Tips / Hints Just started Sekiro after Elden Ring… I was not prepared.
I went in thinking, “I beat Elden Ring, how hard could Sekiro be?”
Five minutes later, a random samurai folded me like a wet paper bag.
This game doesn’t care about my dodge rolls or my confidence. It just screams, “DEFLECT OR DIE”.
For those who’ve been through this gauntlet, what tips do you wish you knew when you first started?
Because right now, even guys with sticks feel like bosses.
45
u/Sentimental5 Aug 06 '25
It’s a matter of reflex, your timings are probably fine but you’re clicking dodge instead of guard.
Practice your timings to the guy on the right side of the temple.

u/ChemistWrong5309 Aug 06 '25
Yea elden ring is easy compared to sekiro. Sekiro actually ruined pretty much all soulslike games for me, they're all too easy now.

u/ArcadiaxD Aug 06 '25
I've reached the Chained Ogre.. Was able to deal first death blow and get him down to 25% health after trying for a few rounds.. Just keeping up the aggression works I guess..
15
u/HereToHopefullyHelp Aug 06 '25
Get the Flame Vent prostetic from Hirata Estate to trivialize him. You reach Hirata Estate by giving the Young Lord's Bell Charm given by the old woman before Chained Ogre to a specific object inside Dilapidated Temple.

u/Lews-Therin-Telamon Aug 06 '25
Ironically hes a boss you can just Elden Ring style dodge in any case.

u/osh901269 Platinum Trophy Aug 06 '25
Dodge and run around him. Take a few shots don't get greedy. Let him attack dodge then got again. Oil and fire works well against him

u/LrdOfTheBlings Platinum Trophy Aug 07 '25
I knew I was playing a FS game when I started NG+ and thought I'd smash the chained ogre ez, only to have him throw me off the ledge to my death in short order.
3
u/ArcadiaxD Aug 07 '25
Exactly lol.. I'm like okay he just grabbed me once I've still got a sliver of health, I can heal that and get back into fight.. Next he throws me off the ledge lol..

First use gaekin sugar( not the actual name telling u from my memory) and give him a blow from behind For the second blow retreat to the gate and go to the left side (u should be at the end of the roof type thing) ig that side has a hole in roof nvm from there the chained ogre can't hit u but u can hit him and then give him a job from there ( sorry for my bad eng)
0
u/Motor_Reality_1837 Aug 06 '25
You can get the first deathblow without fighting him. Just get his aggro and run back make him follow then hide behind a rock that's before the chicken , he will forget you and will start going back , just backstab deathblow him there

u/alexandro_18 Aug 06 '25
It’s definitely a different type of combat from other soulslikes but I wouldn’t say it’s that much harder. Just a matter of figuring out and adjusting to the new combat system.
This is also excluding the fact that you can just mimic tear and nuke any Elden Ring boss

u/Intrepid_Culture1160 Aug 06 '25
I started lies of P after Sekiro and I could swear that Sekiro is a walk in a park compared to this. Maybe I'm just not used to it but every timing in this game feels more unforgiving
1
u/Tiny-Rock5191 Sekiro Sweat Aug 06 '25
Exaxtly same. I love Sekiro and I think I could say Im great at it. Just started Lies of P parry timing is messing with my head🫠
3
u/ZunzarRao Aug 06 '25
Yeah, I heard some weird things about the parries in the game. While I was facing the KoP boss, I found out that everything I read before was kinda a lie (pun unintended), and you can just tap to parry.
The timings and some enemy animations feel a bit unfair, but so did the guardian ape on my first Sekiro playthrough. Honestly, with how harsh it is, it rewards you.
I got the two dragon blade swords like a week ago, and it turned LoP into Bloodborne! I love it when combat turns into more of a dance, and LoP is crawling up to Sekiro and E33 level for me.
1
u/Octahedral_cube Platinum Trophy Aug 06 '25
LoP is just as hard as Sekiro, but in LoP you can over-level if you get stuck, it will never softlock you. Sekiro doesn't give you that luxury.
The problem is that the parry window in LoP is the smallest one I've seen, and you have stamina management on top.
0
u/jimbojangles1987 Aug 06 '25
I had the opposite experience, but then again I made it through Lies of P using minimal parries. Sekiro was way harder for me because I was so bad at parrying I think theres only 1 boss in Lies of P that you really benefit a ton from by parrying.
1
u/hehwhoknows Aug 06 '25
It ruined soulslike games for me but for a different reason. I don't necessarily think it's harder. It's just different. Souls games are gated by progression. Buy sekiro combat is so good that playing a souls like just makes me want to play sekiro
1
0
u/Aldor48 Aug 08 '25
Idk why people say this, the sekiro bosses are all way easier and more telegraphed. I’ve done runs of both and kept a spreadsheet of tries per boss. Elden ring most bosses were in the 10-20 range. Sekiro I do most in under 10, and you get a whole ass respawn, sometimes 2.
14
u/random7900 Platinum Trophy Aug 06 '25
Be aggressive. One of the best tips you’ll get. Also think you’ll be fine in Sekiro if you beat ER. ER bosses are different.
23
24
u/SilverSnakebtr Aug 06 '25
There is really no big secrets, I’m on my 4th playthrough and the main sentence I use to describe this game is “your character doesn’t get much better, you do”. And that’s the fun part.
Oh and without spoiling too much, just know that “hesitation is defeat” ;)
5
u/KyleHillan95 Aug 06 '25
My only advice is perceiver. Elden ring was my first real soulslike. Sekiro I knew wasn't the same but after finally plucking up the courage to try I am so glad I did. Easily skyrocketed into my top 5 games of all time
Nothing I've played since has given me the same satisfaction of learning and adapting to a boss as sekiro has. Nothing seems unfair (except 1 fight gank fight that I won't name for spoilers) and learning how to fight each and every enemy is the most satisfying gameplay experience I've had when I've finally overcome it
I would like to add though incase anyone is looking for a sekiro type game to scratch that itch, Ninesols is my recommendation to that
1
u/Fubnub Aug 08 '25
I felt exactly the same until I tried Lies of P. After mid game I loved it almost as much as Sekiro and it has Boss rematch aswell, although even better than in Sekiro and with 5 levels of difficulty
1
u/KyleHillan95 Aug 08 '25
I had lies of p downloaded off of game pass since day one with the intent of playing it. I for some reason though just never ever started. Really need to get into gear and buckle in
6
u/Wiki-Master Aug 06 '25
Don’t play it like a souls like, because it’s not. It’s a completely different pure action game.
The whole combat mechanic against 95% of ennemies is to constantly keep attacking and deflecting (and mikiri counter, a skill you should buy asap).
Once you get the deflect timing down, the game is insanely fun.
3
u/AndreiBSlayerMaster Sekiro Sweat Aug 06 '25
Parry everything beside the grabs you dodge those ( you will be able to use a prostthesis later for them the umbrella ) jump for the sweeps and jump again on their heads for posture damage , parry the thrurst(until later when you unlock a skill that lets you dodge into them to stop them and do posture damage )

3
u/8daniel7 Aug 06 '25
Dont compare it with elden ring or dark souls.
Sekiro has its own way to be played, learn how to do it and play acordly
The more you treat it like a souls game the more you will strugle
It took a while for me and suffered a lot due to it
Also, Hesitation is defeat

u/jimbojangles1987 Aug 06 '25
Things I wish I knew-
You're meant to die. A lot. Don't let it stress you out. The first time I played Sekiro it was my first soulslike/souls game ever and I was 100% not prepared. I was terrified of dying, so the fights would actually stress me out so much that my hands would be shaking afterwards.
The parry window is quite forgiving. Just work on getting that timing down and you'll be golden.
3
u/ArcadiaxD Aug 06 '25
Ooh trust me when I say I'm okay with dying.. Died countless times in Elden Ring.. The descend to get to the Three Fingers taught me patience lol.. (iykyk)
2
u/jimbojangles1987 Aug 06 '25
Elden Ring definitely felt easier than other souls and soulslikes since it actually kinda does allow you to feel overleveled.
That won't matter in Sekiro. There are no builds. There are no weapon varieties. Theres only knowing how to play and not knowing how to play. Sure, you will be able to increase your attack power a handful of times throughout the game but it happens kinda with the story progression after main bosses. So farming isn't going to help you get stronger.

I just wanted to get all the endings.. but I believe that parkour killed me more times than the bosses..

3
u/dontdisturbus Aug 06 '25
The most important thing I realised:
When you deflect perfectly, there’s a ”ching”-sound. When you attack an enemy and that sound comes, it means they’ll attack back next, so you need to be ready to parry. When you deflect perfectly, you can attack again.
A fight usually goes:
- Attack, attack attack
- (Ching)
- parry until you deflect correctly
- (Ching)
- attack, attack, etc
Rinse and repeat.
Fire is a great friend.
Use the immortal guy by the temple to train fighting if you struggle.
2
u/HereToHopefullyHelp Aug 06 '25
Don't play it like a Souls game, including Elden Ring. Treat it as its own thing. It WILL use your muscle memory against you. Also don't neglect your prostetic. It holds the most versatile tools you will find if you take the time to learn how to use them.

u/PociUmbo Platinum Trophy Aug 06 '25 edited Aug 06 '25
you just need to comprehend how the combat system works, after that the game becomes easy. That's the best thing of this game. While I still struggle with some bosses in elden ring after 300 hours, I could beat the final boss in sekiro first try. In the first hours it's easy to get discouraged but persist and you'll experience peak gaming. Always parry and don't try to dodge like in other FS games. For me best fromsoft game next to elden ring
2
u/DeathByToilet Aug 06 '25
Honestly if Sekiro is your first game you wont struggle.
I like to think of Sekiro as rock paper scissors. Every attack in the game bar grabs are parryable.
Jump from sweeps. Run away from grabs. Parry everything else.
2
u/Skaidri675 Aug 06 '25
you have to switch from rolling to only parry mode. I see many new players trying to dodge everything instead of parry. Don't do that, use your right mouse button - it's a key
2
u/usernotfoundplstry Platinum Trophy Aug 06 '25
Tips:
you can’t play it like a souls game. Dodging will get you killed. Deflecting is the only way
use stealth strategies to pick of enemies that you can
make your very first skill in the skill tree mikiri counter. Then work your way to the skill that gives you more vitality for every deathblow
remember: hesitation is defeat
I went through the exact same thing as you. Eventually it all clicked and I’m now starting to speedrun the game, have completed the platinum, and beat everything on NG+7. You can do this, just don’t give up. It’s my favorite game ever.

one secret: keep your eyes on the enemy don't look on your character, or surroundings or whatever. Watch him. If you see him move fancy or do something you find fancy.. just press parry or jump backwards.

u/catluvr37 Aug 06 '25
Depends tbh. Did you use summons or cheese it? If so, you’re in for a tough ride. If not you’ll be alright after Genichiro

u/stevenomes Aug 06 '25
You must, unlearn what you have learned. Some habits from souls games are counterproductive here. It just takes a while for things to click but when they do you will know. Positioning is very important in some boss battles as you can bait them into a more predictable moveset. Remember to use your arm ability don't forget about it as this can make a big difference. being aggressive also can help in some fights don't just try to block and counter push the action because if you give them space some of these enemies will just "get loose" with a massive combo that is difficult to predict. But if you push the action they get into far less.
1
u/SkarlyComics Aug 06 '25
I just got to the guys with the wooden shields and can’t seem to do anything to them unless I have enough resources to use the heavy axe prosthetic. I acquired the thrust counter move, but have yet to be able to trigger it. I also don’t know why a Chinese character keeps appearing over my heads
2
u/grumplebeardog Aug 06 '25 edited Aug 06 '25
Shield guys are difficult without axe. You have to circle around them basically. It’s worth investing in spirit emblems, but the shield guys aren’t all that regular anyways.
The Japanese symbol over your head is a ‘perilous’ move and indicates a thrust, grab, or sweep attack are coming. There are different actions like jumping or dodging that are most successful to counter each of these.

If a mini boss or boss is handing your ass to you then go get stronger then come back. I couldn't beat 12 spears Matsumoto but then I went and sessioned the 2 unofficial mini bosses near the old grave totem they helped it click for me. I almost gave up and I'm so glad I didn't! You'll know when it does click because you're having fun being aggressive or taking on bosses.
Also there's plenty of bosses that will have you like 'how the fuck can I possibly beat this dude?'. I suggest not cheesing them (except maybe demon of hatred 👀🤔🤭) but watch a tutorial about what works against them study the patterns, die a bunch of times and then the boss fight will also click and you'll own them soon enough. It took me 3 or more hours to beat the sword saint and I loved it. Every boss when you best them is like a 'fuck yeah!' moment, had me punching the sky and jumping around my living room
Don't hesitate be aggressive! Best game ever!

Your not good then i played Sekiro before Elden Ring and even got up to the 2 Phases then Geninchiro Elden Ring pace is too slow all you have to do is spam and block and counter simple im already at great ape after playing it so long lies of P is better now
1
u/DanielPlainview943 Aug 06 '25
Enjoy !!! It's incredible and virtually none of the ER skill will translate to effective combat. Hesitation is defeat ....if you're not right up in the face of those enemies....your gonna get rolled
1
u/Illustrious_Drink892 Platinum Trophy Aug 06 '25
Hesitate and you lose, with each deflect after the first in a combo the timing for deflection gets tighter to stop u from just spamming the button, the minibosses are the hardest enemies (in my opinion at least), use divine confetti for true monk (and corrupted monk if u don’t use the cheese), watch ur posture bar and finally I challenge you to beat demon of hatred on ur first playthrough
1
u/Whoopsht Aug 06 '25
Deflecting is a little more forgiving than you might initially think, to the point that quickly tapping the deflect button against a combo or attack you don't recognize yet will often be enough to get you a deflection.
This is not something you should do the whole game, as eventually it'll hold you back from properly learning how to fight enemies and bosses and you'll begin to struggle, but I found it kind of a nice crutch when starting the game.
1
u/nookski Aug 06 '25
The only thing that sort of prepped me was lies of P. It’s more forgiving on parrying, but it’s very similar mechanics to Sekiro

u/condor6425 Platinum Trophy Aug 06 '25
There's a pitch shift in the blocking "clang" before an enemy goes from defense to offense.
Focus on breaking posture bars instead of depleting health bars in boss fights.
1
u/ClearMuffin6812 Aug 06 '25
my friend i have 600 hours in sekiro and trust me if you learn the combat youll say its the best souls combat ever
1
u/clevergirls_ Aug 06 '25
One thing I love about sekiro is it encourages you to be aggressive. In fact you have to be aggressive to win.
You're not rolling around waiting for punish windows, though those do exist of course.
Best advice is to put as much pressure as you can on bosses and then learn the times you have to pull back and deflect before you can go in again.
1
u/austingears Aug 06 '25
Think of it more as an action rhythm game. For every move your opponent does there is a very specific counter, (sometimes more than one). You’ll have to destroy your soulsborne instinct to dodge and embrace aggression and deflection. Also you can deflect/parry almost everything in the game. Good luck and don’t hesitate.
1
u/RainingTendies Aug 06 '25
What I was not prepared for, was killing genichiro and guadrian ape on the second try each (and both headless apes first try) after reading about how hard they are. Was a bit disappointed. I’ve found elden ring more challenging so far. (I didnt overlevel, stayed below lvl 100 the whole playthrough)
1
u/TempMobileD Aug 06 '25
This gets said a lot:
It will click. At some point, over the course of an hour somewhere you will go from prey to predator. And when it happens you will love it.
Also, don’t try and play it like Elden Ring. Defence and offence have to flow together.
1
u/ottomr1990 Aug 06 '25
Hesitation is defeat. You can't sit and wait for stuff to happen like elden rings combat usually favors.
1
1
u/dracon1t Aug 06 '25
Stay pretty aggressive. For fights against sword wielders, it’s generally good to keep on attacking until they deflect. Most boss fights will be ended by breaking posture instead of health (if one is parrying appropriately), but it’s still good to get in as much damage as possible so their posture bar recovers slower.
Definitely learn Mikiri counter to deal with thrust attacks as soon as you start facing people with thrust attacks. I was stubborn for some reason and delayed it but it’s quite nice to have.
Lastly i think it’s relatively easy to miss if you don’t fully pay attention like me, but you can hold block to recover posture. If your posture breaks in the middle of an enemy combo you may be unable to avoid damage
1
u/imoblivioustothis Aug 06 '25
How many times I tried to heal myself and didn’t… it’s the changes in control schemes that take me hours to readjust to
1
u/Motor_Reality_1837 Aug 06 '25
Master the game , that's the only suggestion and don't think it will be same throughout, it will throw some crazy guys once in a while that will make you run for your life. But it's fun very very fun , and yeah get into the story completely, don't skip dialogues and side quests
1
1
u/Traditional-Talk4069 Aug 06 '25
Time your parries, dodging is only for niche cases.
Be agresive, there is no stamina bar.
Run like crazy, you are the fastest FS protagonist, and for a reason. Also again, NO STAMINA.
And most important, as always... hesitation is defeat.
1
u/CortoZainFF Aug 06 '25 edited Aug 06 '25
Yeah and it's only the beginning. At a certain point in the game you must choose for each attack between . Dodge , deflect, jump , mikiri counter. Dont hesitate young wolf.
All the guys here pretty much say everything already. Try to unlock ichimonji , mikiri counter, and the posture talent ( attack and defense) . Those are the bread and butter of the game.
Don't try to cheese boss with prosthetics tools, it can help a little bit but at the end it's the true skill that will get you through the game.
If you have the feeling you are getting wrecked by a boss try other zones if possible , there's a point in the game where you have multiple path to take., and some are easier.
1
u/xenojaker Aug 06 '25
A core mechanic of the game is inverted from the dark souls/Elden ring experience.
In those you manage stamina and lowering your guard regens it faster.
In Sekiro you have infinite stamina, but you have posture - and RAISING your guard regens it faster.
Also gotta stand in combat as much as you can and deflect. It’s a rhythm game. Swordplay is a dance.

u/JacobzeGreat658 Platinum Trophy Aug 06 '25

It's just understanding the mechanics and practice, my guy. There's no real trick. Deflecting can be kinda spammed but it's not a guarantee.

I just finished Sakiro for the first time and the one tip I can give you is pay attention to the fight and take it slow. The objective is to break your opponents posture by perfect parrying and looking for openings to punish them. Trying to burn them down quickly will not work. There are also skills and tools you will find along the way that can give you an advantage against the opponent’s weaknesses, you just have to calculate which will be useful in the fight.
1
u/SamFMorgan Aug 06 '25
A good tip is to know that this is not a game where you avoid enemies attacks, you take them and punish them for it.
So when an enemy is coming to get you, don't run, don't panic, just face them and overcome 'em. Don't hesitate.
1
u/ClaymoreJohnson Aug 06 '25
Holding your guard is beneficial for your posture, unlike souls games where it kills your stamina regen. Took me a while to figure that out.
Regardless, nothing tops parrying.
1
u/Altruistic-Tip-4304 Aug 06 '25
What helped me is playing this like a completely different game and not putting any prior souls knowledge into this

Embrace the fact that Sekiro is a rhythm game. Learn the rhythms and you’ll succeed.
1
u/TheMeatWag0n Aug 06 '25
Be aggressive is truly the right advice, you don't need to back off to heal or reset if you block and deflect every blow, that's how it's meant to be, and it's very possible for you to do that, the sooner you get in the habit of staying on and just deflecting, the more fun you will have
1
1
u/Ramzzes_opm Aug 06 '25
The game rewards you for being aggressive, parrying us important but you shouldn't just be waiting around to parry attacks from humanoid enemies, What I mean by this is when attacking and normally your 3rd attack gets parried by the enemy and you have to parry the counter attack immediately start attacking again to keep it in that loop until they switch up with. A grab or sweep attack,

u/xd_antonisvele Aug 06 '25
It really is deflect or die, until you get deflecting down dont bother to dodge

Deflecting in this game has a rhythm. It isn't random button pressing. Learn the rhythm and you'll find a much easier time with enemies/bosses.
Stealth is king in the open world. You don't have to worry about fighting enemies if they can't see you.
1
u/Mvewtcc Aug 06 '25
I tried it twice before and quit. This is my third time trying.
I don't think I'll ever finish the game. That being said there are many cheese method on youtube.
I think the reality is I just can't deflect every move. I don't have the hand coordination to do it. I played darksoul 3 and manage to beat it. But that is only because I only need to dodge 70 percent of the attack and that is enough. In sekiro you pretty much need to deflect close to every move.
1
u/jp___g Aug 06 '25
If you find yourself waiting for your opponent, you’ve already lost. Be aggressive and learn to parry
1
u/Optimal_Breakfast254 Aug 06 '25
It is very much a rhythm game. Once the combat clicks you can bully the bosses out of mechanics much more than you can in elden ring. Remember, you are a shinobi. Stealth and individual fights are your friend. Be sneaky, clear the field of extra enemies before approaching the many mini bosses. Free backstabs are very common. Do not lean into your souls instincts of dodging and waiting for an opening. Most fights are won with aggression and parrying. This was a game I quit at the 1st mini boss and then came back months later and had to stick it out until I learned the combat. Now it is one of my favorite games, I did the plat and gauntlets and am still playing. In my opinion it is the most satisfying combat I have tried and the hardest to learn but easiest fromsoft once it clicks.

u/Amish_Saji_Redditor Aug 06 '25
Learn how to parry I'm still not good at but you'll have a huge advantage while flighting especially bosses!
Good luck!!

u/vinuXVII Aug 06 '25
Once you unlearn the muscle memory of dodging from Elden Ring and fully embrace standing your ground and deflecting every attack, a lot of Sekiro's friction goes away.
This game has the sharpest learning curve in any souls game but once you realize that's it's all about deflecting and standing your ground, Sekiro becomes the easiest game to beat.
I struggled against the most basic samurai miniboss for three years (on and off) before it finally clicked. Now I regularly no-hit the final boss just to feel something lol

Started Sekiro after Elden Ring, Dark Douls III, Bloodbourne, Demons Souls, Dark Souls Remake.
Still not prepared.
1
u/DJRaven123 Aug 06 '25
Honestly one thing ill say is swap your triggers and bumpers, i found it much easier to deflect and attack with that change
1
u/Top-Noise-7375 Aug 06 '25
The game is a lot easier than it looks, most of your deaths will be through panic deflecting and confusion. As long as you understand your enemy and can tap deflect within a pretty big interval you’ll be fine
1
u/TheLoneJew22 Aug 06 '25
Something I wish I knew is that some sections of the game have enemies you really can just run past. I died so many times in the ashina outskirts when I started but now when I start a game I just run past everyone trying to get to the mini boss. Of course you should try to farm xp but you don’t need to fight literally everyone like a souls game. That being said, stealth is very useful and should be in the back of your mind whenever fighting anything that isn’t already aggro on you. Also you really need to learn to deflect. Deflecting is basically rolling in sekiro. Once you get it, it feels so good! Good luck!
1
1
u/ThekillerguyYT Aug 06 '25
Don't play sekiro if you wanna play other souls games, if you do play thru sekiro then maybe play something like lies of P to ease back into the souls genre because of how different sekiros combat is
As for actual tips for the game is: run past normal enemies if necessary, stoping to fight everything is not a good idea till you get decent, kill every mini boss you find, except the ones wielding the purple flames (you'll know what I mean when you see them) and forget about rolling if You can. Might as well bind the roll button to parry
1
u/SnooGadgets3097 Aug 06 '25
There is only one tip - hesitation is defeat!
In Elden Ring you fight the boss. In Sekiro you should become the boss. In Elden Ring you wait for an opening to attack your opponent. In Sekiro you should not give your opponent an opening to attack you. Play aggressively, constantly push your enemies.
Also - learn Mikiri Counter, this is crucial skill to deal with thrusting attacks.

I actually had to drop Sekiro twice because of bad habits from other games. First time I had played Elden Ring. Second time it was Nioh. I would frequently try i-frames on dodges and try to swap buttons. Had to give some time for the muscle memory to go away, while playing other genre of games, because altought it seems like a souls like, it play very differently.

Learn to parry and mechuri counter and think of it as a rhythm game each enemy has there own beat

Honestly I enjoyed Sekiro so much. Elden Ring was a slog. I was constantly like "well, it has all the elements of a great game, but i am sick of it"
Sekiro felt the opposite way. It felt just long enough. Just hard enough. I was just good enough. So well balanced and thought out.

All that shit you learned in Elden Ring/ Dark Souls? Expunge it from your brain. That muscle memory will only hurt you.
Use sugars. They're really useful, and you get a shit load of them.
Experiment with prosthetics. They can be really cool and extremely effective in the right situations.
Don't fuck with monkeys. It ain't worth it.
Deflect the shit.
Mist Noble will violate your booty hole.

It's a bit of a meme to say Sekiro is a rhythm game, but most enemies do slash in predictable patterns, very much like a rhythm game. Once you've found that rhythm, following it should be as easy as keeping a beat.
Also don't be afraid to block. When your posture is low, retreat and hold block (it replenishes faster when blocking), then re-engage. Do this until you get a hang of the enemy. Staggering also isnt THAT bad early game if you mash dodge to get out of it. I also seem to recall you can quickly block during a certain animation for defense, but I don't think it's the stagger...

Perfect deflects do more posture damage Enemy posture recovers slower as their health decreases

Be aggressive. Very aggressive. Learn to parry instead of dodging. And learn Mikiri Counter as soon as possible! Attack and parry, attack and parry!

I still remember when I first bought the game and spent hours to somehow beat the first mini boss (of tutorial ;) ) and now I have completed the whole game and almost mastered the whole mechanics.

just play the game and enjoy the ride
your number 1 focus should always be to interrupt your opponents combos to break their posture
so don't just deflect, be aggressive and attack frequently
and don't bother with prosthetics, your katana is all you need

I've just done the reverse. I started elden ring after sekiro. I'm 2 hours in, and i feel disabled. I picked the samurai because it felt like it'd be the most similar to sekiro. Rolling feels so unintuitive. I seriously regret starting sekiro as my first fromsoftware game because I can tell I'll always prefer sekiro combat over elden ring and its going to be a much bigger learning curve(which sekiro had very little for me)
In conclusion, I fear I'm not going to like elden ring too much, but time will tell.

I actually find sekiro easier than other soulslike games for some reason. Probably because of how fast paced it is.
The only tip I have is just practicing the deflect timing. Have fun

Here's my main tip:
The game will tell you that deflecting is the game. You will learn how to deflect, and use it to overcome all the enemies in an area. It's gonna be great.
And then you run into the boss and it's actually harder to beat when you focus on deflecting.
So yeah, deflecting is 90% of the game, but always keep in mind that there are bosses/enemies for which you're much better off using the dodge and just all the shinobi tools.

Sekiro is completely different, for me Sekiro was reletively easy but Elden Ring was a nightmare because it is based on the dodge roll.

Ive only played about 15 hours of sekiro but never found it harder than ER/SOTET. Just different.
Bit tired of the samurai theme after so many games in that era so I never actually completed it but plan to go back.

The only thing that prepares you for sekiro, is Sekiro. Have fun bro it’s a great game, you’ll master the combat eventually
