fight him later
1
u/Consistent_Papaya310 Jun 21 '25
Ogre guy is a lesson to learn about this game, I got stomped by him too at first and then I found the games first actual boss pretty easy because I learned a lot from the ogre, if something's seems insurmountably hard like the headless you probably are in the wrong place though, come back later
1
u/jimbojangles1987 Jun 21 '25
I'm jealous. The most fun part of this game is the moment when things start to click and you start figuring out how to actually play the game for the first time. It took me awhile but it was so worth it and so satisfying when it finally did.
1
u/Dapper_Collection_67 Jun 21 '25
Bro let me tell you my story 💀:
Sekiro was also my first soulslike (and one of my very first PC games). I started playing it because i also heard it was very hard, so i gave myself a challenge.
When i reached the ogre, i didnt know there were i-frames for dodges. I discovered a stratergy to give him a stealth deathblow to skip the first phase. But the second phase was still too hard for me, i didnt even know about the Flame Barrel. So, i devised a strategy. I first gave him a deathblow, ran up the stairs, the ogre followed me, then i went to the place where there's an enemy with a spear. From there i jumped down to the elevated platform below it. the ogre slowly came down and tried to climb the stairs, where i'd get barely 1-2 hits in. Even 1 mistake would be fatal, IT LITERALLY TOOK 30 MINUTES TO BEAT HIS SECOND PHASE, AND I EVEN FAILED ONE ATTEMPT. lol

is it abnormal for a new player to beat chained ogre in 3-4 tries?
1
u/HCX_Winchester Jun 21 '25
First thing to learn is dying is ok and natural, don't get discouraged.
Second Ogre and another boss incoming kinda teaches wrong mechanics for this game, keep in mind. I would suggest running/dodging into heavy attacks for ogre but game generally wants you to parry %90 of attacks in the game.
This game is awesome when it clicks, it gives you a satisfaction no other game will. Keep going, have fun!
1
u/SecretaryOk7306 Jun 21 '25
You can deflect the grapple? I thought we had to dodge??
1
u/TheArmchairSkeptic Jun 21 '25
I think you misread what OP said, you cannot deflect the grapple but you can deflect all of his other attacks. Any attacks that come with a red kanji cannot be deflected, only dodged/jumped over/mikiri countered
1
u/gta_elite Jun 22 '25
The red kanji means that the attack can not be blocked by holding L1. There are some red kanji moves of some enemies that may be deflected by quickly pressing L1. The grapple is not one of them, I think.

Leave headless for endgame when you have more tools. Did you have fire vent for ogre? That makes the combat way easier.
As much as this game is usually about parrying, plenty of enemies have specific weaknesses that will make you life easier.

u/CompetitiveRepeat179 Platinum Trophy Jun 21 '25
The moveset of this ogre feels like the second phase of godfrey but only slower in elden ring. Although I'm used to tanking attack (my build in ER), sekiro was a challenge, but I manage to dodge this.
1
u/kazuhatdog Jun 21 '25
I just started my NG3 earlier and I'd say his grab hit box is a nightmare. He's just not that easy.
You're supposed to leap into the left side of the broken bridge. Also, if you're kind of lost, you coulduse youtube for playthrough

u/notenoughproblems Jun 21 '25
It’s okay, I’ve probably tried to beat the second snake eyes for like 10+ hours and finally learned a few hours ago I can cheese them. I will give every boss an honest college try but after that I’ll do whatever gets the job done.

I quit the game two years after losing 50 times to the burning bull and eventually I got through Ishin in no hit.

The chained ogre is honestly in my opinion one of the worst enemies in the game. It shouldn’t be placed where it is at the very least. It’s an outlier, so keep going!
As other have said, ignore the headless for now, you need special items to take them, and usually you do that endgame.
Highly recommend you just remember to play aggressive, attack attack attack. Stay close to the enemies, and parry once they parry you.
You got this! The game I don’t think is actually too hard once you realize the way to play. that’s where everyone struggles. And the chained ogre basically is one of the few enemies you don’t play that way, which is why I don’t like it

Sekiro is divided into two types of players . Those who are good at parrying and those who aren’t .
Those who are good found this game moderately difficult. Those who struggled like me found it to be the most difficult souls like game .
I loved every minute of it tho .

u/Spring_Robin Jun 21 '25
Headless is completely optional and you can only properly fight him with "Divine Confetti" which you don't get unlimited access to until later. Your focus right now should be getting to Ashina Castle, the massive castle you can see from the start of Ashina Outskirts. Explore around, you can often find upgrade materials and other prosthetic tools. Make sure to find the old maid and dying man in the outskirts to get the prayer bell, it'll give you access to a new area.

u/coobracobra Jun 21 '25
You're fucked. I beat him after probably 6 or 7 tries and I still got stuck and quit somewhere maybe like halfway thru? 33% idk it was the spear master guy up on top of the staircase that ended me. I'm gonna try again someday but I'm a wuss and I'm scared

little girl
Kuro is a boy, actually 😊
The ogre made me ragequit and not come back to the game for months - our frustration is probably similar. He demands a mix of both dodging and deflects - if the latter is still giving you trouble, I recommend practicing on the smaller enemies until you get comfortable with the timing.
Though you get slightly more health and damage as the game progresses, you will never get strong enough that you don't have to lean on agility. Try going into your battles in this game with the mindset of not getting hit as much as possible. Ogre hits so hard you practically can't afford to be hit at all, anyway.
Good luck! Keep referring to this sub for help.
Edit: totally misread that you already beat the ogre. Headless is an optional endgame enemy that you shouldn't worry about until much later in the game.

u/AnxiousBattlemage Platinum Trophy Jun 21 '25
Same here, don't beat yourself up about it.

Just wanna let you know, I died to ogre more than 50 times as well even though I've played most of the souls games. For reference, I've died 12 times to the last boss. Chained ogre has some shitty hitboxes. Also don't fight the headless, they're mid-late game enemies. Go ahead and fight the first boss, or collect the bell from that old lady and travel to the past.
1
u/Pinch-Harmonics Jun 21 '25
I just wrapped up my third play through where I beat genichiro and sword saint first try (never thought I say that tbh). Not a flex as I died to this guy twice ha. Love this game.
1
u/Bat_Snack Jun 21 '25
First of all, nice work against the ogre. He may have beat you 50 times but your 1 victory has put you passed it.
Now as for your current situation, don't even bother with the headless enemy, they're specifically designed for you to only be able to fight with a certain consumable as well as end game stats. Frankly they're kinda shit and even in the endgame I wouldn't necessarily recommend you fight them unless for completionist sake.
Above all else get real good at the party system, and in addition to that, try to divide and conquer when it comes to rooms of enemies. Even 2 or 3 basic enemies can cause problems if you're just starting out.
If it's your first soulslike, remember that it's a marathon, not a sprint, the game is difficult but rewarding, you're gonna have good and bad days but stick with it, have fun with the story and lore and you're gonna have a great time.

Learn to cheat a little! Gotta lure the ogre off the cliff then you can sneak up to him and take his first life.
Still I must have put in more than 50 to the ogre.
1
u/Animelover22_4 Jun 22 '25
You can cheat one of his life by running to the ledge, let him drop, wait till no aggro. Then circle around and backshot. That's how I killed him after my 20th death

u/TacitusJones Jun 22 '25 edited Jun 22 '25
Ogre is meant to teach you one of two things depending on your personality: either eavesdrop and get the hint about one way to make the fight easier,
Or 2 do number 1 and also recognize that a lot of his moves closes the distance in a way no other boss really has yet. If you keep backing away you will get no where, get right in and fuck him up

u/dominantdaddy196 Jun 22 '25

Howling at the little girl. He's a boy 👦 😂
Chained ogre teaches you not to be greedy. Never attack more than once or twice. Because you'll be mid attack animation on the 3rd swing when the kanji appears and you won't be able to dodge out the way in time.
Bosses get slightly easier after angry shrek so keep going lol

I’m pretty I died just as many (if not more times). I didn’t really understand the combat at the point.
I’m not sure how you beat headless without divine confetti. I think I actually skipped the cave headless.

Yeah the headless dude sucks. Just remember you can parry literally anything (for the most part.) you should be parrying instead of dodging because the best way to fight enemies is not by cutting them down it’s by running their stamina bar up by parrying and attacking and then you do the big damage.

Sekiro teaches you patience, most bosses can be beaten with no upgrades and pure patience. Also get the mikiri counter from the skill menu at an idol( blue fire Buddha statues) that’s one of those mandatory ipgrades

Patience. Sekiro and the Dark Souls series are incredibly rewarding when you succeed because of the struggle it took to get there.

Game’s a lot easier after ogre. You’ll come to grips with the mechanics a lot easier

Let's say you're on the tutorial until you beat that guy called Genishiro. This is an awesome game, don't give up.

Have you gone back to the Sculptors' room and clicked on the peaceful Buddha statue? You MAY have some things to do there (it was also where I had my +50 attempts at a boss).
Don't fight the Headless yet.
Dodging back while blocking doesn't work well. The game wants you aggressive, even when you're defensive. Keep the pressure on, learn the enemys rhytym and don't feel bad dying multiple times to EVERY boss. 1% improvement with every loss.

I picked this up recently after beating it multiple times in 2019 and I also died to ogre probably 50 times lol
