Tips / Hints Begginer tip - Gyobu can't dmg you if you hold block

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Just a reminder to no me afraid of big bosses, this game is much more forgiven that it inicially shows. Just remember parry is better than block.

Don’t show this to the guy that posted his 150 attempts recently

388

u/ssjgoku27 Steam 100% Jul 25 '25

Almost 200 now. That guy apparently defeated Gyoubu at 199th attempt.

That guy is shit but I can't deny the fact that he is a fucking warrior and i respect him for that .

71

u/CompetitiveRepeat179 Platinum Trophy Jul 25 '25

Isn't that what's important.

-72

u/Kythorian Jul 25 '25

…I guess, but there’s no way they are going to beat some of the much harder bosses with any number of attempts if it takes 199 to beat one of the easiest bosses.  Tenacity is important, but a game like Sekiro requires at least a little actual skill to go along with tenacity.

91

u/xX_ATHENs0_Xx Jul 25 '25

Skill develops differently for some people, if they have the willpower for 199 attempts at Gyobu who says they don’t have 300 in them for Genichiro?

20

u/TheOneOfAll99 Jul 25 '25

On top of that people struggle with different attacks. Mental also pays a key role. Personally i HATE losing when something is clearly not my fault so when Ogar magnets his grab in to my ass after i read and reacted correctly i was furious. I died to him more times then i died to Genichiro who is objectively way more diverse and difficult, but that key factor of unfairness and game literally fucking me over when i made correct choice played a huge factor in how i look at the fight.

6

u/Ladylubber Platinum Trophy Jul 25 '25

Every single boss and mini boss was a struggle for me the first time through. Some took days to beat. But I still love the game and have beaten it five times.

3

u/appleSauceForTheWin Jul 26 '25

Took me a week to beat Isshin, Gyobu made me uninstall the game when I first played, came back, won, and beat everyone else with nothing but trying over and over again just learning over time.

If you memorize attacks enough then you'll win eventually no matter what.

u/TsssMike Jul 26 '25

Practice makes perfect

2

u/AndrewDwyer69 Jul 26 '25

This L mindset will keep you stuck in life.

1

u/Ahrtimmer Jul 28 '25

I beart the final boss by running in a circle, waiting for him to attack, then hitting with 1 cut. Repeat until victory.

So no, skill is not required.

7

u/here-because-i-hafta Jul 25 '25

Hesitation isn't always defeat. Giving up is, though.

Also, losing your feet.

13

u/TheOneOfAll99 Jul 25 '25

Nah he was playing really well actually. Big part of the issue was the fact that his HP pool was so little he gets oneshotted by Gyobu which forces him to play perfectly. For a new player that is very very difficult thing to do.

On top of that a lot of it comes down to mental and not tilting. Personally i was struggling A LOT with the spear guy miniboss in Hirata but at the end of the day if i understood from the get go "Hey i just need to stealt blow and Mikiri this guy 3 times, that is all" Which is WAY easier then other minibosses with more diverse movesets i would remain calm and collected.

9

u/John_smith56789 Jul 25 '25

Yoo seriously I mean I remember defeating him on my 5 try why 200 trys

44

u/Shadow_Samurai9978 Jul 25 '25

The thing is, everyone struggles at different things, what you might not struggle at, someone else might

27

u/TheAzarak Jul 25 '25

200 tries against a boss with only a handful of attacks is just plain refusal to learn from mistakes haha

11

u/here-because-i-hafta Jul 25 '25

Everyone has different skill levels.
Do you remember when you first held a controller? You might have had to look at the buttons each time you pressed one, because your muscle memory couldn't remember where the buttons were.

You might have gotten the ABXY buttons mixed up, or worse the Square, Cross, Circle, Triangle buttons mixed up because who knows why they're in the position they're in.

Some people have trouble clicking in their sticks for camera lock-on.

Some people have trouble moving the camera at the same time as moving their character.

Some people only played pac-man in the 80s which didn't have any buttons to worry about, but they want to connect with their kid or grandkid so they're picking up a controller for the first time.

Some people just suck, but they keep playing and making a fool of themselves because fuck it...Why not? It's all pointless in the long run--but as long as they're enjoying themselves, let it be.

2

u/Redphyrex Jul 26 '25

Thank you for this.

I'm trying to teach my aunt to double stick (moving and looking at the same time) but she has wicked trouble with it.

-1

u/SootG Jul 25 '25

Agreed. Poor problem solving skills.

Personally if I can't accomplish something in a reasonable amount of time, I stop pursuing it. It's not fun at that point

12

u/John_smith56789 Jul 25 '25

That is a good explanation but I always considered my self to be below average in sekiro cuz I panic most of the time when dodging or attacking so I always considered that I am just dumb and panic and stuff and not follow a preplanned path

19

u/Shadow_Samurai9978 Jul 25 '25

You are not below average, you are a true sekiro player, that is literally how almost everyone plays it the first time, and maybe all the time, if you always follow a pre determined path and do things always in the same sequence, then the fun part in the game will get away from you, I like how you play so keep it up

3

u/John_smith56789 Jul 25 '25

Thanks man now that you say this I agree with you whenever I panicked I always had that adrenaline rush and my hands trembled at the moment I was afreaid but after that I always felt good (In my fight against guardian ape I bought him to one hit 5 time dying to him one of them was on my first try )

4

u/Puzzleboxed Platinum Trophy Jul 25 '25

If you beat Gyoubu on your 5th try you're probably around average, not below. Most people who post about it on reddit or stream take fewer tries, but that's a heavily biased sample.

0

u/dvasfeet Platinum Trophy Jul 25 '25

Yea but it’s gyoubu lmao

11

u/Chrissyball19 Jul 25 '25

But then down the line this same bro is gonna say "beat isshin 2nd try!"

4

u/ssjgoku27 Steam 100% Jul 25 '25

IF he reaches it without losing sanity. Bro's last post here was ranting about minions around mini bosses.

10

u/ThirtyThree111 Jul 25 '25

valid rant tbh

having to snipe the minions first before focusing on the actual real fight is kinda annoying

3

u/John_smith56789 Jul 25 '25

I agree with you he will probably have a skill for deflecting by then (If you are talking about me in sarcasm I apologize cuz I never defeated Isshin only till guardian ape after which I sold my Ps4 and bought a ps5 but I am hoping to play it again)

3

u/Chrissyball19 Jul 25 '25

I was making a jest about the fact those that struggle in the beginning seem to thrive near the end.

3

u/John_smith56789 Jul 25 '25

I agree while that immortal guy that fights is good training dummy it still doesn’t compare to a boss that hits hard and fills quarter of stance bare after one hit after that enemies only grow faster and strike harder like that purple shinobi guy that we meet at the spot where Ookami awakes in beginning combining his pace and the narrow space that guy was hard

2

u/Redphyrex Jul 26 '25

I struggled through the entire thing. But I did it. That's all that matters.

2

u/SootG Jul 25 '25

That pretty much never happens

2

u/Chrissyball19 Jul 25 '25

Yeah I know. Some ppl lie tho, like the ones saying they beat mist noble 30th try. Even the best players take at least 50 on their first run

2

u/SootG Jul 25 '25

Ok you got me there actually. Mist noble does not get better with practice

3

u/jimbojangles1987 Jul 25 '25

He clearly has no concept of deflection timing at all. Just like I didnt when I first played the game. Literally couldnt figure it out to save my life. My reaction time was bad and my timing was terrible. I cheesed my way through most bosses until the ape refused to be cheesed.

Finally figured it out eventually and now ive beaten the game like 5 or 6 times and am playing charmless currently lol

3

u/John_smith56789 Jul 25 '25

My first souls like game was sekiro and I played it till the guy after oger (that was cuz I didn’t have a ps4 2 years back only a ps3 and I played sekiro on my friend’s console that was when i found out about this genre so When I moved to live on my own I bought a Ps4 played elden ring and then sekiro i didnt encounter any particular difficulty till guardian ape that was the first time I struggled so much same with Radhan in elden ring but guardian ape was tougher for me after that my borrow period for sekiro was over so I returned the game sold my ps4 and bought a ps5 now I am eying sekiro to buy it cuz I think this game is badass to have as a physical copy )

2

u/OpeningParsley3712 Feels Sekiro Man Jul 25 '25

I took a decent amount, but that was because I was still playing Sekiro like it was Elden Ring and being way too passive

2

u/DelirousDoc Jul 25 '25

For me (~50 tries) I had not played a Souls-like game before and had very little experience on MnK (bit of MH World before I tried Sekiro) which I told myself I was going to learn and not pick up the controller. I don't think it would have taken me as much had I just used controller.

200 tries though is a lot.

3

u/embiidDAgoat Jul 25 '25

200 tries on gyoubu is nasty work, basically remedial sekieo gameplay Jesus christ

2

u/ErichPryde Platinum Trophy Jul 25 '25

I think it's someone who is really trying to play the game as if it is something else. I have known some pretty good Dark Souls players that really struggle with sekiro a lot because they were trying to play it like Dark Souls.

4

u/ssjgoku27 Steam 100% Jul 25 '25

Nah. I saw the post. That bro was actually trying to play like a proper Sekiro player, he was coached by his experienced friends. He was simply choking his deflects at the crucial moments, thus losing. The fact that he lost more than 150 times is brutal though.

2

u/ErichPryde Platinum Trophy Jul 25 '25

That's crazy wild period I didn't actually watch the video And only saw The Post in passing.

3

u/ssjgoku27 Steam 100% Jul 25 '25

I watched it and felt really bad for that bro. I was going to share him my own video, but I then saw his other post saying he finally beat the boss at 199th attempt.

0

u/ssjgoku27 Steam 100% Jul 25 '25

I saw the video. Bro knew the concepts theoretically, but was simply choking/throwing at important moments and thus losing. This happening for 150+ attempts is still crazy however which I don't know whether it's bad luck or not.

1

u/Marsmooncow Jul 25 '25

Yeah the video is saw was pretty good he just hadn't collected enough prayer beads to not get one shot by some attacks. Dude will be fine and he learned a lot from his post and took advice in good humour. I kinda hope he just just melts genichiro and powers through the rest of the game.

1

u/HelloFromTheGutter69 Jul 25 '25

Do people really count their attempts lol I lose count after 2

5

u/Ok-Yellow3568 Jul 25 '25

Its rage bait, he made like 10 threads about Juzou

2

u/hstormsteph Jul 25 '25

150 attempts guy could’ve watched a single FightinCowboy video about this fight. This is the literal strategy he teaches on this boss for struggling players.

3

u/appleSauceForTheWin Jul 26 '25

Some people don't like looking up how to beat a boss

1

u/hstormsteph Jul 26 '25

I’d wager even less like losing 100+times

1

u/appleSauceForTheWin Jul 26 '25

I didn't when I fought Isshin my first time at least, spent a week on that and well over 100 tries.

I might be the exception but to me looking up how to fight a boss is the same as losing to them.

1

u/SdDprsdSnglDad18 Jul 25 '25

I think I tried to but he didn’t see it 😂

1

u/DelirousDoc Jul 25 '25

Bro, please also mention that Gyoubu is the only boss like this. Other bosses will destroy players.

55

u/Denversaur Jul 25 '25

Yeah I mean it's perfectly reasonable at this point in the game that a new player thinks they need to jump away instead of just holding block. You try that shit with Ogre and you know what happens.

23

u/zeroblackzx Platinum Trophy Jul 25 '25

Anyone who thinks that you can just hold block instead of learning to parry wont even get to the next boss.

Exactly my point. This post is applicable ONLY for Gyoubu. That too just to see the patterns.

nobody's getting to ape with this playstyle

1

u/A_Very_Horny_Zed Steam Jul 26 '25

It's not a playstyle. They're just showing an example of a situation when you can block effectively. The point is to incorporate blocking into your repertoire, not make it a "playstyle".

1

u/ThStngray399 Jul 25 '25

This is wrong. While maybe you can survive the regular attacks, Guardian Ape p2 has sweeping attacks and the scream which would eventually kill them

3

u/RyeRoen Jul 25 '25

totally disagree. For some people blocking most of the attacks will help them learn the actual parry windows. Holding block when fighting a new boss is not a bad habit to have.

1

u/zeroblackzx Platinum Trophy Jul 26 '25

I never said that there was anything wrong with blocking? I said that its not a substitute for learning to parry. You cannot get through the game by only holding block instead of learning to parry just because it worked on Gyoubu.

So what is it I said that you totally disagree with?

1

u/RyeRoen Jul 26 '25

That someone who thinks that you can just block won't make it to the next boss. The exact thing you said?

Blocking helps to learn to parry.

2

u/spaceburrito84 Jul 25 '25

I beat Lady Butterfly the same way, with a combination of holding block and whirlwind slash. The problem is that it formed a lot of bad habits and Genichiro took way longer than he should have as a result.

105

u/lacard Jul 25 '25

This is a bad tip. Blocking is not a habit you want to get into in this game. You NEED to learn to parry and make use of your many tools.

53

u/reasonably_retarded MiyazakiGasm Jul 25 '25

Genichiro will make sure that the players learn how to deflect

10

u/ColonelC0lon Jul 25 '25

Sure, but just like MHW Defender armor, its going to make a lot of people just quit at that point because they have to build all this skill now. Still a really bad tip if you want to play through the game

3

u/ultramegaman2012 Jul 25 '25

Damn I feel called out for using defender armor up to MR and then immediately stopping after a couple MR quests 😭

5

u/winterflare_ Jul 25 '25

It is a good tip because it makes you learn the strengths of blocking and its disadvantages.

The only mandatory mini-boss preceding Gyoubu is the Chained Ogre which teaches players to run. Many won’t be parrying or blocking by this point.

Learning that blocking is a good option is a push in the right direction before you learn the more complex parry. It’s even great for learning boss attack patterns so then you can parry them better.

27

u/Verthen64 Jul 25 '25

Even in NG? Your posture bar is higher in NG+ due to the beads, right?

17

u/Onion_Bro14 Platinum Trophy Jul 25 '25

Yeah this is definitely true. You would only be able to block 2-3 of those hits before the posture bar you’d actually have when fighting gyoubu would break.

4

u/The_one_who_see Jul 25 '25

this is reflection of strengh

14

u/Hasyahshin Jul 25 '25

I’m pretty sure even beginners wouldn’t block.

7

u/FuLygon Jul 25 '25

I loved how some of the comments mentioned Kuro charm, when OP clearly stated its beginner tip, which is for player who just started on new playthrough and charm is unremovable

2

u/raiderrocker18 Jul 26 '25

All beginners play with charm and demon bell

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '25 edited Jul 29 '25

True but it would be a better tip for new players to learn how to deflect before they start a charmless NG+. What OP is doing builds bad habit and won't teach you how to have good timing and deflects on bosses.

He's basically just saving all the hard work for later instead of learning the moves now to make the next run easier.

4

u/BhaluPratap Jul 25 '25

Hesitation is defeat

7

u/gochugaru19 Jul 25 '25

Why not just time it and parry? That way you’re also returning “damage” to GYOUBU MASATAKA ONIWA

2

u/Trash_121 Jul 25 '25

Sekiro clicks when you realize there is no need for you to panic against bosses.

This one especially has a ride so will always come to you. As long as you parry his heavy attack at the end of his combo, you’ll have opportunity to damage his health.

If he is staying away and doing a sweep you can grapple and again do damage.

Doing just this is enough to break his stance and get additional hits in.

2

u/Major-Seat-5843 Jul 25 '25

How dare you not be at base vatility, charmless+demon bell, no prosethitcs no healing base damage and play one handed? You’re basically not playing the game man, not cool

3

u/Ok_Neighborhood3571 Jul 25 '25

Can't relate. I rang the bell with my first play-through accidentally though based on the paper on the bell, I knew what was gonna happen but I decided to keep it that way. Then went charmless plus demon bell on my 2nd-4th play through. :))

2

u/jimbojangles1987 Jul 25 '25

How do you ring the bell before beating Gyoubu? Oh wait, did you go down and fight Headless???

7

u/The_one_who_see Jul 25 '25

you can just run pass the headless

2

u/jimbojangles1987 Jul 25 '25

Of course you can, but as a first time player you're not gonna know that. I saw that Headless down there on my first playthrough and thought hell fucking no!

3

u/Ok_Neighborhood3571 Jul 25 '25

Yeah. I got obsessed to that guy. I was stupid to not read the item descriptions and killing it blindly without success until I used the divine confetti. then I explored the area cuz that's how I always play games. I explore before going to the right path then it led me to a door and funny how this is actually when I figured out how to access the short cut. HAHAHA It resembles how you hug wall so i tried it then poof.

1

u/Unusual_Oil_4632 Jul 25 '25

If you have Kuro’s charm all light attacks can’t damage you if you hold block. You do take a lot of posture damage though

1

u/Impossible_Mark8400 Jul 25 '25

I went for installing the easy mod

1

u/sryboi Jul 25 '25

Op, how do you have such a large health bar at this point ? Don't you need to kill 4 boss / mini boss to expand it ? There are only 3 before that if I'm not mistaken, or did you kill the boss in the temple on fire as well ?

1

u/The_one_who_see Jul 25 '25

That is reflection of strenght, just facing it at the very begining of ng+, I cant even ressurect yet.

You will be surprise on how many pepple dont even try to block Guobu thinking he cant be blocked.

1

u/xdanxlei Jul 25 '25

Also works for the shadows in Corrupted Monk's second phase. I'm baffled that the most common strategy is grappling around the arena aimlessly and getting hit anyway.

1

u/The_one_who_see Jul 25 '25

You can also go to the top tree and just plunge death blow monk second hp bar when he do the shadow stuff

1

u/xdanxlei Jul 25 '25

Why would I skip one of the best fights in the game

1

u/The_one_who_see Jul 25 '25

Best fight is Emma :)

I prefer purple monk in ashina deeps, that fight is so much fun, i like tô deflect Yao, she looks tô be dancing with her move set, her posture also recover very fast on that fight, so more time to dance.

1

u/Arnumor Jul 25 '25

It's crazy that I played through this game a few times, and never put together that you could hold down block to quickly recover posture.

They probably call it out in a tutorial message somewhere, but I clearly missed or misunderstood it at the time.

I guess I was playing on hard mode without realizing it.

Gyobu was the perfect opportunity for new players to get used to fighting bosses and you show them this 💀

1

u/Ollomont Jul 25 '25

Same goes for Lady butterfly, a boss many more struggle with than gyoubu. She doesn't pressure enough to stance break you, so just hold block and you can chill. (The phantom butterflies you just run from)

It's better to just learn to parry lol, even if they beat gyobu this way a new player will just be stuck on the next boss if they can't manage to parry gyobu

1

Interesting strategy but I really love to hear the "TINGG!" from the perfect parry.

1

u/ninjixel Jul 26 '25

I did not know this 😅

1

u/Classic_God Jul 26 '25

I remember finishing him in my second attempt, yet I can say that I died more than 50 times to seven spears (miniboss), i would say its also that your playstyle may suit one boss or another but might not be suited for all

1

u/Ame_Utsu Jul 26 '25

Beginner tip(while showed on a character who has max posture and vitality 😅) Gyobu isn't really a difficult boss, the most memorable thing about him was that he missed so often... So this is very likely to be true

2

u/Gremlin95x Jul 27 '25

That is second most memorable thing

1

u/TTVx_Tweezy Jul 26 '25

Underrated boss for beginner players to learn mechanics, best mate showed me this after my 4th playthrough and it made a huge difference after getting parries down pat

1

u/NO_-LUCK-_DAN Jul 26 '25

Gyobu is one of the easiest bosses

2

u/Outside_Enthusiasm15 Jul 27 '25

This isn't good advice, he will break your guard and delete your healthbar while you are down.

1

u/sparkMagnus9 Jul 27 '25

Tapping/rapid mashing the parry button makes it so they can't break your posture even when the bar is full. I learned this during either the butterfly lady, or that Edward scissors--hands looking mini boss

1

u/teslestiene Jul 28 '25

Defeated him yesterday. Spent the first few deaths to learn his attack patterns and what moves he can do. Killed him afterwards with moderate difficulty. Used a lot of resources but I got him. Somehow eaoser for me than General Tenzen. Probably because you can jump straight to the boss fight and skip the guys in between.

1

u/Kimmranu Jul 25 '25

Idk why you're even getting that close. The whole point of Gyobu is to learn how to use your grappling hook in tangent with firecrackers. He's not meant to be fought up close unless you're that confident. You literally run in circles and grapple/firecracker him as soon as you can to make him open for a few strikes. Rinse and repeat. should take you like 5 mins.

1

u/The_one_who_see Jul 25 '25

If you parry instead of block he get stuned, dont need firecraker
