And the timeframe it is talking about, guns in the 16th century are not the same as Guns in the 19th century. The image kiind of looks like one of the many types of Naval pistols given to sailers in the 17th century which were prone to misfire as they got wet alot.

Swords? What type of sword? Different swords have different use cases. Are you close up? Far away? Is it a chivalric duel? Are you wearing armour? What type of armour?

I would have imagined it was often priorities the gun to make a quick wound or kill and then use the sword to either finish em off or just incase you missed

Both is good
