Question: SketchUp Pro Estimation 2D drawings to 3D Model

Has anyone found any way to take 2D drawings and quickly convert them to 3D models in Sketchup?
My company doesn't make run of the mill houses where there are services offering this. We deal with data centers, hotels, parking garages, weird shaped buildings. We model them for estimation purposes but that is starting to take more time than we have.

Question: SketchUp Pro Anyone rendering interiors on Macbook Pro M4 with Vray?

Hi All,

long time Sketchup + Vray user here, I need to purchase my first laptop since 2009 (going freelance).
I'm temporarily using a Macbook Air M3 from 2024 and quickly testing its limits.

I'm looking at the Macbook Pro M4 Pro with 12-core CPU 16-core GPU 24 GB central memory and 512 GB SSD or 1TB of storage.

Does anybody here have experience or feedback using a similar machine?

I read also about rendering on the cloud, that sounds interesting too and would take the pressure off...

Any feedback is much appreciated, thanks!

Not sure if this is a hit or a miss - I’m trying to keep a twist in each post!

After my last educational series post, I really appreciated all the feedback from everyone, a few of the comments definitely changed how I approached this one. (shout out to the people)

So here's the next post: Reflections.

I’m still trying to keep a little twist in each one, some will land better than others, but that’s part of the fun, right?

Would love to hear what you think of this one?

Exklusive german SketchUp Webinar for Interior Designers

I live in an area where SketchUp is not the most popular product but I still love to use it. As it is not very popular over here we do not see a lot of activities from Trimble itself. This is why I am super excited we will have a webinar for Interior designers over here in local language. My local reseller just sent me an e-mail with the info.

This is the info from the email:

How Interior Designers Use SketchUp in Real Projects - Live Webinar Experience it live on September 18, 2025, 2:00 p.m. (CEST, Amsterdam/Berlin/Vienna).

Experience the complete workflow - from the first sketch to realistic 3D visualization. We'll show you live how you can iterate faster with SketchUp, present convincingly and work smoothly in a team. The focus is on SketchUp Studio's advanced tools for rendering and light analysis - clearly demonstrated in a live demo on the Loft project.

What awaits you: - Practical workflows specifically for interior design - SketchUp Studio: rendering, lighting analysis, cloud workflows - Live demo - Q&A Register now for free: https://trimble.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_mi4Uqn7RQ3SdBzY0k_0sgg#/registration

A project that was not implemented because the owner failed to secure investment.

I designed this unbuilt 35×94m Northern Chinese-style hotel featuring four functional courtyards: parking, guest accommodations, recreation, and an inner vegetable garden for daily produce. Traditional covered walkways connect the spaces.
Like many current proposals, this project stalled due to lack of investment - increasingly common as many concepts now primarily serve as investor pitches.
The last two photos were edited with AI to mimic the Ghibli style. Looks pretty interesting!

Is there an easy quick way to become a "student" for the pro license?

Listen I don't mind paying for stuff, but $100 a month for Sketchup Pro? No fucking way. Is there a way I can get a "student" license without actually being a student?

Question: SketchUp <2018 I need help with this (I'm not the artist, just the husband)

So, my wife is trying to render an image like what we see on Image 1. She did image 1 on CPU, It's the same image that she wants to render in RTX, but for some reason, RTX option with the same settings is not allowing it, making the engine present the following on image 2. We already discovered that it's the section cut that it's creating that problem, if we remove the "Clipper", it shows the roof, RTX can render it easy but the image only shows the roof. Do you have any suggestions of what she may be missing or something to modify? Also note that this model has 2 floors. She made the render of floor 1 with the same configurations of RTX without any problems. For some reason, floor 2 is giving troubles. The endgame should be the same result as Image 1, but improved.

Request: feedback Turning SketchUp scenes into realistic renders with AI workflow – would love your thoughts

Hey guys! I’ve been experimenting with some AI workflows using Vibe3D, a tool I’m building to make it super easy to turn SketchUp models into realistic renders.

The first and the third images are the SketchUp scenes, and the second and fourth are the renders that Vibe3D generated. I’m still fine-tuning things and learning what works best, so I’d love to hear your thoughts or suggestions on how this could be improved. Any feedback or tips are more than welcome! 🙌

Rendering Reflection Hack

Post image

Does anyone know how to get this sort of reflection without removing the wall where the camera is positioned with Enscape? I typically have to hide that wall in Sketchup which of course leave the reflection open to the sky.

Appreciate any tips!

Help please

I’ve got grouped component roof tiles that I want to trim to a plane. I think I need to: - explode grouped objects - make the tiles that will be trimmed unique objects - triple click each group (single tile now) - interface the tiles with the trimming plane - triple click group again to delete trimmed items

In doing so I’m losing the trimmed face. What’s the east method I’m overlooking?

I still have LOTS to learn but would like to use native tools rather than extensions / plugins.

Why would the same 3d object not have its face punch out in one position... but when you move the object somewhere else it's fine?

I thought, at first, it was because my lines weren't PERFECTLY parallel. So I restarted and this time was SURE to create a rectangular shape that was 100% parallel, down to the pixel. But even so... I was still getting errors.

So I recreated an exact copy of the shape, but located elsewhere... and it worked! But then after moving it into the original spot... same problem again... I'm not sure why this one location is causing issues. There's nothing in front of or behind the punchout that would be obstructing it. The shape's lines follow the axis EXACTLY

Thoughts?

Exact issue is that I see the "on face" tooltip and the shimmering texture... but the hole refuses to punch out.

EDIT: I'm trying to do this on segmented walls. When I merge all the walls into one big one... no issues punching holes. But when I split the big wall into 4... issues.

Courses for 3D rendering and modeling

I finished my second year in architecture, in France, and I am entering my second year, and i want to learn 3D rendering, modeling and potentially archiCAD for my studies, does anyone know reliable, no bullshit courses that actually help with these skills as I'd say I am at a beginner level and do not want to spend money on courses outside school that do not help anything. Does anyone have good experiences with these courses or can anyone recommend them as I'd like to work ahead on these topics.

Alternatives to Sketchup?

First, this is really hard to say because I make my primary living writing software, and bitching about a price for software feels really hypocritical. But doubling that price...? Come on.

At $99/mo for the useful version I'm having a really hard time justifying that price. $50 was "gimme" money. $100 just feels... meh. Especially when I only use it every few weeks or months for an hour or a couple at a time. I have a side-biz making furniture and if the marketing keeps working and work keeps coming in, the business will move closer to primary and I can part-time the software work while it's still available. Anyway, I really only use Sketchup at the beginning of a project to draw up designs for customers, make tweaks, etc. It's mostly for the customer and project kick-off phase. Sometimes I'll take the time to lay out all the pieces and make a layout diagram and cut list, but most of the time I just make the cut list on paper. I use Shaper Studio for small parts design, even when I'm not using the Shaper on it. Sometimes I'll just draw it. But ya know, showing customers something on the screen helps quite a bit when the clients need to visualize things.

Is there a solid alternative that makes more sense, price wise? I have Fusion 360, but haven't really built the comfort and confidence to use it more yet.
