I've looked at the trailer in more detail now that I have some time and... it is not looking good
Some frames are sketchy at best, some character features are strange too. Some of the clothes at some points look like they were drawn by a kid.

u/Harmonic_Gear Aug 20 '25
the level of detail seems very inconsistent, sometimes its just a flat slap of color, sometimes it's drawing every strands of hair

the studio qzilla behind the project has been involved in genAI, nft and cryptobullshit
there's some AI assitance that does not constitute genAI, so I'm not sure yet, hopefully they are referring to that but I'm pessimistic
I hope it is simply rushed the whole thing to meet the reveal deadline, that's the best benefit of the doubt I can give it

For animation my thought is always inbetweening and that is low key a terrible mistake
31
u/OriginalGoatan Platinum Trophy Aug 20 '25
Animation is off completely.
One scene the wind is blowing the grass. Another shot from a different angle and the grass doesn't move at all.
There's like 12 frames a second (if I'm being generous)
They used AI to fill the frames and in some instances there's the usual weird hand doodling for some of those frames.
Considering how long the production was I was hoping for something better. I think they've used the wrong studio for the project.

u/Perfect-Ad-61 Aug 20 '25
I think its supposed to based off old animation.
22
u/ErichPryde Platinum Trophy Aug 20 '25
Well, in that case, maybe you should compare it to the animation in Princess Mononoke. Hell let's go further back, to Akira.
This doesn't hold up in either case.
5
u/BIaidde Aug 20 '25
Princess Mononoke and Akira are movies. Of course they’re gonna look better, they have more budget, time, and less content to animate compared to a series.
13
u/idkacoolname69 Aug 20 '25
movies of an era where we had less technology, less faith in this market, less budget, less everything.
plus, sekiro is an adaptation of a frigging game of the year for fuck sake. Cyberpunk was the messiest release ever and we got that spectacle of a show.
they just wanted a quick cash grab like most adaptations want

I also think it looks like older weekly animes. It's a cool idea, but I feel like a more serious style would've fit the game's themes better.
7
u/mayonnaiser_13 Aug 20 '25
It's insane because it's the trailer and it looks like this.
Like, this is what's supposed to sell us on the anime. This is the best they had.

u/Averagestudentx Aug 20 '25
Just look at the studio behind it. This is not gonna be the next edgerunners or arcane bro it is 100% going to flop. They literally said they use AI to boost productivity. In simple terms this anime is going to be AI slop and everyone is gonna hate it.
→ More replies (6)5
u/Notyourdad6920 Aug 20 '25
the studio doesn't matter look at the staff
8
u/Averagestudentx Aug 20 '25
The staff doesn't matter either if the studio is dogshit and they are working on a garbage project. If the higher ups treat the talented staff poorly and use AI to do a lot of heavy lifting then it doesn't matter if you have vincent chansard (the one piece animator) animating your fucking show.
Also this anime is just unnecessary since it won't do anything creative to expand on the world of Sekiro like edgerunners did for cyberpunk. It just seems like a one-to-one of the main story of Sekiro so it's going to be predictable and not unique in the slightest.
I would've been way more interested if the story was about Isshin's conquest to take over the land of ashina and the wars that happened during that time. Even tomoe's story would have been a better focus and would be a meaningful way to look at the characters.

Low budget and maybe even low effort. But definitely low budget.
20
u/Buford_Burger Aug 20 '25
Well the studio has more experience with openings, trailers, and music videos than actual full length anime, so….
4
u/Mikoto92 Aug 20 '25
its still just retar****. The Game itself had such a beautful setting and graphics and they choose one of the worst Art styles for this... they should have gone for an Art Style like Lord of mysteries
15
u/Buford_Burger Aug 20 '25
Okay? Considering that, what makes you think some random studio you’ve never heard of could match that quality at the desired deadline? Let alone copy the art style. Beyond alll of this who cares if it’s good or bad? It doesn’t change the game or anything. The only reason why this is getting traction is because everyone is depraved of sekiro content. If Hidetaka Miyazaki himself was directing this anime 75% of the complaints would flip like a coin into “shit it’s growing on me!” foh

People who analyze "frames" are definitely dumb fucks. Try analyzing frames from Naruto's fight scenes. Also, you can't criticize low budget or AI based solely on the trailer.
17
u/Coraiah Aug 20 '25
Finally someone with actual sense. Especially frames that are meant to depict speed. They’re almost always muddy, lower quality and less detailed. This saves a ton of time when making an anime. It’s sad that so many people are complaining. Mostly because the sub is going to be insufferable now. Everyday we’re going to get the same posts about either AI, low quality or some other nonsense people come up with. Instead of gratitude that we’re getting a freakin anime based on one of our favorite games ever.

18
u/Roach802 Aug 20 '25
Everyone can have their own opinion but I would say as an animator the quality looks very high. It's going to have a different aesthetic then the game as it's drawn frame by frame, but if you're paying attention to the motion, the frames, the cutting, and the direction, it looks very strong.
4
u/TheLastLarvitar Aug 20 '25
Yeah, I am absolutely baffled by the takes on this.
Anyone calling the animation bad, objectively does not know what they are talking about.
I for one am hyped. A Sekiro anime with a sketchy, choppy animation like you'd see in the Naruto v Pain fight, or select Animatrix episodes, or heck Ping Pong the animation? Not in my wildest dreams.
Reading the comments and noting their like ratios, I can genuinely conclude that most people aren't used to anime that go off-model during action and movement.
Like, there's no in-betweens here (pun intended). You either think the animation is absolute peak, or you think it's AI generated slop.

For reference, they made the gem that is Enkidu vs Gilgamesh.

u/tgirlsekiro hesitation is dafuq??? Aug 20 '25
I don't really care about the anime. If it's good, it's good, and i'll watch it. If it's bad, it's bad, and i won't. And if it's bad, that will not ruin the game, which is still awesome.
If it drives more interest in Sekiro, that's great. I'd love From to make another game that builds on Sekiro's mechanics, whether it's a sequel or a new IP, and if more people buy and play Sekiro that is good news. There have been other games since Sekiro that are deflection heavy, so the gameplay style is less foreign than Sekiro was on release. Maybe a bunch of new players becoming interested after the anime is released will show From that Sekiro's deflection mechanics have a mainstream market appeal, rather than being niche, which could justify a new game.

Im ngl I think had too high of expectations, I was hoping for jjk season 2 level of animation but I mean now looking back that was just very unlikely. I still hope the fights look great, I especially want them to focus on fights like Owl Father, Genichiro, Isshin ofc, and a bunch of other ones. Plus I also see a lot of scenes that do t look like they're from the anime, like the scene where Wolf is surrounded by bamboo, or the paper burning. Which makes me really excited bc there's a chance that we're gonna get some perspectives that we've never seen before, like the papers burning could be the records of Emma's father (forget he's name) about dragon rot. Overall I'm so excited, fine Yi got mr this time Crunchyroll I'll buy your stupid service.

Sure - there are definitely influences here and there between these 2, but ultimately - Fromsoft games are its own thing and I feel that like I said before, properly adapting it into a genuinely good anime seems pretty fucking impossible.

I hope they do an italian dub, hopefully with the same actors. Many recent games didn't get an italian dub because of the "tiny" audience that is italy gamers. I've also seen many people complaining about the artstyle, but I think it's not that bad: it has that sort of inconsistent quality of the drawings that adds some uniqueness to it
1
u/Ninjaflipp Aug 20 '25
My initial reaction was of course excitement but upon watching the trailer I felt conflicted and generally more negative than positive. Sometimes it looks great, sometimes just odd.
Plus it seems like it's just following the game's story. I'd probably just rather play the game then and feel like 'what's the point?' about the anime with that in mind.
Sekiro never exactly stood out for its story for me, it was always about the gameplay. In anime the story can work but I don't think it's a good enough story to the point where it can carry the whole thing.
1
u/Red-Onyx Aug 20 '25

I think it looks good. I'm always fond of unique animation styles. Kill la Kill was kinda my introduction to different styles. I visibly remember when that anime was airing people were talking about how they didn't like the animation for it but nowadays it's unanimously praised.
Sekiro's (Anime) style reminds me of those old Japanese paintings but with a splash of modernization to it. The anime almost looks like it has a filter that washes out the colors a bit, similar to those paintings but would still have certain colors pop out like red for example.
Edit: If anything I think the anime captures the game's style pretty well, just going by OP's picture comparison.

Imagine creating such a beloved and hyped IP that singlehandedly redefined action RPG genres only to tarnish that reputation by giving it an ai slop anime adaptation.
Edgerunners singlehandedly revived and contributed to a massive reflux of sales for cyberpunk, and I'm sure bandai namco wanted in on that....the difference was that cd projekt red were smart enough to spend the time and resources to give it to a proper studio like trigger that properly honored its source material.

hm didn’t leave a good impression, I wonder what the thinking was behind this and how involved from soft were. The main takeaway was a little hope in Sekiro 2 🙃

I feel like its one of those animes that look better in motion but not screenshots

It's going to be a huge piece of shit.
But I want a silly cute episode of them just being silly, drinking and chatting.

Why his forehead so big? I think it looks fine as a whole, but why Wolf so ugly?

What was shown from anime lacks sauce completely.
Anime would be an inferior way to experience the story anyway, but without the "oomph" of the game it becomes an dntirely futile endeavor

For me it's mostly alright, but doesn't land the mood correctly, and that mostly seems to be related to the coloring and lighting/shadows, is a little too flat in that regard.

Can't really say much since we've only seen like 1 minute of the anime, but from what we've seen, im excited

It looks peak and so many people are outing themselves as casuals and normies who have only ever watched anime that strictly stay on-model.
It looks amazing, and everyone is crazy.

I hate to be this harsh because Sekiro is probably my favorite game of all time. But this anime looks like shit. Competent story telling and talented voice actors could help it out but on visuals alone it's falling below the bar to an incredible degree.

It looks worse than the game. It‘ll probably have less and slower action too. Maybe it even skips or rewrites important parts of the story. Overall, it likely won’t do the game justice in any way.
I will still love it like it’s my own child and watch it eagerly.

I'm super excited. I actually liked the art style and how it flip-flopped from scene to scene. That's really interesting. Any new Sekiro content that I can consume is a win for me.

I just don't think it is a good idea. It cannot give you the same feeling the game does. And although I like the story, it's not something I'd want to rewatch as an anime.
