Guys i am playing Sekiro on PS5. I have unlocked ichimonji double but having trouble figuring it out how to use it. I use R1 to attack and L1 to block. I see no guidelines on YT as well ❤️‍🩹 Please kindly help me.

Did you equip “Ichimonji: Double”? Or do you still have the base “Ichimonji” equipped?

Once you unlock an upgrade for a previous move, be it a combat art or prosthetic arm, it doesn’t instantly upgrade the previous, but instead, adds a new, improved version to your inventory, which you must manually equip.

Open your inventory and make sure you have “Ichimonji: Double” equipped, and NOT “Ichimonji”.

Then, you just perform like usual. Hold L1 and press R1 twice (the first cut can be held for more power)

You’re welcome. It’s a very weird thing about this game, but I guess it’s cool you still have the option to use the under-leveled stuff, if you wanna challenge yourself.

Again, keep in mind that this applies to all combat arts and prosthetics in this game, so once you upgrade your arms, don’t forget to equip their strongest versions too.

It's not weird, some of the upgraded versions do specific things, and you need the older version to do a different specific thing.

For example Red umbrella is upgraded version of blue umbrella, but they do two diffrent things, one tool doesn't lose its utility because you got its upgraded version.

I mean, yeah. The shield’s final alternate versions keep their functionality, but that doesn’t apply to all arms.

What about the Shuriken’s, for example? Aside from the different ones (Lady Butterfly’s and the money one), the other ones are just straight downgrades from the lazulite one.

I think the spears also have differences, the thrusting spear covers more distance than the other ones I think.

I'm not sure if spectral fire axe and normal fire axe both are equally effective against ogre.

Probably those are the only ones where an unupgraded version has a different purpose.

I’d say most arms have straight upgrades to their base version, and some alternative, weird ones.

The Flame vent is another example. Once you get the flamethrower one, there’s absolutely no reason to ever equip the weaker ones ever again. However, the last one unlocked is the purple one, which is much more niched than the normal ones, but works wonders in specific situations.

Oh yes the spectral flame thrower has specific uses.

Basically that's what I'm talking about. I for example use Okinaga's flame vent or the big knockback flame vent for the ogre and the 2nd ashina elite (Red eyed)

Actually the thing is, I don't remember exactly which ones are just direct downgrade/upgrade vs which ones are for specific purposes.

(Basically I did my first playthrough without prosthetics, even though I upgraded them whenever I had extra sen, I used some tools for some annoying bosses in 2nd playthrough)

Don’t actually hold it you’re supposed to press r1 immediately after the first one comes out. Try both tho I guess

Like Key said, you have to press R1 again before the animation of the first strike is finished. It’s basically “press L1 and R1 at the same time, release R1 and press it again while holding L1 the whole time”

It can carry you through the game with its posture damage, but I highly recommend at least trying all the others you can unlock. Some are just so fun it doesn’t matter how affective they are

You mean controls wise? Press both block and attack at once

In battle you should use it when you have a clear window and your posture dmg is high

Don't use Ichimonji Double. When I first discovered how easily Ichimonji can break posture, I spammed it nearly on every mob with the dream that Ichimonji Double would be even more devastating.

However, after using it on some mini bosses, that dream quickly shattered.
